Johnny Cash is considered not just one of the greatest country singer-songwriters of all time, but one of the best singer-songwriters of all time…period. He’s also one of the best-selling musicians of all time, selling more than 90 million records worldwide. He performed at least 1500 songs in his career…hundreds of those songs he wrote himself. According to my calculations, he released at least 97 albums. Now you can see why I didn’t list them all.
Much of his music was about hardship, about the trials and tribulations that everyday folks go through. Despite the dark and sad themes of many of his songs, people often forget that he also knew how to be silly. Some of his biggest songs are quite lighthearted and make you smile. Thanks to his backing bands over the decades, Johnny developed an incredibly unique sound that combined multiple genres, including but not limited to country, gospel, folk, blues, rockabilly, and even rock and roll. Despite being a crossover artist, he particularly helped bring country music into the mainstream. He was, after all, a big reason why I first got into country.
There’s a reason why we often first recall those free prison concerts when we think of Johnny Cash today. That’s because his biggest appeal came from the fact that he never stopped being a champion for the downtrodden, for the forgotten in society. He was one of us.

I'm very impressed that you mentioned Bruce Springsteen as a contributor to the Johnny 99 album (writer of Johnny 99 and Highway Patrolman). A little known fact, I suspect. To be honest, I'm not a big country music fan, but I really like Johnny Cash and as a child of the 90s I remember hearing the American Recordings quite regularly on 89X the alternative rock station in Detroit. Another thing that I remember hearing quite a bit was Social Distortion's cover of Ring of Fire, which I can't help but wonder if that help convince him to work with Rick Rubin in the first place.

Someday I think I might wash them but something inside me keeps saying not yet, not yet, not yet.” So interesting to hear the real origins of his choice in costume given that my favourite song by him is “Man in Black”. She Used to Love Me A lot is one of the best songs he did and his vocals bettered the version by Dave Allan Coe.
Also I feel missing out that moment where he went into a cave to die was a big boo boo seeing how much it turned his life around.

Yeah, I really did cut some stuff out there. He just had so many albums already, but you're right- that one had some great tunes on it. Regarding the cave story, I didn't include it because the story was likely either heavily embellished by Johnny and his friends and family or perhaps even made up entirely. I used to think the story was true until I read some biographies about him. Check out the sources in the description by the way! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. It's obvious you're a true fan. :)

Have always been a Johnny Cash fan (only country artist that I can listen to for more than one song). The albums he did with Rubin to me are the best he did. Covers are hard for me to usually like but OMG, he did some AMAZING ones (Rusty Cage, Hurt, Solitary Man among the best).

You implied June didn't write Ring of Fire, when it's a well known fact that she collaborated with Merle Kilgore, and her sister Anita was the first person to record it in 1962 , June wrote a number of songs and it is often been said that she helped him at his lowest ebb 😎
