  • This video tutorial shows you the easy way how to make a perfect inlay with a CNC router... how to do wood inlay projects with your CNC router. This step-by-step CNC woodworking inlay tutorial guides you how to design inlays, to writing gcode files, to set up a CNC router for inlays, to finishing the wood inlay project. You will learn what are the best router bits for inlays. If you've been looking to learn how to CNC woodworking inlay projects, this is the best CNC router inlay video.
    This inlay tutorial uses Vectric Vcarve desktop but is good for vcarve pro and vectric Aspire, as well. The methods used in this CNC router inlay project can be used for most CNC router design woodworking projects software, such as Carveco, Easel, Carbide Create and others.
    You will find creating wood inlays on a CNC router is rather easy when you understand the proper steps to design your inlay.

    I'm used to larger, corded routers czcams.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

    1) If you use the blue tape hold down on a smooth table surface and the workpiece. Apply the CA (super glue) to the back of the tape on the workpiece and the Accelerator on the back of the tape on the table surface. This gives you an extra few seconds for positioning before the accelerator "kicks off" the CA. And, any bleed-through of the CA will be on the back of the work piece (sand it off) rather than your machine table surface. 2) If you are going to use a table saw (as Garrett shows in this Video) PLEASE use a "zero clearance insert" for the throat of the saw. This will keep the scrap from dropping into the saw. 3) Buy a push-stick or carve yourself one to keep all of your fingers the same number and length. I have been woodworking for 40 years and I have too many acquaintances called "3-finger Joe."

      People feel that loving energy. Makes them want it to. And if the product gives you that feeling, the potential customer will want the feeling too. And since it is the created item that generates the feeling, they will buy to have the feeling, just out of association.

  • @jimhatch5873
    @jimhatch5873 Před 2 lety +2

    Nice and clear process. The step-by-step "recipe" is a great approach to get a clean inlay.
    Two hints. First, when you're grabbing the bitmap you're going to use as your pattern, instead of using the snipping tool, right-click the mouse and pick "save image as". That will save the bitmap to wherever you direct it on your PC. Or, click the image and it wall take you to the source of the image. That page will often have download links available and generally a higher resolution than you'll pick up off a "snip". You also will get just the image without any extraneous icons from the Google image search. If there's no direct download button, you can use the right-click technique to save the image. While you're at it, if the image had that checkerboard pattern you noted as making it hard to use, you'll see in the save image as or the click and download, that the checkerboard will go away. That's because the gray checkerboard is usually indicating a transparent background (vs a sold white background). That will expand the options available for you in terms of images out there - you don't need to skip the ones with the transparent background that the snipping tool will include the checkerboard.
    The second tip is for using the CA glue/tape technique for holding the material to the spoil board. Rather than spray the accelerator on the tape you've run the CA glue beads on, spray the tape on the back of the material. The accelerator won't start working until you place the material so you've got more time to work than spraying the glue which starts the setup process immediately. Spraying the tape on the material gives you extra time because accelerator only starts working when it is in contact with the CA glue. This is also where the grid lines you've engraved on the spoil board will help get the material lined up and not have to worry about trying to adjust the position once you hit the glue.

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  Před 2 lety

      Hi jim. Thanks for commenting on those 2 items. I forgot to mention about saving the image. It would save 'fixing' time.

He’s the same dude who will come up to me (a 40 year old woman) at a market and go “YOU did this!?” There is a tone people will use when they don’t understand CNC isn’t just throwing something on a machine. Well done! Going to require a project inlay with my high school students using your method. We usually do laser inlays, but that always leaves a small charcoalized edge/kerf and they are not perfect. Our high school wood shop class has a 4' x 8' ShopSabre CNC with a 10 tool ATC, so no knuckle busting. Thank you for thank time to make this wonderful video. New subscriber here! I'm a complete newbie with lots of woodworking experience and some laser engraving experience. One thing I see people doing is spraying the accelerator on the tape of the workpiece, and then place the workpiece on the glue/tape on the spoilboard. I was also under the impression that to do inlays you would need to use tiny downcut bits, like 1/32. I love your method here with the much more durable v-bit instead. Thanks a bunch for this video and the files! I have a new foxalien 4040-xe coming tomorrow!

    As usual, great work Garrett! Forget using the table saw or a band saw to cut off the waste inlay. Both are just a waste of time and I have seen guys ruin some really nice pieces getting caught in the table saw blade. Just let the surfacing bit take off the waste. It's safer and less steps. I don't remove the female piece from the table once it is cut. I just glue the male piece in and use some old exercise weights to hold it down until the glue sets. Then use a surfacing bit to remove the waste.

The only problem was I selected a 1/2 90° v bit but used a 1/4” v bit on the project. Needless to say the results were not what I was expecting. I decided to remove all tools in the tools database that I don’t have. This should reduce the chance of calculating with a bit I don’t have. As I buy bits I’ll enter them into the datatbase. OKI, inlays are really easy once you understand how they work. Do about 3 of them and you'll see what I mean. Yes, it is definitely a top of the list project to do

    Thank you so much for making this video. Just yesterday I was designing an inlay for a chef friend of mine, my plan is to put his logo into a cutting board using several species of wood for contrast. Your video cleared up so many questions about depth of cut and offsets between male and female pieces. I'm feeling a lot more confident about doing this, buy yeah I'm going to make a couple of your feathers first.
