    Hi there - we appreciate that the “just filtered” part of our title has drawn a few comments and we want to address it. First off - you’re right; you could say lots of things are filtered blood products, including urine and even the carbon dioxide we breathe out. We decided to make this video because we believe most people, including ourselves, don’t think about how the same thing is true for a substance a lot of us drink every day - milk from an animal - and that communicating that fact would lead folks to a different appreciation of what milk is. Secondly - you’re also right; we didn’t fully convey the amazing things that the mammary gland does. Almost all of the precursors to the stuff in milk DO come from the bloodstream, but the special cells in the mammary gland transform many of them into their final milky forms, which we simplified in the video as “do some chemistry on them” and in the title as “filtered.”

      Beni Idel they don't "give" milk. it's taken from them, after they have been separated from their young, for ten months at a time. the cycle is repeated until they can no longer get pregnant/lactate, and then they are shot in the head. the cow industry is based on the cruelest sort of exploitation there is, absolutely nothing is naturally produced/given by them.

    • @BlankIdea02
      @BlankIdea02 Před 6 lety +7

      If we don't milk cows, it hurts them as well. and we don't shoot cows in the head, we inject a painlessly killing thing. also, we separate the cows from their young for only 12 months, until they can all rest in the same place, after the young cows have developed trust in humans and a strong immune system. We care for every single cow, and all 392 of them have names. And while we use serial numbers for the systems that check milk to see if the cows are nice and healthy, we still keep data about their names, and every time a cow is sick, it is manually milked to relieve the strain 67 litters of milk can put on everyone. And the cow industry is 100 percent natural, cow evolution was directed by men, and nature made cows give more milk through evolution. Cows were made by men, and therefore are a property of mankind.

The cow stays with baby the whole life, the calf drinks the milk first then the excess goes to us. The cow dies naturally. No it isn't. Not only are some of the constituents of the blood chemically altered, but major constituents of milk (casein, for example) are synthesized in the glands and secreted into the milk. They are not found at all in the blood.
    Milk is "just" filtered blood in the same sense that hair (or any other part of the body) is "just" filtered blood as well- all of the water, minerals, nutrients, and other constituents of it were ultimately derived from things transported through the blood.

    • @michaelsotomayor5001

      David Enrique so it’s still made from blood? That’s the bottom line suggestion? Because if it is please don’t skew the answer. Just be straight up.

    • @MinuteEarth
      @MinuteEarth  Před 6 lety +18

      Hi David - you're right that some proteins are only synthesized in the epithelial cells of the mammary gland. But they take the amino acids from the blood to make them; I believe it takes about 2-3 hours for the casein precursors to go from the blood to the milk.

    • @davidonfim2381
      @davidonfim2381 Před 6 lety +31

      Michael- Yes, it's still made from blood, but that's not what the video is claiming. The video is literally titled that milk is *just filtered blood*. Using the video's logic, your brain, eye, or any other part of the body is also just filtered blood too. My point is that the video's logic is absurd.
      MinuteEarth- Some? 80% of the proteins in cow's milk and between 20% and 45% of the proteins in human milk are caseins.
      And yes, they do take amino acids from the blood to make them. That's my point, EVERYTHING in an animal's body is made up of precursors from the blood. That does not mean that your hair, bones, sweat, muscles, etc. are "just filtered blood". Filtration is a purely physical/mechanical process, it does not involve chemical alteration or synthesis. If all milk consisted of was interstitial fluid/lymph, then yes- it literally would just consist of blood that has been filtered to remove the blood cells. But milk =/= lymph. It is chemically and physically very different from blood, and you do not get those differences from "just" filtering. You have to fundamentally change the composition of blood to make milk.

