Rik Emmett (Triump) - "Magic Power" Live 5.16.15 at Daryl's House Club
Dave Dunlop on guitar & vocals with Rik
What a fantastic night with Rik & Dave playing songs from all periods in Rik's amazing career, such a special evening for all his fans.
Recorded & Mixed by Peter Moshay
Video by Gary Ljungquist - Hudba
WOW ...he sounds like he did when they recorded it back in the day!!! LOVE IT~~~
Agreed. Rik's pipes were not what they once had been when I saw him in a small club in the late 90s, but it seems after the Triumph reunion period (where the vocals for both Rik and Gil were still a bit iffy) it seems like he's refined his vocal technique, judiciously softening a bit, and getting results more like in the younger days. Quite impressive.
Wow was the first word I thought of and low and behold your comment was the first I read, you said it all.
Doesnt he tho?
Hell ya he does man. Awesome!!
Yup
Now that is how you age gracefully as a rock star. 🤘
Well said.
Right?? I'm still crushing on him 😍
Yup, sex... NO DRUGS, and rock n roll.
Rik is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and one of the most talented too!
Well said
This guy single handedly out performed everyone @ the 83 US festival, no one out sung or out played Rik on metal Sunday. and he did it in 104 degree heat and hot stage lights while running around. amazing performance!
And I was Blessed* to be there, not far from under him, witnessing this glorious, historical event! Seem like 15 years ago, not close to 40 years ago! !!
Quiet Riot was pretty close
Fact. Triumph were the good guys amidst the degenerates ( who I also loved). Anyone watching that knows they came out on top, with Scorpions in close second, imho.
@sunnyrock4404 IMHO. Missed it. My gf stole the tickets, sold them for dope. I stupidly forgave her. The jokes on her, she's not 16 and beautiful anymore, lol.
goddamn....so amazing...tears
a 70 year old man hitting this? Unbelievable. What a talented dude. Seems very genuine too.
HIS VOICE IS ONE OF THE BEST IN ROCK AND ROLL PERIOD.
2023, and this is pretty incredible. What a classic!
Rik still has the chops !!
Crazy how some guys voices can stand up to time and others fade...well done Rik
One of the most beautiful voices in music.
Who the f*ck would give this a thumbs down?? This is fine fine stuff.
Rik still has the Magic Power!
Most underrated voice ever still sounds great
I always believe singers should hang it up when their voices get shot. Rik sounds like he's got another 50 years in him. wow
Dave Dunlop is fantastic in his own right. Rik knew what he was doing teaming up with him. They are great together. Such a great duo. They are both great human beings too. That matters to me. I was fortunate enough to open for Rik and his band. He saw my white Marshalls and my singer told him what an inspiration Rik's playing was for me growing up. Coming off stage after the set, Rik grabbed me and told me to leave my rig up on stage, he asked me if I knew Magic Power (the encore). Being stunned I responded with, "What version? The album, or the live '82 Baltimore one?" He said, "I don't even remember that. You'll be fine." It was amazing, we did a 10-minute round robin guitar solo Between Rik, Doug, and me. This also happened to be the first date that me and my girl had. 17 years later she's still here, so I might owe Rik for more than just a great musical experience....:)
Awesome story Dan, thank you for sharing! I’ve always admired Rik as such an amazing virtuoso, who also happens to have equally amazing vocals, lyrics, such a great talent that you would hope would also be such an equally amazing human being. Good stuff.
Great story 😊
Great story man!
Big Triumph fan. I have always loved Rik Emmett's voice and guitar playing!
Damn this brings a big smile to my face, a flood of memories to my mind and although im not an emotional guy my eyes well up with tears of happiness while I listen to it! Thanks Rik for the music. I really believe the lack of this type of music and artist is a big part of whats wrong with our younger generation today, really the world in general. Remember when we couldnt wait for one of our favorite bands new albums to come out or the announcement of their new tour dates. What talent, a lot of musicians lose a step as they get older, Rik's just gotten better!
