- I have used many compost toilets in my day and none have them have ever been able to improve upon the 5 gallon bucket method.
We show you our compost toilet system on our off grid homestead in Hawaii and how to manage it.

This was the best instruction video on this subject. Simple, straight to the point and easy to follow. Thank you.
Thanks for that. I have been a part of so many workshops only to leave wondering what the hell I actually learned. Usually there is so much fluff. I want folks to really know how to do stuff.
This is a great video love from Australia 🙂👍
Mahalo
Always thankful for your insightful knowledge!
Thank you
Very informative
Great video
Mahalo
Thanks for sharing. I have watched Offgrid with Doug and Stacy do this as well.
Now there's two of us. Are you next?
Aloha,
Self Sustainable :
recently joined your Homesteadin' Hawaii ....... I'm a new widow looking to use composting toilet system similar to what you spoke about, as well as more organic gardening, have fruit trees, growing more herbs, and being self sufficient, living of the land here on the Big Island. I've subscribed, following, so will be watching your videos for guidance. Mahalo !
I think we chatted already. Thanks for subscribing
So helpful video without any fancy drilling or measuring. very encouraged!! Thanks so much.
I really want to learn what happen to the outdoor pile and how long it takes for you to use it as fertilizer.
People says you should wait for 3months of even 1 year before it perfectly break down, but that always makes me confused cause you have to keep dumping on top of your old pile.
I wait for a year after I put my last load on the pile. It takes a year for us to fill each pallet compost bin so we know to empty the other when the other gets full and vise versa.
Great system. I saw a good system on off grid Hawaii's channel, where they built an outhouse above cinder blocks, and it has a wall you can take down at about 6 months and remove the compost which they put in their orchard. They just used county mulch in theirs, but also had a bucket system they use in their shipping container.
I've heard about people just burying it in the yard because things breakdown so quick around here. I wouldn't recommend it, but I believe it. So many ways to compost poop. As long as it works!
@@HomesteadinHawaii Right. Yeah, I don't think I'd just bury it either, I like the idea of it breaking down first in a compost.
@@HomesteadinHawaii Off Grid Hawaii don't bury it. Instead of using a bucket like you do, they poured a small concrete pad then build a wall around it with cinder blocks. Then they added a wooden lid on top with a hole to do your business through. After it gets full they use a bucket for a while to let it compost down then empty it through blocks in one side that have not been mortared together. They have videos of about how the built it and emptying it on their channel. czcams.com/channels/9K-6hcqTF6iVRgV5J1Fc9A.html
@@frederickjohnh I've seen theirs but it wasn't in the cards to build a completely separate bathroom from the house that needed us to go through the rain to use it. If I designed my house around the idea, maybe, but because our bathroom is connected to the house, that style does not work for us.
@@HomesteadinHawaii True we each need to do what fits best with the lay of the land and our life style.
Mahalo. You make things seem so much less intimidating. :D
No worries. Poop is pure gold!!
the hen likes it there because it's secluded, warmer and there is free food (worms) Win win for her.
Thank you! Any techniques to remove heavy metals? I have read about the buildup of heavy metals in humanure re-use. Thanks!
You are what you eat. Especially your poop. Don't eat food with bad stuff and you won't have humanure with bad stuff in it
Hey Sean, I just recently found your channel love your videos. However, I have so many questions! Was wondering if you have one that explains how you got started, what your background is and kind of your life path to where you are now. My wife and I are interested in possibly moving to Hawaii in the next few years and that, coupled with my interest in growing things that can make the world a healthier place, led me to your channel! Keep up the great work and I hope to meet you someday!
You can try check out my earlier videos. Maybe the one on what it costs to go off grid in Hawaii? Glad you found the channel.
Did not think this was going to be that educational of a video, but really informative. Is coconut coir readily available in the islands? Aside from sawdust is peat better than coir (if it is available - if not moot point.) Thanks again.
Coco coir is not readily available. Almost all the hardware stores have peat and sawdust is possible to come by. There is no local production of coco coir so not much availability
What did you do for draining shower and sinks, etc?
Shower and bathroom sink goes to a simple greywater mulch basin. Kitchen greywater goes through a worm bed then out to a mulch basin
Do you consider coconut coir to be mulch? Would coconut coir attract flies?
Coco coir is more of a potting medium. If you have a way to shred up husks it could be great to use in compost toilets, it's just too expensive to buy.
Just came across your video. How often u change your bucket and don't they give off a smell in the heat x
The bucket gets full every 2 days, emptied into the compost pile once a month
No smell
Thank you for sharing so much great information and experience!
I’ve had good results using a blend of county mulch and biochar in the bucket. The biochar immediately starts to charge up with microbes and with volatile nutrients like ammonia that would otherwise be lost to the air.
I use only one bucket, layered into the pile with lots more mulch and green material, hau or banana leaves.
The resulting compost is premium with the biochar addition and it’s locally sourced in Puna
Great tip! I do need to vary it up a little.
Where does one get biochar on East side BI? Thanks!
Mahalo for this video! Do you get many flies buzzing in poop bucket with this system? Any larva / maggots like when bucket is in use?
If it does not get covered well enough and if you use the wrong material to cover with, youu will get flies. But if you are generous with covering with sawdust or peat moss, you get no bugs and no smell.
@@HomesteadinHawaii
So cover bucket airtight when full and like a week before it’ll get dumped into main humanure pile?
@@SrForthright1 I cover it up when full and wait 2-3 weeks before it gets dumped into the main pile just cause I like to do it all at once.
@@HomesteadinHawaii mahalo
So sounds like it’s covered and airtight and no larva develops 🤙🏼
Can you put ashes in the compost pile ?
Sure. Just don't over do it.
What do you use the human waste compost on?
All my fruit trees
How about the urine Sir? Where did you put it?
Some people separate. I just put it all in the same bucket. No problems, just cover with material
do u think that the peat moss or sawdust works better sir?
I like peat. Flies loved the sawdust. I think it depends on what kind of sawdust though. Cedar probably deters flies better.
@@HomesteadinHawaii that's my problem I use saw dust, watching Joe Jenkins humanure..n wow the flies!
I’m assuming no TP in the composting bucket?
Nope. We put tp in the compost toilet. It totally disappears when composted
Hmm. Thinking about how I would get the wife to buy off on this. lol. I’m assuming you can’t use that compost for the garden.
My wife uses it, as long as I manage it
I use it on trees
