2024 Kia Sportage / Trendy Self-Sabotage

- The Kia Sportage is a great crossover with much to love, but I find that its desire for a fresh appeal, keeps it from taking down the segment leaders. Still, it gives the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and several others something to be concerned about.
Thank you, Royal South Mazda, for letting me test drive the Sportage in today's video!

Small fix, Pricing for the PHEV is $40,965 - $45,465!
I've had my sx prestige for 2 months The HVAC/ media screen has become second nature for me, convenient and easy to use. The whole interior is an absolute pleasure to occupy.
My best friend just bought a 2024 Sportage LX. He likes it. It's not bad looking, is well equipped for a base model and has lots of room.
Great video 👍🏼
One of my college professors traded in her 2013 Lexus ES for one of these. This doesn’t look bad at all; i still have my doubts over Kia durability tho
She must have needed the extra space otherwise such a trade would be just plain stupid. Other variables?
KIA/ Hyundai reliability has improved over the years but still fall behind the Japanese brands.
@@wholeNwon maybe. dunno. Not my business.
@@brokeboy87 In April, my Lexus will be 26 yo and everything still works. It's a joy to own and to drive.
@@brokeboy87 are you certain about it ? Still new models too making posts under "Engine Failure Kia/Hyundai" group... lets even ignore this ! The fact is KIA / HYUNDAI refusing warranty for some case is disaster !
Well done review. Contemplating buying one hopefully sometime in the next year.
I'm not a fan of the exterior design. The Mazda CX-5 is the best looking in this segment, despite being 4 years older than the Sportage. I like the near-luxury, simple interior of the CX-5 as well.
The CX-5 is one of the best aging mainstream cars!
The CX5 is a great vehicle.
I agree it is ugly up front. Not a fan of digital dashboards all around. It's a copycat vehicle trying to look like everything else; just another suv.
SPORTAGE interior is better and KIA infotainment system is way better than the CX5 .
@@chickenfarm09 sportage looks like what else? If they did a copycat design they sure did a piss poor job of copying
I just bought the 24 xline sportage and love it
Congrats!
It's only hard to run the HVAC/media system if you're 90 years old. We loved it over the Honda yawn, and the ridiculous noisy Toyota RAV4.
Another great review. Commenting for the Algorithm Gods 😅
Much obliged
I like the base trim in this. The body design is attractive to me.
A nod to Kia for using a traditional automatic gearbox.
my parents ended up buying a top trim hybrid and they love it, but when driving it, to me it felt "plastic" and lifeless. Something about it just feels off. Feels like the off brand wired controller your friend gave you when you were growing up.
It's steer by wire. Felt a little weird at first but that's generally how steer by wire feels.
Any impressions of how the speakers/radio sounds on this model (the standard speaker setup?) I'm not looking for window shaking bass, but some entry level systems are pretty good, others are really bad. Wondering how this one rates for music?
This one is decent but the treble distorts at high volume kind of quickly, which can make it harsh, solid punch though, bass shouldn't be a problem.
I just bought an EX that has the base stereo, and it sounds great. Make sure to adjust the treble and bass higher in the settings and you will be good to go.
Hi All, Good Day.
Can anyone suggest best SUVs in and around $35k.
Thank you in advance.
We are set to pick up a '24 Sportage EX Hybrid on Monday (Feb 26) and made the choice after considering the RAV4, CRV, and Tucson (all in Hybrid form - non-hybrids did not make the "short list"). Wife's daily driver is a 2017 Ioniq Hybrid, which has been excellent thus far (over 75k), and which she will continue to drive for at least several years (with any luck...). Our experience with the Ioniq and an older Prius have made us firm proponents for Hybrid vehicles.
The dual-function climate / radio control scheme does seem like a mis-step, but there are 2 mitigations: 1) there are some redundant audio controls on the steering wheel, and 2) there is a setting that allows you to set a DEFAULT for that control panel, so after usage you would know that it "always" returns to one mode or the other depending on your preference.
