#bobmarley #reggae #behindthemusic
Today, Bob Marley’s legacy is inescapable. First of all, most of his descendants are talented and successful musicians themselves. His Tuff Gong Recording Studio is still thriving and hundreds of thousands visit the various Bob Marley pilgrimage sites throughout Jamaica each year. Heck, Marley is a big reason why tourism continues to be an important industry there. Rita Marley has especially continued to preserve Bob’s legacy. The Wailers also continued after Bob’s death in various forms.
Bob Marley is who most people automatically think of when they think of the entire genre of reggae music. But Marley is not only the best-selling reggae artist of all time. He’s one of the best-selling ARTISTS of all time. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Bob wasn’t like most pop musicians. He was spiritual. He was reflective. He was extremely generous. According to the historian Roger Steffens, he regularly donated money to at least 6,000 people every month. He never owned a house, yet bought many houses for other people. Bob’s music is unique in that it is political yet unifying. He used his music as a tool for social activism and as a global ambassador for both Jamaica and all African nations. Yet his music became just as popular with the rest of the world. Today, you’re just as likely to hear his music played at an American college fraternity party as you are at a party in Kenya. More than anything, his music is just uplifting. It just makes you feel good.
While Marley is easily one of the most influential musicians in history, his influence extends far beyond his music. He remains a symbol of Jamaican and African pride, social justice, and spiritual consciousness. And he continues to inspire new generations of fans around the world.

No More Trouble (Jamaican extended version) or Pass It On.
But you gotta pick one! :) @@nathanielcruz8872
@@mattbeatgoeson ohh dang… One love it’s so catchy!
As a Jamaican I’m sooooo happy you made this video
REPRESENT. I love your country. I went there back in 2008 and everyone was so ridiculously nice to us.
Am from Saudi Arabia I have known Bob since 1982 when I was 16 years old and still in love with Bob's music
Ridiculously!❤
Didn’t Bob Marley die in 1981?
Bob Marley is our family icon, altho The Beatles is my favorite band, I grew op on his music. Bob Marley liked the Beatles and bought their records like everybody, and all 4 Beatles liked Reggae (in particular Bob Marley and The Wailers). Bob and George even met in 1975! Both bands represented peace and love and so do I!
No doubt John Lennon always said he loved Bob Marley music
Would have loved to see the Beatles try some reggae tracks.
@@JaemanEdwards Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (Paul), C Moon (Paul/Linda), Seaside Woman (Linda/Paul), Don't Be Scared (Yoko/John), How Many People (Paul), White Christmas (Ringo)
@@Meneervdberg Ob La Di is not a reggae song. Never heard the others but I guarantee they are not reggae songs. Typical of fans of this channel to not know what reggae really is.
@@JaemanEdwards You should because it is reggae influenced music! And I agree that Obladioblada is not reggae but Ska influenced but give the other songs a listen (if you aren't ignorant).
Bob Marley was only 36 when he died, yet he left behind quite a legacy. Both he and his wife Rita had extramarital affairs, yet the marriage was apparently stable.
I think Michael Jackson left a much bigger legacy
Stable?
@@noname-nobody1247no he didn't
@@MarcNkenguehe definitely did wtf lol
Has the polyamory community claimed Bob & Rita Marley as leaders in challenging norms about monogamy?
I’ll always wish he got more traditional cancer treatments. Maybe we still could have had him in this world.
He was way too young and he was doing such good in the world.
RIP. Your presence is still with us.
He was seen as a threat to the Big Govt Bigots of the World, he was assassinated
I like Bob Marley clips. This was one of the most coherent & linear vids I've seen. I REALLY appreciate the narration not sounding computerized.
Thanks for watching!
