In a special broadcast, we look at voices of a people’s history inspired by the late great historian Howard Zinn’s groundbreaking book, A People’s History of the United States, which helped reshape how history is taught in classrooms. Twenty years ago, Zinn and Anthony Arnove began organizing public readings of historical texts referenced in A People’s History of the United States. The two would go on to publish a book collecting theses texts under the title Voices of a People’s History of the United States. While Zinn died in 2010, his work continues to inspire millions across the country and the globe. Arnove and Hailey Pessin have just published a new book titled Voices of a People’s History of the United States in the 21st Century: Documents of Hope and Resistance. It gathers more than 100 speeches, essays and other documents of activism, protest and social change. We speak with them about the book, and feature readings from texts featured in it.

Very powerful messages and voices against hate, fascism, and racism. We need much more people and programs like this in the world to point out to those of us who choose to ignore and displace the problems and history of an experimental country with outdated rules that only benefit the rich and powerful. Never give up, fight for a better America. Be inspired to make change for the better for all. Thank you Democracy Now for showing us all the right path we should be taking.❤
Quick question does he talk about the people who actually thrived and set up the system for their advantage like John Dee, Rockefeller, Andrew, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Dupont, and the secrets societies that actually run the United States?
People migrate for the same reasons that we always have
They used to migrate to find work, and better themselves. Now they migrate to leach off the system, and contribute nothing
Thanks Democracy Now. My spirits needed lifting today during this sad time for our nation
Thank you for sharing these great writers and the reading of their words. I was deeply touched, motivated and tearful upon reading, "The Invention of Wings", and purchase more than one copy of it. I gave a copy to a relative of mine who is a teacher and she refused to read it as she didn't like the "dialect" that was used in many parts of it. In my heart of hearts I felt that it wasn't the dialect that put her off, but the message of the book.
We as a people are presented daily with a happy, happy, joy, joy, fake reality of life and any one, any voice that looks deeper, speakes truth, cares about real issues, is and has been labeled "a downer". The pretending, the false faces, the look at my material life, the fancy food, the fancy drink, the fancy car and houses, is coming to an end. It's all vanity.
If what is happening right now in Gaza, in the Occupied West Bank and the corruption we are seeing in our government, the blind eye they've turned to our protests, marches and the deaf ear to our voices. If the militarization of our Police forces doesn't wake you up to cry fowl. You're unfortunately in a self induced coma or you are wallowing in the luxury that most of us don't have, don't want and don't need, to keep the blinders on and only seeing the false reality of what you want to see. Ignorance is not bliss, ignorance is dangerous and it doesn't have to come knocking on your own door for it to harm you in some form, some day.
I love Howard Zinn. 💙💙💙 don’t remember how many copies I’ve bought of his seminal book over the years to share. This day’s moving show made me remember to update my debit information to include Democracy NOW! in my (modest) monthly donation; today is the best day to do my little part. Thank you all who bring us truth into our lives. 💙💙💙
"No human being is illegal". Well spoken.
Howard Zinn also taught at Spelman College 🫶🏾

🦸Prof Howard Zinn one of the GREATEST American Heroes of All Time 📚🎓✊
Journalists and academics aren't heroes. Heroes risk something. Heroes do something in opposition to bad actors. Activists and leaders can be heroes. You have to do something to be a hero. The reason I tell people this is just to try to get people to understand why the Left is losing, why every program of capital that threatens humanity is gaining momentum. It's because the Left fetishizes criticism and intellectualism over action. Zinn is great and his book had a profound impact on me but I admire him for his activism a lot more.
@@Will_MoffettI wrote a long response to this and then deleted because I realized you can’t teach a fucking baboon to use a calculator… do you even watch this show?
Whatever dude what have you done?😮
@@kellymccormick8757 What I've done or not done is irrelevant to the truth of what I'm saying. It's a very common practice to call one of the rare journalists outside of the propaganda framework a "hero". Few really qualify. Assange is a hero. You can also call Amy Goodman a hero because they have risked something. But authoring an academic work, while marginally helpful, doesn't even register as a blip to the people who have amassed armies to ensure that oil is dug up from the Earth at the fastest rates possible. The FBI tried to kill MLK because he could organize a boycott, not because he could write a compelling book. Nothing is going to change based on mere words. I'm not telling you what to do, but I'm arguing that unless it's an action against the forces of greed, it's barely anything. Getting 5 friends to boycott companies that profit from Palestinian oppression is more of a contribution to the fight than Zinn's masterpiece or 10 like it. Stop throwing around the word hero based on mere intellectual work.
@Will_Moffett So activists aren't heros?
No more USA imperialism!!!!!! No more !!!!
Time for U.S. leaders to end Unipolar imperialism; build concordance with foreign leaders and organize an economic, scientific and cultural paradigm shift!

