🔴 Embracing Randomness & Imperfection in Graphic Design & Typography w/ Chris Ashworth

- Has design gotten to digital? Are we craving something more human and hand done? Elusive, designer, typographer and artist, Chris Ashworth, talks about his process and why being human is better than perfect. The Japanese have a term for this, it's called Wabi-Sabi.
Chris Ashworth is Creative Director of the Modern Life & Devices Creative Studio at Microsoft. He graduated from York College of Art in 1990, was awarded the UKs most up and coming typographer in 1993, and by 1997 was at the helm of California’s ‘Bible of Music and Style’ - Ray Gun Magazine.
His personal work has included creative projects with Michael Stipe and commissions for IDEA Magazine with his work appearing in over 50 international design books and publications. The continuum throughout his 30 year career has been a healthy obsession with typography - and specifically his ‘Swiss Grit’ take on it, as well a hands-on approach to the creation of his work - choosing paper over pixels, every time.

dude, I love this guy. ive followed him on instagram years ago. super cool to see him on here!
you took the words right outta my keyboard
I was never a fan of David Carson / RayGun back in those days, simply because the design style was too messy for my taste. 20 over years later now, Chris Ashworth, you’ve totally changed my mind. I’m now a believer! 😄
Best interview in quite a while, finally someone with some REAL design chops. Great one guys!
Chris is amazing! It was great to learn about his creative process.
Pro tip: you can watch movies at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Moses Samuel Definitely, been watching on kaldrostream for since december myself :)
So I don't believe this was ever answered in the video but there is system called the Swiss Grid. I learned about it back in my graphic design history class in college although that was a while back. Typically for print design, such as magazine spread layouts, a number of vertical columns will be used to create order to the type and layout. From what I remember the most significant difference with a Swiss grid is that it also requires horizontal columns along with the vertical ones (and possibly a baseline grid) to essentially be even more structured. With the use of horizontal columns you pretty much are now also controlling how text starts and stops vertically. Layouts designed with a Swiss grid look like an actual grid, visually breaking things up into squares on the page due to the placement of the guides.
One of my favourite interviews so far! One of the legends!
I'm so thankful for the existence of this CZcams´s channel, thank you guys!!
I've been finding inspiration in his work for years! I remember discovering Raygun magazine back in 2009 when I was in design school!
Awesome!! Chris has influenced a lot of designers since the 90s. Fantastic designer.
Chris rules! Thank you Chris for interviewing Chris!! 😅
One of my true inspiration! Swiss grit is such an amazing moment brought by Chris ! Thank you sm chris and futr :)
Superb Interview, His era at York College was amazing just a year or 2 before my time there. Good t-hear he's not lost his twang.
Love Chris' work. This is awesome
Incredible. This bloke low key the banksy of typography! Loved this!
Super inspired by both of you and OMG Chris is super humble and damn, so genuine ❤ Really touched my heart with his humbling tools independent mindset
I could not love this episode more. So much inspiration from a different point of view! Thank you to TheFutur & Chris Ashworth. I'm off to tape something to the bottom of my shoes now 😎✌️
These videos are always an Inspiration!
Super thankful for these videos guys
Just discovered this both the channel and the artist Chris Ashworth. I retired from a related field in design, probably nearing the edge of the page. It was interesting to hear this approach. I do like analog because I grew up in that era.
was obsessed by his work!
Very refreshing and motivational guy. And he's a Northern Brit to boot! Great interview. Thanks
Thank you.
finally we are getting a closer look to this king😩💗
one step closer.
really amazing interview, feeling insightfull
great episode! Thanks!
As a green creative practitioner, this interview is really helpful and inspirational. Thank you for this.
Wow loved this
Takes me back to the college days, respect for using mixed media 🤘
I went to design school and took topography in the 80’s and 90’s…I believe there is a lot to be said for sketching out out fonts and designs by pencil assembling a logo ect by tracing the font enlarging it with an Arto graph then spending hours painstakingly inking your design!!
The process in itself was an art form which in turn created beautiful design glad to see it coming back, I knew it would.
I loved design school in the late 80’s the money sucked so that’s why I’m a railroad engineer who will do Graphic design in retirement lol! Where can I find a used art I graph!!
I love Chris's work, it's masterful.
P. S spot the 39 year old lol
what do you mean?
@@TheFuturAcademy I mean I'm 39 and remember this style in the 90s 🙂
Fantastic vid :))
There's a company that do dry transfer letter packs and self adhesive vinyl letters called chartpak. Pretty cool stuff to experiment in the real world :)
wow!
Neat. Thanks!
Amazing video. Thank you for all the info and inspirational. I would to know where to get the hat. “God is a designer “.
The mystery man!
Best guest since Sagi Haviv came on.
👏
I don't know Who I just met?
He really is amazing...✌
Yes he is.
Hi ! Thank you for this amazing interview. I am a Graphic Designer student and at the moment I am doing a research for my dissertation on Wabi Sabi and this interview was like breathing fresh air. Could you please let me know if you know something more in relation to Wabi Sabi in connection to Wabi Sabi ? I am trying to get in touch with Chris Ashworth for a quick interview but I imagine it will be challenging :) I really appreciate all your help!
did you get the chance to do an interview? i hope you got to!
@@kayaeki I tried to contact the interviewer in this show too but basically he is untouchable for us common people 🤣🤣🤣🤣 on the other hand Chris Ashworth was super humble and nice. And I had a gorgeous interview with him. Thank you for asking 🙏🏻☺️ By the way I got a A on my dissertation and I graduated first class last year ✨
Digging the hat! Is there a place I can buy one?
Soon.
Please do another longer version. Perhaps Chris working through a few samples.
Chris is an amazing designer and I've been following him for a while. He represents some of the best aspects of expressive/postmodern design. This may be critical, but I think his work is stunted by corporate work, family, and whatever else. I mean he says he only gets to pursue the work he really loves once he has "put the kids to bed." And it also doesn't seem like anyone at his corporate jobs cares at all about his highly creative and original design work. I know he makes good money and has a couple houses which is sweet, but at some point wouldn't you regret not just pursuing your passion and continue to work in the realm of music even if it pays less than a corporate job? These are things I am constantly thinking about as a design student. I would rather make a meager living than work for companies who don't care about true, humble artistic endeavors. (Also some moral issues would arise if I was at Microsoft since they are helping ICE agents...but that's besides the point).
1:45 I always thought these were made by David Carson
David Carson did the magazine for a few years before Chris took over.
Has he worked much with David Carson? Looks like a very similar style.
I was thinking the same (re: David Carson)... Very similar. They are both amazing designers.
@@nigellawrence2745 Just coming back to this as I realise I had confused them over the years.
David Carson inspired?

interview with mike creative mint please
What's wrong with his website?
It’s not ready for public viewing.
If I came across 20,000 sheets of Letraset I would lose my mind. My word...
is he the thom yorke of design?
If you like Chris Ashworth you definitely check out Craig Ward
It’s good because he got away with abstract design in a commercial environment. As far as commercial design goes though its quite ineffective to 99.9% of audiences.
i thought he will be look like jamie hewlett 🤣
take some meds mr Doe
Got any?