    • @eelert
      @eelert Před 6 lety +5

      David, I take your point about "just filtered" vs "filtered + altered", but I'm also curious about the degree of alteration / complexity involved in converting blood precursors to the constituents in milk, vs some of the other syntheses you mentioned. I know very little about physiology, but my understanding is that stuff like hair is pretty complicated - that it involves cell division, differentiation, programmed death, etc, to make a little new hair. Which, to me, seems appreciably different from an epithelial cell grabbing some constituents, putting them together to form proteins, and pushing those proteins to the inside of an alveolus. So from what I know, I'd say that it's a lot MORE true that milk is just filtered blood than that hair is just filtered blood. However, my mind is open, and I'd love to be convinced otherwise!

    • @davidonfim2381
      @davidonfim2381 Před 6 lety +6

      Emily- You're definitely right that the hair example is on the more extreme side of modification. Hairs not only consist almost exclusively of synthesized material that's not found in the blood, but they also have a particular structure (both microscopically and macroscopically) that is obviously not derived in any way from the blood. However, I think you're underestimating just how much modification goes on in the production of milk, and many of the super important functional characteristics of milk are not derived from blood by just filtering it. For example, milk isn't just a solution of molecules, it also has structure. The epithelial cells do just dump out SOME components into the alveolus, but they also have a form of secretion called apocrine secretion. That's when parts of the cell is pinched off and the whole thing becomes part of the secretion. The fat globules in milk are literally little pieces of cell (including a bit of cytoplasm and membrane proteins) that are full of fat. If it weren't for this fact (plus the negative charges of casein and whatnot...), milk would immediately separate into a fat layer and a liquid sugary layer.
      There are tons of other examples too... lactose isn't really found in blood, it is synthesized in epithelial cells. Casein is also not just dissolved in milk, it is arranged into micelles consisting of sub-micelles and the fact that they're negatively charged and carry calcium and phosphorous is extremely important for the properties of milk. I THINK (not sure about this) most, if not all of the antibodies in milk are also produced locally (by plasma cells associated with the glands, not by the epithellial cells) and aren't just pulled out from the blood, etc. Almost everything you think of when you think of milk (its color, microstructure, taste, etc) is something that is a result of chemical changes rather than from simply taking some stuff out of blood.
      So in short, yes- there's definitely a quantitative difference in the degree to which blood must be modified to turn it into hair vs. to turn it into milk, but that's purely a quantitative difference and it's probably not as large as you would think. Milk is a very complex secretion that is qualitatively (both chemically and physically) VERY different from blood, so saying that milk is just filtered blood is just plain wrong.

      It's just easier to empathise with puppies that make sad faces than sunflowers, but both are equally as alive as each other. The only suffering-free diet we'll ever have is from lab-grown meat tissues (unless we start to advocate for the respect of cells' lives), but since the vast majority of vegans are hypocritical trend-chasers that are too intellectually lazy to get past their gut reaction, that's not happening any time soon.

    The premise of this video seems really clickbaity. Yes everything in milk comes from your blood, but that's true of *all* other nutrients in your body. Blood is a just a transport mechanism for the various nutrients that are filtered or chemically processed by your digestive tract from the food and liquids you ingest. The small intestine breaks down and absorbs about 90% of the nutrients straight into the blood and then various organs in your body either use those nutrients directly, or use the raw materials to manufacture other nutrients which are also transported through your blood, or excreted.
    45% of the volume of your blood is red blood cells which are there just to carry oxygen (0% of these go into Milk).
    Nearly 55% is Plasma, of which 92% is water, 7% proteins vital for clotting and less than 1% is fat, sugars, vitamins and hormones.
    Milk, by comparison is 87% water, 4.9% lactose (glucose + galactose bonded together, which can only be broken down with lactase in the small intestine), 3.4% fats, and 3.3% proteins.
    So water aside, the basic building blocks of milk (fat, sugars and proteins) only represent about 4.4% of whole blood, yet they represent 11.6% of whole milk, and the sugars and proteins are more manufactured than simply filtered out of the blood. They're not roaming around in the blood in the same form that they appear in the milk.

      daemn42 agreed. The title should have been honest. Milk has blood, milk tastes good. Humans are disgusting

      Poop is just filtered blood. Hair is just filtered blood. They should just delete the video and redo it with more nuance. I'd be more ok with it if the title was "Milk is just tasty sweat".