Howard Zinn an inspiration, truly!
it changed me reading his book while deployed invading iraq.
Thank you for coming back alive. I'm sad about war. I promote peace ❤☮️
My son grew up with Howard Zinn's book
I did not. So, unlike me my son never knew America to be great. I did, in the one place it ever was, in the fictional history books of my childhood.
Thank you for all your efforts brave lady.
This book 📕 opened my eyes 👀 year’s ago. A state prisoner told me about the book on the phone 📞 I was better informed about the real American 🇺🇸 History because of this book. Thank you 🙏🏽 Joey tevenal.
I have that book.
I have read that book.
I am going to have to re-read it.
Thank you Amy & the entire Democracy Now team for this superb presentation and the introduction to Mr. Zinn, Anthony, and Hailey. I look forward to delving into their works.
Each actor, reading such poignant work, was phenomenal. Marissa Tormei made me shed tears as she brought hope, sadness, meaning and emotion to each word, each pause, each breath of Mrs. Bro's testimony. In the background, Kerry Washington's face said it all as she absorbed the reading/ performance.
I have this book
Thanks again, Amy&crew.
Love you Amy from Switzerland..thank you to be Amy
Definitely buying both books.
I read the book; a very good read
My country seems to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back every time. How can we ever vote hard enough to remove corrupt politicians, activist judges and our corporate overlords? We can’t.
This feels like an appropriate time to do a re read.
Part of Zinn's legacy is the inspiration for An Indigenous Peoples History 📖 by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
Yes, the Native Americans should be known more for their sense of community family medicinal practices, spiritual practices, instead of their warmongering and take over other tribes and even to some extent holding vast amounts of slaves
Thank you, Amy Goodman and team Democracy Now for this continuing legacy of Howard Zinn with Haley and Anthony Arnove. I have bought Howard Zinn's book and dontated to my local library and bought it for others, along with Dr. Gerald Horne's books, Afro-American history, are also important.

I was privileged to take a class under Howard Zinn at Boston University and Dr Benjamin Quarles while I was a undergrad at Morgan State University (HBCU). We must keep teaching and teaching and teaching.
We are never teaching unless we talk about the people who took over this country for their interest like the Rockefellers Rothchild central bankers like JP Morgan Vanderbilt, Henry Ford Dupont. Unless we talk about these people and put the blame on them that everything else is bullshit. When we talk about evil white man, we should be specific and talk about the people that I just mentioned instead of Joe and Jim, Bob from Indiana who are Christian
Excellent understanding of our world...xxx
John Brown (May 9, 1800 - December 2, 1859)was a man of action -- a man who would not be deterred from his mission of abolishing slavery.🌋
Thank you Amy Goodman and Democracy Now! for sharing how Anthony Arnove and Hailey Pessin are continuing the work of Howard Zinn.
There's a really well done reading of A People's History of the United States here on YT.
It's laid out 1 chapter per video in a playlist.

Thank you so much for doing this piece! These voices need to be heard.
Thank you, Matt Damon, for putting me in the know about Dr. Zinn's book. I've read it twice and regard it as one of the best books on U.S. history that I've yet read.
Thanks once again Democracy Now for another quality broadcast.
Reminder...if trump is elected, all social issues will be set in reverse...with his foot on the pedal to the floor. ☹️
Remember Trump is the one that locked us down for a bullshit virus and implemented operation works speed. Democrats are the ones who forced everybody to take the poison pill or use their rights. PHILOSOPHY
WHERE THE HERO DIES
PaulTeich©10/31/23
Where the hero dies
A poem about a person who stands on a pulpit before the crowd
Condemning violence and confronting the lovelessness of the planet
This person is in the way of those who think they should be heroes
Who are would be heroes
And who have been manipulated by the powers that be to think they are doing the right thing
All conflicts end in negotiation
So the actual conflict of death and pain is actually only a business opportunity
That the powers that be don’t want to pass up
Where the hero dies
Is about the man who stands on the pulpit
Preaching peace and love and poetry
Save the world
And is killed by the onslaught of those who think they should be heroes
Of those who think they would be heroes
Of those would be heroes
Who have been brainwashed to think that
Killing a pacifist would be a good idea
Many think that Pontius Pilate was wrong
And perhaps Barbarus would’ve been a better choice
And another hero
Not a would be
Not a should be
As told by someone else to be
But perhaps is also there
Because they think God is on their side
The side of peace
The side of love
The side of poetry
The side of pacifism
That, perhaps God has never been on the same side of a conflict where are two opposite warring factions that are the same
God is on their side
George Carlin asked, could someone be mistaken?
Could someone be wasting their time?
Could it be everyone?
Where the hero dies
It’s not in the plane shot down by the man who dropped the bomb
Where the hero dies is not behind the gun
And a fax sending out projectiles for a mile
That’s bullets by the way
Where the hero dies is not on the battle field
We have been misled
Where the hero dies is the pulpit
Where the person who preaches peace has been trampled by the soldier who has been manipulated to think that God is on their side
The next preacher of peace takes the pulpit
And hunkers down to save the world
At the same time, the misguided soldiers, who are simply making money for the man
And increasing stock priced and dividends for the man
Are manning up to kill anyone weaker than them
Instead of hunkering down to save the world
Where the hero dies is where the person who has hunkered down to save the world
Is trampled and murdered by those who have been manipulated and brainwashed to think that they should hate the sin and kill the sinner
And that is a very man up thing to do
They could also hunker down to hate the sin
But love the sinner
And worship the dove of peace instead of the eagle of war
Where the hero dies is where the philosopher statesman who hunkers down to Preach peace is actually shot to keep the profits up by people who don’t actually know why they’re shooting
When politics becomes the shadow cast by big business over the bewildered herd
Profit, less peace, replaced by raining war on our heads to increase next quarter’s profits, dividends and stock price
Congratulations, Haley! This is Deborah from HV ISO. Could not be prouder of you!
Powerful. Keep fighting the good fight