I'm with ya man!
Amen....I was 13 in 1985 when I saw Triumph in concert . Totally blown away!!!
Man, they were a Great band.
Triumph was and is one of the greatest Bands of all time. Ric Emmett very under rated musician
Triumph rules!
i AGREE jAMES! Rick was sooo under rated big time! With his Lyrics, its a story.. and the guitar story. geezzz what happened to music!?
Blame Canada for that!!
Too many great bands..to mention..
It would be cool to see a 1 off show even,..,
This may be as close as Triumph I'll see
Tanx 4 post
Such a fantastic voice. It hasn't aged one bit. This is what vocal talent is like.
He still has the magic power of music. ❤️
Grew up listening to Triumph. Rik Emmett remains one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. His vocals are still so clear and precise. Amazing.
Jill Gibson you are so right, girl.
Jill Gibson I saw Triumph twice at Alpine Valley great outdoor concert.
I agree totally Jill Glenn Augustyn
VERY well said! Rik is one of my favorite guitar players!
Jill Gibson His voice is as strong and crystaline as when he was in his 20's & 30's. A rare thing.
The most underrated Guitarist-Singer ever!
Tony Clifton absolutely true!
Completely agree! It’s not an exaggeration. He really is the most underrated of all time.
One of the most under rated musicians of our time. Rik Emmett is incredible!!!
I'm blown away. Rik sounds incredible. One of rocks most underrated vocalists.
Maybe that's the reason why he still has his vocal chops. Being under rated for decades makes you not rest on your laurels and fight the good fight and push away father time.
Dammit! It is nearly 3 am and my house is sleeping! My singing is not welcomed 🙂 LOL!
Damn right. Almost Geddy Lee high notes
the guy never got his just due imo......hes a freaking legend in my eyes
Agreed. And Gil Moore was dumb af to let him get away. Silly to insist outside writers create songs for Gil to sing, when they had such a stud in Rik Emmett writing bangers for them. And I'm not dissing Gil's vocals here...he was amazing too. But dang, to piss off your bandmate and primary singles writer? Not a smart move. I always hear Rik say in tht one interview of how Triumph was all Gil's band, so that pretty much tells the story.
Love Rik Emmett's voice
I am 56 yrs. old, woke at 5 a.m. and this song was on my mind. Singing on the way to take a leak.
This song or one of Triumphs great songs, is always what is still rocking in my head to this very day. And my girl can't figure out why I wake up singing especially when I am as sick as I am.
I missed this Darryls House show, but I will find it.
Triumph was a highly underrated band. 3 bad ass musicians putting out all that sound, simply incredible ! And Rick still has that voice at his age ?
Simply gifted, and it didn't go to waste. That's obvious Rick, if your reading this ?
39 years later from when I first heard Triumph, and I am waking to your music in my head ?
It's obviously still in my heart !!! Because my head has seen its better days !
Great acoustical version and voice ? Spot on brother..
Long live Rick Emmett !
Ok. Brought me to tears. This guy is a true musician. Saw him at the US festival California, look it up. Love you man
I hate getting old.
Since the only antidote to growing old is dying young, I've learned to live with it. Remember, it's always better to be looking down at the green than to be looking up at the brown.
You're Doing it Wrong then..I Do Wish I Knew then What I Know Now But Whataya Gonna Do?
HOLY crap! OK, I pressed play feeling kindof sad, thinking, how many octaves down is he going to have to start this song? What? Who on this planet after all these years can still hit notes like that? THEN... two acoustics, for a powerful song like Magic Power, they built up the tension, nailed it! I'm floored, stunned, impressed... Amazing!
rick seems like a great guy, but then again, he's Canadian so there's that. his voice still sounds like 1981. what a underrated band. saw them front row in 1985 and i thought i was gonna die from the volume of pyrotechnics going off in my face. their live shows were second to none.