He had one love, and that love is for everyone
Well put
As a Jamaican this was well put together 🇯🇲
He always brought good vibes with his songs :D
Nice video bro comming from a real Jamaican Rastaman, well done sir , nuff respect
One of the best compilation of history on the Legendary Bob Marley. Love his Confrontation recording the best 👌 🇯🇲🎵🎵
Confrontation compiled Brilliantly 👏
Maybe I’m trippin but I can’t get over Bunny putting a curse on that guy and killing him 😂😂😂
Bro someone died that ain’t funny
In Jamaica people really do that shit it trust me when I tell you it IS REAL. I'm a normal logically guy like anyone else but living in a Jamaican household and seeing it for yourself hearing the stories bruh is different its hard to not believe in spells and curses.
@@Six-bw3ir I’m Haitian bro. I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’m involved with it myself. I just don’t see that often. Most of the work I see done is agricultural and herbal.
I have to commend you for making this video it had details, Especially in his early life that I’ve never heard before
I'm glad you learned new stuff from it!
I think you are able to express and show the impact of the artist you cover really well. I really like these videos. I like learning trivia and in video form makes this great for my zoomed ass. Much love for you and Bob himself
"Zoomed ass" 😄 but seriously thank you
I meant say zoomer lol
I like the change in the video titles, I noticed this change a few days ago on all your videos and I belive it suits it best
Glad you think so! I've already noticed a slight bump in views because of it. Hopefully this trend continues. :)
Jamaican American here. Bob Marley gives me great pride🇯🇲!
Me too. He was so great. I also really treasure my vacation to Jamaica 15 years ago.
Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians this world has every seen.
Heck yeah he is
I like the new titles more now, the “How ____ Changes Music” rather than the old “A Brief History of ___” The new one is more grabbing and tbh, I probably wouldn’t have watched this if it wasn’t for the title change
I'm not a huge fan of his music, but no one can deny how important he was
But it's so good 😀
@@mattbeatgoeson Artistically, I know it is beautiful. But it's just not my vibe!
@@soundofhistory_ Bro listen to the groovier songs. Or the Live! album. The music itself is divine. Trust me
There may be a lack of rhythm in your genes bro. And I don't mean it in a bad way.
How can one not appreciate this type of African rooted music. Even my 2yr old grandson dance with glee when he hears the music.
@@anthonynattoo1935 I definitely have no rhythm. Not afraid to admit that
I just found out that you have a music channel and I have to say that it is really interesting and fun to see Mr Beat videos on music lol. Love you Beat ❤
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for the kind words. 😊
Great video as always. Do one about Fela Kuti!
Yes please. Another iconic genius with political lyrics. Fela kuti had no bad songs. So underrated in the music world. I guess having songs that average 15 minutes long is just too much for your average person.
This was an absolutely incredible watch! Thank you so much for the time, effort and care put into one of my country's unofficial heroes. As cliché as it sounds, Bob is an incredible influence in my life as a Jamaican. I'm not rastafarian but so much of his spiritual beliefs ring true to me. One Love and God bless!
This was beautifully done 🇯🇲
Another banger episode🔥
Thank you!
Please do this on The Who next 🙏 I love these videos.
Yo I was thinking of asking for this since the Bob Marley documentary movie came out!
I have yet to see it!
@@mattbeatgoeson Same here! I really wanna see it since my father helped me grow up on Bob Marley and The Wailers!
The 2011 ‘Marley’ is the Holy Grail of full length Bob Docs but the current ‘One Love’ is terrific spanning the 2 years it chose late 70’s
I always look forward to your uploads, they're really high quality and informative. Well done!
I love this channel. I love the recent name change too to “how blank changed music”. Please keep this up! Love the content❤
amazing video thanks bro
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
amazing video thanks for sharing information long live to bob marley's legacy
well done. written like a true fan and a passionate journalist. Words don't really come close sometimes, in describing how numerous and incredibly diverse his fan base is. From dead-heads, to american skins, hip-hop only kind of fans, to punks, hippies, skaters/ surfers, business men, college bros, retired moms, teen girls, etc... Bob touched everyone, and is kind of his own universal language. Its incredible, seeing how many he touched. His music is vital, and unifying. We're lucky to have had him.
thank you
thanks for the video
Great video … absolutely amazing !!!
