1990 Euros SP Katia Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov

  • Katia and Sergei only made 2 miskates, Katia two footed the double Axel and then fell during the death spiral. The 3rd error mentioned by Toller Cranston is not an error, but the angle of the camera doesn't let you see the actual step sequence and the small lift.

I was going to make this comment. This is very mechanical skating. Scott Hamilton relates making a comment about the joy of skating and Sergei saying something along the lines of, “ it’s a job.” I’m glad they were able to find the joy again and keep skating for several more years after getting out from under the Soviet grinding machine.

@@Alex-Astashov No country is perfect, and there are MANY (uncountable, really) policies and practices in America that I disagree with, and yes, I agree that you could even name some things as a "machine" as well. The USSR doesn't exist anymore, so I cannot hate it in present tense. I also make a distinction between the Soviet regime, which was diabolical and deserved to be resisted, and Russian people themselves. (I do not "hate" people, even though I may disagree with some people's beliefs and/or behaviors.) However, it was brutally oppressive to anyone who dared defy the political leadership. I read Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, along with other accounts from others who dared to speak truth and were persecuted during the Soviet era. They were/are heroes. Countless people fled the Soviet Union and the oppression and injustice they experienced there. Gordeeva and Grinkov are probably my favorite skating pair of all time. I read Katya's biography, where she speaks about the Soviet training system. There is no question that it consistently produced top athletes. As far as skating goes, one thing they did right was incorporate ballet training. No, the USSR never personally affected me, since I lived outside it, and don't have Eastern European ancestry, but that doesn't mean I can't see the problems with the system as it was, for those who lived under its tyranny. Peace to you.

Just read that the commentor is Toller Cranston. Whoever he is. But what an ass.
Also, this was the time period Katia spoke about in her book about how the coaches were not treating G&G well at all. Exhausting them. Making them spend time apart.

@@SusanBrooklyn Well, first you said he was a jerk. Then you insulted me by saying that I was allowed to my own opinion, no matter how wrong I was. Now you are saying that Toller didn't have anything nice to say. He was very nice. Katia and Sergei made 2 major mistakes. He didn't comment on the very first mistake they made like "over the top" Scott Hamilton would have done "oh nooo, a double footed landing on the Axel from Katia. That's nooooo how you want to start your technical program. That will affect both I am afraaaaid" , You are biased and that's it. There was nothing nice to say here. The costumes were awful, the choreo childish, and the mistakes were due to a lack of concentration from both. Exactly what was he supposed to say? He has been commenting on their programs since they first started skating. Years before the Olympics in 1998, Toller Cranston was already proclaiming them the future Olympic Champions. Do you know how many times Toller Cranston has praised them? Do some research. And finally, Toller Cranston also commented on the 1990 Euro Free Skate....yes the Romeo and Juliet program, exactly the one after this mambo jumbo of a program. HE WAS WORRIED that the judges would not be able to appreciate in full the Romeo and Juliet program and hoped GG would not penalized. He also thought that the Romeo and Juliet program was the only winning program, even if there were still many pairs ahead of GG to stake.