They did indeed put on a "Blinding Light Show".
Lucky.
What amazes me about Rik Emmett is that he manages to sing nearly in Geddy Lee's range without falsetto - *and* he is an immensely accomplished lead guitarist, as well.
Actually, he and Geddy have virtually the same vocal range - or had, I should say, as Ged stopped reaching for those crazy notes from the early albums quite a few years ago, while Rik in this video still sounds like he can hit the range from his youth with ease. Geddy's highest note on a studio recording is a Bb5 in "Cygnus X-1", while Rik actually hits a B5 on a couple of tunes ("Big Lie" and "Cool Down"). For some reason, though, classic Geddy sounds higher than Rik, even when they're singing the same note. I would say it has to do with their respective combination of singing style and vocal timbre - Rik's sound tends to be less dramatic, but fuller and more rounded, which makes it come across as less intense than Geddy's. It's that intensity that makes Geddy sound higher than Rik when, in fact, they have pretty much the same upper range.
Rik Emmet is amazing
His voice is still golden, OMG. Recently rewatched Triumph's US Festival gig. Man was legend.
This guy is fucking killing it, still.
Rik still has his awesome voice, Triumph was maybe the most underrated rock band of all time.
you are so right. i think they got lumped in with hair metal and they where so much better then that. especially rik.
Maybe? They definitely are one of the most underrated bands of all time.
His pipes are as clear as they were 30+ years ago. Amazing!!!!
Crazy that he was still singing in this high key in his 60s. Impressive.
He fucking nailed it. He still has an amazing voice wow
Omg how could anyone not like this? Rik Emmett is a legend. He sounds great.
yup still passes the goose bump test!!!!
Ha . Well said. :)
I was hired to record Triumph’s live record with my Artisan Mobile recording truck in the 80s in Orlando, Florida. I had never heard Triumph before the live date. I remember being gobsmacked (great brit word) hearing Rik play and sing and this particular song rang in my head for months after. His voice sounds incredible after all the years. Great memories!
Man!!! Still love Triumph in 2019. Their music never gets old. Been listening since early 80s. Wow still sounds fresh and new. Anyone else listening feeling the way I do.👍😎🐶Me and Bell Bell think this is one of the most underrated bands ever. They get no love. I dont get it. I know they're from Canada. But they are almost as great as Rush which says alot in my book.👍😇😎🐶👍
If I could have only one vocal sound- it would be Rik Emmett in Triumph's Heyday. And today. Fuuuck.
Just wow...all I can say is wow.
Jesus Christ his voice better than 99.9% of today’s pop stars
I remember seeing Triumph perform live during there "Allied Forces" tour. They stood out as the most talented and gifted musicians I ever witnessed. Always sounded like they were playing straight from the studio.
My high school days, i have to admit i got misty eyed watching this. this song belongs to my generation class of "81" baby !
I am getting old but somehow I feel young wild and free!!!!!!!!
Such an amazing artist, Triumph will always be one of my favorite bands!
My 71 Datsun 510, cassette deck, with this song riding shotgun. Damn, take me back ❤
For a minute there life was pretty fucking good
Whenever the worlds trampling over me, this songs makes me feel better. And the last two years (2020-2022) I've needed this song a lot. Thank you Rik
A true Canadian talent. Been saying for 30 years how way underrated he was. To this day all those Triumph songs still sound fresh and alive👍
Killer vocals. This song will never grow old. Love it.
Rik Emmett's guitar teacher was also my guitar teacher in music college in Toronto in the 80's; the late Peter Harris.
All these years later and he can still hit the notes that left me shortly after puberty.
amazing
put your damn phones down and enjoy this masterpiece
One of the Greatest vocalists and Guitarist of all time.
I agree, totally underrated !
Tears streaming...
makes me want to be back in the 80s
I am child of 80s meaning HS 84-88. What happened to music? This Survivor, Journey all these great songs written by the artists, sung and instruments played by the artists, no protools crap or stage theatrics, and I feel good listening to them not depressed. Frisson is actual term think. Yes I am old, but damn We had some great music in late 70s and 80s.
