    Commenting to say that Michael, you got us through our outdrive replacement with zero prior knowledge. We just started her today and everything works great. We are so proud of our work, and not to mention, we saved $1000’s doing it ourselves. THANK YOU for these videos!!!!

    Very step by step informative. Never heard of a 10 or 11 inch nut. By far the most professional DIY video I have ever seen. Cheers!!!

      Dave, great to hear from you again. The videos that will be uploaded over the next few months showing all the bellows replacements were actually filmed last year.
      They have finally made it to the front of the upload que and will hopefully be very beneficial to our viewers.
      We have spent a good portion of this summer replacing several parts on the inboard 3.0L Mercruiser engine.
      Those videos will be uploaded next summer. Many more helpful videos to come, we promise!

    Hi Michael,
    Thank you for all of your videos, they have been very helpful. I have a couple of questions.
    First, the brass nut holding the shift cable got stripped when we were trying to remove it. Any tips on how to get that off? Tried soaking in PB blaster and no success yet.
    Second, is the gimbal bearing in the replacement kit that you link to a sealed bearing? And do you recommend using sealed vs not?
    Thanks!

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching, any update? Are you referring to the jam-nut located on the shift cable housing just above inboard engine?
      If so, you may be able to use a pair of lock-pliers to get a firm grip on it and break it loose. Most important thing however, is to not damage any surrounding parts as you do that.
      In regards to the Bellows replacement kit, the kit does include a brand new gimbal grease-sealed bearing.
      Keep us posted on your progress. Looking forward to 2024, many more helpful videos to come. 👍🧰

    Hello Michael
    I need retap my bell housing on a alpha one gen 2
    For shifter cable do I need a straight or tapered pipe tap
    Thank you

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching, we can hopefully help. Tap size might be between 1/4x18 and 1/4x20…ish. Best thing to do is contact Mercruiser hq directly and speak to a technician.
      They will be able to get you the proper tap measurement for your exact serial number outdrive.
      However in the meantime, below is a tap kit that might be best for the mission.

    Thank you for all the great info and help!
    Question....my oil reservoir was leaking and found the hose attachment was broken (where it goes into the hull next to the shift cable bellow) Is this a requirement to have if I keep my gear oil checked on a regular basis? Or could i plug that? Very new at boat maintenance and any info helps. Thank you again!

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks for watching, any update? We haven’t modified the oil line in the past. We would keep it as is and replace oil hose. Keep us posted. 👍

    • @anthonylandis8181
      @anthonylandis8181 Před měsícem +1

      @DIYwithMichaelBorders I did pull the hose out and plug it on the bell housing side. It may not be the best long term solution, however after seeing the other issues we have determined that after we patch what is needed to get us through the summer, we are going to replace it all with new for next year. Thank you again!

    What's the difference In the gen 1 and gen 2 bellow kit? I accidentally installed the gen 2 bellow kit. Will it be OK? OR should I take it all out again?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Good morning ☕️ main differences will be water tube and oil hose. Gen 1’s do not have an oil hose.
      The bellows will be surprisingly similar however with very little difference.

    Isn't it possible to replace the bellows without removing the Gimbal?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community.
      Are you referring to the gimbal bearing? If so, it is. Most will replace gimbal bearing while everything is opened up however that will be personal preference. We recommend replacing gimbal bearing during a bellows replacement if the bearing itself is making sounds or it hasn’t been replaced in a decade. 👍