PHILOSOPHY
IN-TOLLERANCE
PaulTeich©11/21/2023
Love, cooperation, toleration, kind and save the world
Hate, don’t cooperate, inability to tolerate me and the world
Ammosexual loves his guns, homosexual loves my buns, we are a heterogeneous world
Beneath reproach we are not, to realize this adds to the melting pot
Intolerant means you don’t even see me
Intolerant means maybe you make me bleed
Intolerant means you don’t care how I feel
Intolerant means you don’t understand our oneness IS REAL
In-tolerant means you are now inside
In-tolerant the place we are together and meld our minds
In-tolerant attitude and we are on each other’s side
In-tolerant we more than tolerate, there is no war
And no one has to hide
In-tolerant and inside is the world of abide
Togetherness, love and tears of joy are cried
Truth, justice and an American way that never lied
Asking for permission, making KIND our religion and inviting in the whole village
Intolerance is what led us astray
In-tolerance we have changed a disparaging word to a place together we can stay
Thank you to Haley Pessin for taking the time to include all people who can become pregnant when speaking about abortion rights! This kind of conversation helps me stay motivated and hopeful. We keep us safe and intersectionality keeps us strong.
Thank you Amy

Once again. Thank you for the inspiration! To reminds us that ❤ all LIVES MATTER!
History is so important and must be taught.

I’m reading this now!! It’s so deep
The purpose served by the enslavement of any person or people is, and always has been an attempt by the slaver to relieve theirselves of being an economic slave. We are all slaves to the necessities of life. To acquire them requires a certain amount of work. The burden of having to work is laid upon the shoulders of every man and woman; and in our society, the division of labor has been borne more by some than by others. That division is the source of all the tension and hostility between the people who are forced to do the labor and those who do the forcing, hence the term ‘economic slave’. If we’re ever going to be loosed from the chains of our economic slavery, we’ll have to have an economic bill of rights.
Many immigrants have proven that wrong. How many companies today making products you use on a daily basis, products that improve your life compared to our parents, employ people here and overseas are found by immigrants. Seventy percent of people are employed by small business, not corporations. Not everyone in America is an economoc slavr. The US is no different from other nations, but it is still unique because our country will talk about our checkered past and learn from it. If our nation is as bad Vinn portray it, then why is many immigrants from nonwhite countries want to come to the US. Why aren't blacks leaving as soon as they are able? Why isn't Vinn and his colleagues urging the US to wall off our borders to save migrants from evil America?? The US despite its blemishes is still a desirable nation to live in. If there is a better place, this should not be happening.
I wouldn't be watching this channel but for Zinn
Thanks to those amazing people that working for human, humanity and freedom and free world with out wars ❤
Hope-infusion,- thank you, for your journalism!
So much admiration for this work
My grand children have and are reading Howard Zinn.
this entire video so inspiring. Can't think of anything more patriotic for the Independence day observance.
I'm already listening for 15m and there's not a single mention of poverty and class strugle.
Years ago one of my colleagues in Dayton got to talk to Mr. Zinn about the disability rights movement. He didn't get it and didn't wanna write about it go figure
For a great look at the dark history of the US I highly recommend: The Untold History of the United States by Peter Kuznick & Oliver Stone

That wassooo good and gives me hope for the resistance & the future
Is it still worth reading even though it may have a lot of historical inaccuracies?
yes. I'd recommend fact checking once in a while because some sources have been proven to be false. I'd say it's still more reliable than the shit we got in textbooks
Mind boggling! 😮😮😢😢

The intent and not the deed
Is in our power; and, therefore, who dares greatly
Does greatly. John Brown (May 9, 1800 - December 2, 1859)
*I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only God knows about. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By God, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 6 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 15,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 45,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of God. I ask you, by God, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967717354582 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may God reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger. My family and I ask you, by God, if you are able to help us, do not be late and may God reward you well..`/--~«««~-♡~♡~♡~~•~•~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡♡♡~~~: ~:~¡~¡~¡~;I.i.i.i.i.i. i.I.|-..........،،،،،،.......*
