I THOUGHT I'D NEVER FINISH THIS VIDEO. I started it a month ago, but god that kind of video is a nightmare to make. Initially i wanted to make a sherlock character study, then a john character study, then a john/sherlock relationship study and i went HELL LET'S DO ALL OF IT IN ONE VIDEO. Which explains why it's so long. And it could have been even longer, i had like AT LEAST one minute more of voiceovers but i had to cut many because a. i couldn't find a music long enough (trivial reason) and b. honestly i would have gone nuts.
Sooooo. This is META. at least it tries to be. Inspired by a few things i've read on tumblr but also and mostly my own take on the characters and their relationship. it might be slighly johnlock oriented in the end because let's be honest here this ship is almost canon.
where to begin. well i'm not going to explain every choice i made about the voiceovers and the scenes i associated them with, i think you'll get most of it. But in the big lines, it about how john is an adrenaline junkie who doesn't deal very well with that fact, how sherlock is bursting with feelings and hide it behind the high functionning sociopath facade, and about their oh so complicated relationship. John DOESN'T SEE how much sherlock cares about him ('i don't understand' NO YOU DON'T INDEED AND SHOULD DEFINITELY HAVE THAT ON A T SHIRT) and sherlock is so closed off, how could john get that sherlock is pretending not to care WHEN SHERLOCK CAN'T ADMIT THAT SAME FACT TO HIMSELF. I mean the 'love declarations' in the sign of three were lovely but there's so much left unsaid. All the hurt, all the pain, the betrayal, the misunderstandings, it's still kept silent. Their friendship brings out the best of each other but also the worst but they don't talk about that. no. never. THEY HAVE THE BIGGEST COMMUNICATION ISSUE EVER. I SWEAR IT SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING I TREMENDUOUSLY ENJOY AS THE EMOTIONNAL MASOCHIST THAT I AM.
Also i put a bit of johnlock in the end because guys. GUYS. You might not ship it, i'm not sure i do myself (probably not)(idk) but the show has taken a step further in the eternal ambiguity stuff. what sherlock feels about john is out of control, that's called love. And john loves mary but c o m e o n. 'she wasn't supposed to be like THAT', 'THAT' MEANING LIKE SHERLOCK BECAUSE JOHN WATSON IS DONE WITH THIS SHIT but sorry john you haven't moved on at all even if you really tried hard.
i chose to use mary essentially to show that she's, to put it simply, a female version of sherlock. Careful, NOT a substitute. When sherlock says 'you chose her', i know a lot of people think he says 'you chose her over me' but imo he says 'you chose her because she's like me', not in the way 'she's a lesser me', absolutely not (he's a dick but not THAT much), but in the way 'despite the hurt you need someone like us, i was gone and she took over.' And if IS indeed john's fault ! He doesn't consciously put himself in situations where he'll be hurt because of the people he chooses to surround himself with, but inconsciously it's ultimately his decisions. That guy really needs to resolve some issues about his inner self. He's so lost...
sherlock is actually finding himself i think. At great cost. He was right, alone was protecting him. When one has spent their life repressing all kind of feelings, when it breaks out it's in a destructive explosion...for oneself and everybody too close. also that poor man thinks he's just 'useful' to john, which is true in a way, but not only obviously. He doesn't see himself as worthy of love... well it's not even about worth, it's just that he spent his life not even considering he could be loved. i mean the mind palace is the proof of it. What can be found there ? data, reason, logic, caged madness... but the small part of it that represents love is slipping away from him. if you want to read my analysis of sherlock holmes i invite you to visit my 'sherlock holmes' tag on tumblr, i write a lot of shit in the tags.

"Why is everything always my fault?" I love the passion with which he says that. It reminds me of the frustration when you can't ever seem to win any arguments and people are always blaming you for things.
i don't know about you guys but if i were a someone like sherlock and i found a john in my life..
i swear i would fall in love with that person and marry them.