I can't believe how well his voice has held up.
Still sounds amazing
His voice is so Amazing!!
He should take Triumph back out on tour
This was 6 years ago but his voice is exactly like it was in the 80's.
just gave me goosebumps to hear a guy in his 60's can still sing and play exactly the same as 35 years ago... long live King Emmet
Are you fucking kidding me!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit!!!!!!!!!
I saw Rik and Dave do this song in Syracuse a few years back and about two dozen girls ( okay, women in their 40's -50's) rush the stage to dance...Rik was a bit surprised but seemed to marvel at himself that he in his mid 60's still could get women to do things like that! :)
Ladies & Gentlemen
The Legendary Rik Emmett
our whole lives... these songs... that magic power, fighting the good fight... oh Canada...
23 people obviously weren't 18 in 1983! Rock on Rik!!
Never grows old. Rik is an amazing singer / player. One of my all time favs for sure.
Saw Triumph at the '83 US festival, they were my favorite band that day
I hear everyone say that. Sadly, i was a bit young to go see concerts in 1983, so I missed out.
Good GOD he still sounds the same😲🧐🤔🤩🤗😎💪🏻✝️💪🏾🔥💖
Still fighting the good fight @Rick Emmett
Dudes not even trying, totally chilled. He's kept himself in great shape. Good for him
Wow! All I can say is holy shit!
Wow.... His voice is still there... just like in 82. 👍👏
Gotta love it, they're playing Canadian Made Godin Guitars.
one of the greatest rock voices(and bands) ever! if i had a buckett list,,,,hearing rick sing live would be at the top!!! wow,,you still have a fantastic voice!!!
Seen these guys back in the early 80's at sam Houston colosseum, Houston Texas.
2020 and I still miss Triumph.
Rik was awesome. Apparently still is, even if this was 7 or 8 years ago. Dad Rik rules!
Fuck me his voice. Awesome.
This made me cry like a baby. He just keeps getting better.
As of 11-27-2015 what TWO idiots disliked this? Rik is pure music genius.
exactly!
As of 5/6/16 the idiot count is at 7. As they say, you can't fix stupid.
David Morgan 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing! This cat has definitely taken great care of his voice over the years!
His voice is still soooo good!
I'm so glad that I was young, wild and free at the time when this song came out.
I cannot believe how incredible Rik still sounds after all this time. Absolutely incredibly beautiful voice. Brought tears to my eyes.
Excellent rendition!! I was fortunate enough to see Triumph at the US Festival 1983 they were in their prime. I see Mr. Emmett still has that magic power!
As a Proud Canadian who grew up listening to Triumph, & all the other Canadian Rock Bands, this Made Me a little emotional. 🩵I've been watching a lot of the old footage of Triumph recently, & seeing Rik perform this Beauty, well I can still see the Wonderful Sparkle of the Young Man in his eyes🩵
Omg I have always been a huge fan of Rik's voice. I can't believe he can still do that. Wowee! And the little Pete Townshend reference - love it!
all their songs has this wonder ful 'positive' vibe.
Wow!! Very impressed in Rik's sound today!!! He hasn't missed a beat!!! One of my favorite all time songs!! For a few minutes while the song played I felt young again!!!
Incredible that he can still sing in that register. He's in the minority for sure. Awesome performance !
I saw VH about 5 years ago. Eddie was a treat to hear, but I could have done without Dave and Alex.
HOLLY SHIT RICK STILL HAS IT LIKE NOONE ELSE AFTER ALLLL THESE YEARS..
Never let anyone say that a voice inavoidably wears out through the years....what a giant
I Love Canadian ROCKers
This is simply too good! Emmett comes alive....this guy is my inspiration for being a natural pro at playing guitar and singing in tune. I love the 2nd guitarist as well. So cool!