This was wonderful ❤one of the best stories from birth to dearth. Great job 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 seeeeeeen! Rastafari!
Fyah video mon🔥🍃
Much respect, thank you
🙏🌺🌳🌞🏖Beautiful well said well, put together video clip of Bob Marley. I am a Jamaican from in the 70s. To know this is one of the more accbrett the picture an historical gathering of the life of. Bob Marley, I wish you were the one who wrote the movie script for the 1 love by a pic because they tell a lot of lies in that biopic but it was excellent acting the actors and actress did a good job. Keep up the good work. Nice video clip very nice.❤🎉🎉❤❤🤔🤔🤔
amazing video. thanks bro really thanks for sharing bob's history (who's a new musician for me) i'm really appreciating both the music and bob's legacy in the world. long live reagge long live bob marley's legacy long live world peace and love. so far my favorite bob's song is three little birds
I know you probably get requests all the time but it would be super cool if you did a video about Van Halen
I love Van Halen so much
Please do deep purple, pretty please😢@@mattbeatgoeson
I was definitely not expecting to hear my boy Mr Beat when I clicked on this vid lmao! Channel name is goated
haha thanks so much buddy
Thank you. ❤ for this lovey clip 😅
A well done summary of the legend Robert Nesta Marley, aka Bob/Gang. The catalyst of change, both locally, and globally!
"Yardi fi Life"
amazing to discover new musicians and their stories (new for me) it's been a great experience discovering bob's discography
I additionally love to REDISCOVER all of these artists. It makes me feel like a kid again.
One Love has been used as Jamaicas tourism advertising song since 1994
When I went to Jamaica in 2008 I remember it being played everywhere
Great track! 🔥
It is quite obvious that your fine retelling of Bob's story is taken directly from my book, "So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley" from W. W. Norton. It has just been reissued with a quote on the cover from the headline of Rolling Stone's review: "This Might Be the Best Bob Marley Book Ever." It is available in English, Dutch, French, Spanish and, the first time ever for a Marley book, in Chinese. Nice work, my brother. - Roger Steffens
powerful presentation
18:59 hey! thats the jacksons!
How can this 25min video be so much better than bobs movie. Great video dude
Good job man
Thank you!
Very well done. Big up yuhself!
Amazing video learned so much.
Thank you!
It’s a great day when you post a new video.
That means a lot. Thanks for watching my stuff. :)
41 Years that was a long lasting compilation album (Legend)
Awesome video!
Please do one of these on Genesis! Such an interesting story of a band. Really enjoy your videos!
Thank you and great suggestion!
Fist time I ever heard of Bob Marley was when I watched the I Am Legend movie. When Will Smith talks about the only album you'll ever need is the Legendary (Bob Marley and the Wailing Wailers) Album. That same week I found the album at Walmart and just had to buy it. To say the least it is one of the best greatest hits album I've ever come across been a huge fan ever since🦁🇯🇲🧡💚❤️
Great video full of Did you know facts.
“Is this love” is my favorite Bob Marley
Great video...
That was the best Bob Marly Documentary ever
Please do a video on on how David Bowie changed music not a lot of people understand that David Bowie is the important artist than Micheal Jackson and the Beatles
Yeah, Bowie is singlehandedly more responsible for "alternative music" being a thing more than arguably anyone else in history.
7:00. Although Tuff Gong was his nickname, it wasnt given because he was saying that it was tough to make it in the music business, he was given the nickname because when he was a kid, the teasing that he experienced for being mixed race got too much that he started to dish out those fists and its said that he won most of those fights.
Yeah
Leanard Howell is the original Gong. Along with 3 other men Leanard Howell the most prominent is the founder of Rastafari.. Bob Marley used the name Gong in respect of Leanard Howell, as well as being able to fight.
