    The Beatles have used Electric Guitar Strings on this Acoustic-Electric to achieve their signature sound. They tend to Outlast Acoustic Guitar Strings plus they sound great with the pickup.

Despite the laminate construction I have always liked the look and sound of this guitar, and love the gorgeous crown inlay fret markers. It sounded fab on the original Beatle records and yours sounds fab too. Congrats my lucky friend.

    I bought a J160E back in 1991. It came with a deplorable "buttplug" end pin jack that sucked so bad I took it out and rewired it for a side mount, traditional jack and filled the oversize hole with a white Corian ring plug and a standard ivoroid end strap plug. The guitar has always had bad string grounding issues. All there is for string grounding is a metal plate under the bridge that the balls of the strings are supposed to ground against, but if anyone uses D'Addario strings with the painted ball ends, only the low and high E will ground. Acoustically, it doesn't hold a candle to my 1980s Goya acoustic steel string guitar, or my 1999 Epiphone AJ 15! Electrically, it sounds good when it can be grounded properly. Overall, if it weren't for the Beatles connection, I can't see how this guitar is popular at all. Another video on this guitar is demonstrated in acoustic and electric with the electric demo showing how bad the sucker hums! This video got my thumbs down for not showing how it played when plugged in which is why I wasted my time watching it - I expected to see it played when plugged in.

    • @voxsupreme
      @voxsupreme Před rokem

      Amen! People are "blinded" because "The Beatles" used this model, wich was a compromice between a pure acoustic and an all electric guitar. I've played Beatles songs since 1963, (yes I' m a 73 year old Beatles Nerd), and the latest 20 years used a Gibson J45 with an K&K Pure Western that Really picks up the Full Richness of the J45 acoustic sound. The J160e honestly sounds like a tinny toy compared to my J45. Try one,, it looks the same as the J160e, but sounds WAY better!

    I have a Gibson J-160e 1962 and I modded it by adding a L.R. Baggs Lyric system on it without drilling an additional holes on it. I added a pull-up switch on the volume knob and a switch to cut off the battery when not in use. It’s awesome because I can use it on a sound system with the lyric knob pulled up and with an amp when pushed down. I can also reverse it to its original state if I decide to sell it in the future to a purist buyer’s market.

    I use DR Zebra strings, which has its E thru G strings alternate between bronze and nickel, for my two guitars with under string pickups, (one being an Epiphone version of the 160E). It has a nice acoustic song and my bass strings could still be heard through an amp. (Standard acoustic bronze stings tends to have diminished bass tones, and the trebles are too prominent).

A lots of buzzing arise while trying to get down to the lowest action. Furthermore, the saddle is not actually touching the bottom of the bridge when there is a spring metal bar underneath the saddle to control its height. The guitar sounds a bit unpleasant as well.

    I have a custom shop reissue as well, made in 2012. I believe it's a 1968 version since it has multiple rings around the soundhole. The J160E isn't the greatest acoustic guitar in the world with its laminated soundboard and ladder bracing, but yours, mine and those who have similar Js can't help but notice that with the right strings and miked up properly, you can get very close to that Beatles sound. Fun fact: The Gibson J160E was played on every Beatle album.

John played it on the White Album and on Abbey Road, Let It Be etc. His Gibson J160E was played afterwards as well during the Plastic Ono Period and beyond. Google it and you will be enlightened.

    There are only two acoustic guitars with volume or tone nobs and those two guitars are of course the Gibson J160-E(Most famously used by The Beatles) and a Martin D-18E(Most famously used by Kurt Cobain at MTV Unplugged '93)

    Wanted to point out - and perhaps you know this - that the 'Abbey Road' cover photo you have at 1.14 is actually a photoshopped version of the cover in which the Zebra Crossing's 'stripes' have been altered.