I bought a Tucson in December (Merry Christmas to me). I checked out all the usual suspects and it was the most refined and enjoyable for the money. I liked the Sportage exterior styling better, but the Hyundai interior better. I think the Tucson was a bit quieter and rode better too. Plus the Kia dealer was the usual slimy, dealer markup kind of place many Kia dealers are infamous for. Meanwhile the Hyundai dealer had a large inventory on the lot and would actually deal with no pressure. As far as the RAV4 went, the interior is dated, cramped, noisier and rides worse. But it has that rep for top reliability so i get it.
at the end of the day it just comes down to what car feels the best for you. I got in an accident on the 29th so I just went around everwere and did alot of test driving and fell in love with the new kia sportage . Love the push to start button😂😅
MSRP isn't everything. I cross shopped the Sportage hybrid and Mazda CX-5 turbo premium and while I was able to negotiate a couple thousand under MSRP for the Mazda, the Kia dealerships all had "market adjustments" above MSRP on their upper trim Shortages.
I really like Kia's warranty, I had to use it once on my Optima nearly five years into its life and well after most other manufacturers would've abandoned me. Kia (and Hyundai) make nice vehicles with great warranties. I just wish the dealers wouldn't torpedo the value with pure-profit markups. The same could be said of Toyota.
That depends on your location too, Kia used to be known for huge incentives that would also wreck the resale of the used ones!
I think its location also. We live in Upstate NY, but we till own a house in Florida we rent and we have relatives that live there. In Florida, the dealership has a 'southeast regional adjustment' added to the Sportage hybrid models ($1000 markup), plus they typically start trade negotiations at at least $1000 below Blue book. For the same vehicle in Upsate NY, the Kia dealer here sells at MSRP and usually offers very close to KBB trade price. So yes, I think its regional.@@Realistick
@@MikeD1101asame i live in upstate NY and its all at MSRP or even below with dealership deals. I think it totally depends on region. They're cheaper than Toyotas right now and are the only brand that even offers a 10yr/100k
Could you try get your hands on a forte gt? Be interesting to see your thoughts!
I’ll try my best to!
Both the Car & Driver and Motor Trend reviews are very critical of the poor acceleration of the Sportage EX. More than 9 seconds to go from zero to 60. That's my neighbor's main complaint with his. Makes passing other vehicles difficult. He even added "and going uphill, too." because we live in the mountains.
Perhaps the hybrid would be better, being that it has more HP.
That's a very nice tree stump imitation you're doing in the thumbnail.
Thank you for the recognition!
You’ve won the internet today, sir.
Great review for the Sportage Hybrid. Does Kia have mid-cycle upgrade for the 2025 model year? Thanks
I'd speculate that they would, but I say that because they often change things up after just 2 model years, not because I've heard it from a reliable source.
@@Realistick Thanks for your quick reply. I’d like to see them update the exterior a little bit. It looks a little weird to me. Lol.
@@Realistick how do you feel driving the hybrid?
No problem! I liked the hybrid, great response, natural power delivery with the six speed and smooth braking. I trust the toyota setup more, and in the real world, the RAV4 hybrid gets better mileage (with awd), but I prefer driving the Kia.
We just decided to buy a Sportage Hybrid EX AWD. Comeing from a 3 year old Buick Envision. The Kia doesn't feel as 'planted' to the ground as our Buick (feels higher up, less car-like handing), and the Hybrid I'm not used to. I also worry bit about the hvac/radio controlls you mentioned, but I think with a couple weeks of driving I'll get used to it. We looked at another Chevy, a CX-50, and a couple others but we have had good experience with Kia in the past, our local dealership is pretty good, and with the price/size of this vehicle, we think it our best choice. Supposed to arrive at the dealership in a couple of weeks.
I like it because I have it, the expensive European shorter version 😅. Thanks 😀
i LOVE the daytime light design.
I test drove the Sportage today. Blinding rage indeed 😂. It's not only incredibly annoying but dangerous, considering how many times I took my eyes off the road to adjust the radio temperature.
Rear seat floor mat too big and doesn't properly fit.
Compare the Rav4 limited hybrid to the SX Prestige hybrid. Kia is over $5k cheaper.
The rear seat floor mat is too big. Manufacturing defect.
Bloomington!?!?!?OKAY….,I’m from LaPorte IN,my brother live down there lol
Let's see....the proven reliability of the Toyota hybrid system, more real knobs and buttons, high resale value and lower depreciation vs Korean products, now that's an easy decision.
"that's an easy decision" - You can decide all you want, as long as you do not actually intend to buy one. Availability on Toyotas is miserable. In my area you can't even go to a dealer and order the Sienna because they have no allocation. I've driven Toyotas for decades, and the cluster that Toyota is going through with the supply chain is giving me a pause for the future.
@@mountainhobo Then I'd search outside of my area, if I were considering a new vehicle.
But new is always such a bad financial decision that I would buy used. No need to even consider that since my almost 26 yo Lexus is still perfect.