Thanks for details ....good
Very good vid
Please do Stevie. Maybe even Motown cause they produced so many icons
Awesome video. Congrats! One suggestion if I may: How Fela Kuti changed music.
Very informative video,I'm realizing that I enjoy his music most of which was a commercial successful after his death and used in TV's and movies
Awesome video, I love it! I would also love to see a video on The Beach Boys!
I really love the videos keep it up🙌🏾. Please can you do an elvis video or have you done?…please of you haven’t I will love to see 🙌🏾
Don’t forget the wailers and I-3
This was throughly done
Fantastic video… it filled in the ga-s that movie left out. See the movie n watch this too
This video is more true to Bob Marley than the movie that was released not too long ago....that the Marley family approved.
Great Video, no lies detected.
Bunny actually called him Robbie as did most people at the time. Also Winston is Peter's middle name. Peter Winston Macintosh, Peter's Tosh for short.
I don't think people understand how insanely dangerous political strife was/is in Jamaica. Marley getting two political rivals to unite on stage was a huge deal.
Another great video man. Keep it up, it's great and entertaining.
Can you do Pearl Jam next?
Poet and a Prophet. R.I.P. Robert Nesta Marley.❤
Informative video. I'm so glad that Delaware did not work out for Bob. He returned to Jamaica and the rest is music history.
You should do Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Who or Pearl Jam next. Absolutely love your videos by the way
The Bong 🤙🏻
I firmly believe that Bob Marley is the most recognisable face in the entire world. More than Jesus himself (due to differing cultural ideas of what he looks like)
This heading to million views within 6 months
Cool video, I’m slowly getting into reggae. All Started when my dad’s friend gave me a Specials CD. Please please please do The Pogues on this series.
To your point; since being subscribed for around a month or so, this is the very first video I’ve watched on this channel. Other videos here do interest me but I watch a lot of stuff, but this? This was Bob Marley. Went right ahead and watched it yet I only even vaguely know some of his songs. I’m inspired to go give them a full listen now
Thanks man. I appreciate it a so much.
@@mattbeatgoesonno Mr. Beat! Thank you I am obsessed, I needed this music a lot right now, he really is an incredible artist.
@@mattbeatgoeson and you an incredible CZcamsr of course! I’ve watched a severe amount of your videos and I appreciate your content and the learning you’ve allowed me to continue even after my high school and associates. I was unsure how to appreciate your reply but you deserve all the praise for your content 🙌🏼 and once more I say; you’ve shown this stoner Bob Marley when he needed him most, thank you Mr Beat.
Bob Marley The Artist of The Century 🐐
BOB lived his best life all his adult years.
May he rest well 🙏🏿
Yo Mr. Beat. I'm not sure if you remember me, but a while ago I made comment suggesting a video about Green Day or Blur. What I didn't know at the time is that you make music history videos about bands/artists who are no longer active. So, armed with this newfound knowledge, may I suggest a video about Van Halen?
can you do the evolution of metallica next please
Didn’t know you had a music channel bro, been a fan through multiple CZcams accounts, hop you make a video on my band, two and a half white dudes, one day
Another great video as always, i would love to see a Billy Joel video.
And his grandson just realeased a song "praise jah in the moonlight" and that shiii firreeeeeee
Some great musicians really changed the music in Jamaica. They were in bands like Skatalites, Supersonics and Sound Dimension. Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo and Lynn Taitt are only a few of those musicians. They created Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae. They are the underrated heroes of Jamaican music.
Honestly i know he's not as well known outside of Nigeria but it'd be cool to see one of these of Fela Kuti
I love your videos on the band that started so we could understand how they came up I was going to ask you can you do guns n' roses thanks man
Can you do an AC/DC episode? I love your videos, they’re awesome!
Would love to see a video on swans keep up the great work 👍
Natural Mystic.
please do john denver next ! been getting into his music agian
I love this vid! Is it possible to do one for the great Tiken Jah Fakoly??