Sherlock realised three things in this moment that he killed Magnus to protect John: 1 he might have more feelings for John than he thought 2 he will do any and everything to protect John and 3 he is going to die and he will never be able to see or even talk to John ever again and that he would go to his grave with whatever feelings he may have towards his best friend

Probably-there are so many things I should watch, the classic Who episodes and Game of Thrones are top of the list-but I'm terrible at finding time to watch stuff like you DON'T EVEN KNOW… 9 eps take me three weeks on a good period, these days it would be what, two or three months? Too many hobbies… =P
You have completely broken my heart. I mean that in the best possible way.
This is so intense it hurts. I'm not english-speaking, so I can't fully understand all the voiceovers from the scenes, but the way you edited and put together all the clips makes the message pretty clear, in a way. I loved your description and mostly agree with your take on the characters and their relationship. Maybe I'm attracted to all messed up characters and messed up relationships/bromances (BTW, about communications issues, I would like to introduce you to two VERY messed up brothers I know all too well), so that's why I love these two to pieces, and Sherlock (this version at least) is one of my favourite characters now on tv.

You are wrong. Maybe you are not writing about Sherlock but yourself.
He doesn't deny love, he only keeps in mind its disadvantages.
He love and care John, Molly, Mrs. Hudson, and He is lovely exited about The Woman because he can be himself with her without hurting her feelings.
Sherlock are aware of his feelings, but he can control his responses because of those feelings. The others don't.
You write about the mind palace, you must write about Sherlock's mind/brains. Every feeling born in the brain, every feeling are processed in the brain, every pain... If someone have a brain, have emotions, have feelings, if someone have a brain can suffer too; Sherlock isn't rationality and pragmatism only.
In fact those kind of people usually have extreme emotions compared with common people.
You think he doesn't feel he is loveable? Well, he knows he doesn't be likeable for most common people because common people doesn't want to know the truth and he is always looking for the truth. Normal people can't handle the truth, so they can't handle and like Sherlock. Normal people believe in gods, in the paranormal, in mysticism, and they wouldn't like someone like Sherlock debunked their dogmas, so they repel him. And he knows and accept it.
Sherlock knows how love works, he knows about oxytocin and serotonin, but he never, ever denied love. He just understand it.
maybe i'm talking about myself but i think you're talking about yourself too ;) which is fine, we should relate to the characters we love. it's been stated several times that sherlock has decided to repress and even supress feelings in order to be better at brain work, in canon and by the writers themselves. you talk about sherlock as someone who's quite balanced but s3 and tab were clear enough : he's not. 'pure reason toppled by sheer drama'. his brother has taught him that caring is not an advantage and sherlock believes it, be it true or not. i could use dozens of quotes from the show to prove my point but everyone has its own reading of it and that's ok.
i'm NOT wrong, that's just my take on the character and you have the right to disagree. you're not right or wrong either. actually our opinions are pretty similar except you think sherlock is at peace with his feelings/emotions, and i don't. (i really think the show is with me here though...) anyway i don't want to start a debate, let's agree to disagree!

well thanks for the compliment ;) and the "you're wrong" worked ! though i probably would have answered anyway, because i think your reading is interesting. i don't want to start a debate because i don't believe it's the place, and because neither of us will change our minds.
but maybe there's a misunderstanding because i don't think sherlock feels gulty for being who he is, i'm just saying that he doesn't know how to deal with feelings, because he's pretended for a long time that he didn't care. i'm reaching when i say he feels like he's not worthy of love, but we know he's not fond of himself and doesn't expect to be liked. he's ok with it yeah, but not always, and maybe deep down he's not ok with it at all (see the abominable bride). but again, this is a matter of interpretation i guess. sherlock is a complex character and it's amazing that everyone can see something different in him.

Well, Sherlock calls himself "high-functioning sociopath". I don’t know if he is convinced that he is one, because he is not. But at least he seems to be aware of how others see him, aware of what could be "wrong" with him. And in the same way I think that he is aware of many other things such the others feelings and of his own, but sometimes taking care (too much care)of them, prevents us from acting under the so called “ought to be”.
Maybe he knows how to deal with feelings, but maybe he just doesn’t have the right answers each time, he is a human after all.
He is a human after all.., remember the violin song for The Woman, remember when he shot Charles, and remember when his brother said that in the beginning Sherlock want to be a pirate?
..But in the end, he is only a fiction/al character, and we are not!
