  • Ray Gun 'the Bible of Music & Style' Magazine under the art direction of David Carson was a breeding ground for the evolution of alternative culture in the US. Although Carson only worked on the magazine for the first three years of its circulation, his original graphic design style and tone for the displaying the experiential set the tone for the subculture publication of the decade.

This was so well done and super interesting! I’ve never heard of Ray Gun before but I think it’s cool to see the connections between alternative bands’ album art (at the time) and Carson’s art style.
It makes me wonder if at some point, they both fed into each other as the aesthetic continued progressing culturally.

Thanks for the super insightful comment! Carson did actually design cover art for bands in the 90s because they felt he did such a good job at representing them visually when featured in Ray Gun Mag so Im sure that then influenced their own view of their image!

I'm a graphic design student and massive fan of Ray Gun, it influences a lot of my work, mostly when it comes to typography. I loved how you found a way to transform graphic design layouts into fashion inspiration. Makes me think how pretty much all art is ruled by the same principles. Also, really good rundown of Carson's philosophy, made me think a lot, especially the last thing you said on the video. Great work.

Thanks so much for this comment! I'm developing my own fashion designs and am really inspired by the lasting influence of Carson's thinking towards aesthetics. It definitely can be applied to so many disciplines of design. Wishing you the best with your graphic design studies! 💕