If you intend to drive two or three cars in your whole life then Toyota is not a bad choice
@@jeju_trophycollector True. I once experienced having a man look wistfully at my Lexus as he was trying desperately to unload his Bentley by James Young.
@@wholeNwonused cars here cost almost the same as new. With warranties being offered for Kias it would be really stupid to buy used. I love Toyotas but they're not that cheap anymore.
IT WOULD BE NICE IF U SHOW US THE ENGINE BAY OF EVERY VEHICLE U REVIEW , believe it will sky rocket 🚀 ur views!☝🏼👍🏼
I'll never buy a KIA/Hyundai after the way they treated their customers after the KIA Boys theft fiasco. Terrible company.
on the flip side these vehicles have become incredibly economical because of their PR backfire. They're more affordable than toyotas right now, one of the only brands that aren't selling above MSRP, and they are the only brand I can find that is even offering a 10yr/100k warranty.
@@sirnuggets9666 I also profited from bad image and bought sportage at a fair price. Hell when Kanye west went crazy, I was looking for Yeezy shoes to buy since they went on sale.
@@sirnuggets9666I just bought a 2024 EX for $1K below sticker. No market adjustments and other BS. Nice car.
That is not a compact crossover, as on quality is 1 step above the rav4
I kinda like the styling of the Sportage. It’s different enough to stand out, but still understated and handsome from some angles. But my reluctance to buy one of these would be the fact that Kia seems to be more “revolutionary” than “evolutionary” with their design styling in the past few years and I’d be afraid that whenever a refresh or a redo of this comes along in a couple of years, this one will be left looking and feeling “old”. I’ve typically been a VW, MINI, and Subaru owner in the past and those brands all have mostly taken an “evolutionary” approach to updates. Hyundai/Kia….not so much.
I swear, I blink and their cars shapeshift
VW has horrible record , expensive to own ...many problems ...don't let bias blind you .
All cars look "old" after a couple of years. I'm not sure I understand your point.
I cannot see the old 20-23 Sonata DRL 😂
those roads are a please to drive tho😅 7:59
"It looks attractive" -- That is Hyundai/Kia's strategy in a nutshell. Utility, practicality and reliability all take a back seat. That philosophy is also why they're doing so well. Sadly, Americans are obsessed with appearances and shop accordingly. Then whine and cry later when their pretty new car turns out to be a polished turd.
Id definitely say longevity takes a backseat (I talk about it in the video), however, to say their strategy is to woo people with looks downplays how great the car is to drive for the segment, how versatile it is and the high levels of comfort. They sell well for several reasons, even if that reason isn’t Toyota reliability.
All the Toyota fangirls will say “Toyota has nothing to worry about. They’re so reliable that you can burn it with fire and it will still run”🤣
More or less
The older Toyota probably, but they are putting more standard electronics in their vehicles to stay competitive.
I have a Rav4 and a Sportage Hybrid.
I always choose the Sportage.
I honestly can't complain about either
I know people like to dump on KIA. It's a great ride and it's perfect for my needs.
The good guys were more charitable than me with the Kia. I’ve tried and not impressed one iota.
Recall already for dual clutch , retains king of the recall moniker.....WHOOPS !
2024 Sportage doesn't have a DCT!
Actually Ford still has way more recalls mostly with their F series trucks.
Yes you are right , I stand corrected....Hyundai / Kia close second ...I should have said in the Suv class .@@brokeboy87
Bottom line it’s still a Kia…comes standard with subpar customer satisfaction, mediocre reliability and average at best dealer experience.
Again, must be a regional thing. We drive a lot so between my wife we buy a car every other year. In the past 2 decades, a couple Kias, a Chevy, a Buick, a couple mazdas, and a Honda. I have no problem with the Kia's or the dealer experience. In fact, when considering how long it takes to get service done, the number of problems, and the buying/negotiating process, our local Kia Dealer is probably the best of all the other dealers we deal with (Chevy, Buick, Honda and Mazda recently)
😎 algorithms?
Direct injection + turbo + hybrid = disaster waiting to happen.
Just ask any auto mechanic...
So why is Toyota going with this? 😂
I have a Corolla Cross with 2.0 gas engine non hybrid. I use extreme driving style (hyper milling and cruise around 80 km/h) to extract the best mileage. So far my best try was 4.167L/100km, which is about 56 MPG. My overall MPG after 8000km of driving is 46.94.( 5.0L/100km)
