The US ship Canberra that is being commissioned in Australia was designed by Australians and built in Mobile. It is not illegal to tip in Australia. Whoever said that is trying to conflate tipping with bribery. Not a thing. Tipping is a gratuity.

pay staff a decent wage and they dont need tips, but it is still appreciated for exceptional service

Thanks for doing this one. Saw it and thought you might find it interesting.
Voluntary tipping isn't illegal. But it's not expected nor customary. Most you'll see is a tip jar in some places but these days barely anyone uses cash they're becoming pointless. Certainly what is illegal would be paying wait staff etc less than the federal minimum wage and making them survive on tips.

Yeah tipping is not "illegal" ... nor is it "obligatory" like it is in the US. I have tipped, but it has been because I had an exceptional experience with whom I tipped.

G'day Fezz, one thing that you might notice will be that wait staff don't hover, if you need anything you ask them... my pet peeve - constantly being interrupted while I'm trying to eat or have a convo,,,it drives me nuckin' futs... 😉
it's like piss off if I need something I'll friggin ask...😵‍💫

It's certainly not illegal to tip, and you can definitely do so. It's just not typically expected. People should be paid a decent income for doing their job, and your contribution to it should already be in the cost of what you're buying (consider that when comparing prices of things with countries that *do* tip -- and also with countries that don't show taxes on the ticket price of things).

Please excuse my facetiousness in advance… but it never ceases to amaze me when 50 people have to comment the exact same point (here- re tipping not being illegal). Maybe one person could comment on it and the other 49 like in agreement 😂😂😂

Operation Talisman Sabre has happened every second year since 2005. The bulk of its operations will take part in Shoalwater Bay near my home city of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The aforementioned Chinese spy vessel is a usual 'guest' that will hang out in International Waters off the coast of the town of Yeppoon as it normally does.
Later in the month the local economy will receive a sudden boost from the international soldiers.

Tipping is certainly not illegal in Australia although the dealers/croupiers are not permitted to accept tips in most (all?) legal casinos. I'm not sure if this is a state law or just house rules. I will individually tip a great waiter or waitress for good service in cash maybe 5 or 10% in a restaurant. I NEVER tip on a card payment when solicited. I will also suggest a cab driver keep the change if he's been pleasant. These guys have been doing it tough since Uber arrived. 😎

Tipping in Australia, never heard of it being illegal. The coffee shop where I am in New South Wales as a tip jar but it’s not compulsory to leave a tip🤷‍♂️ The states and territories govern themselves and have their own laws so maybe it’s different in other states, I do not know.

Ok tipping in Australia is considered a personal choice. You can tip if you want or you don’t have to tip if you don’t want. My hubby tips at restaurants sometimes if he finds they went above and beyond for us. He doesn’t tip if we had poor service we don’t tip 😂. Or if we can’t afford to tip extra we don’t. But yeah it’s a personal choice. 😂

Tipping is neither illegal nor mandatory. Our wages are high, compared to the US, but also our prices for the food are higher. In most cases we pay extra for condiments, we mostly do not offer free refills. The customer is paying a set price for the food, including taxes and management is paying their workers for doing their job, not the customers subsiding the US's low paid work force. For all service jobs workers are paid an award wage which sets a minimum a worker can be paid per hour for their job. In Australia we think it is strange to give someone extra cash for a job they are being paid to do. Bottomline, if you do get to Oz, tipping is not expected, but if you do tip, not many will argue with you.

Tipping is not a thing in Australia, because the minimum wage here is decent. As of 25th Nov 2022 the National Minimum Wage is AUD 21.38 (USD 14.53) per hour or AUD 812.60 (USD 552.44) per week. The minimum wage in the United States is currently US$ 7.25 per hour. Tipping is unnecessary in Australia.

Don't tip. Australia has a minimun wage ($23.23 p/h). It's not illegal to tip, unless you're dealing with a cop or a judge... But yeah, we don't want tipping culture in Oz.

If China wants something in Australia atm, they do not need to invade or fire a shot. They will buy it at an inflated price and we the Capitalists WILL sell. Just look at real estate as one example. Simples really 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

This has nothing to do with Australia, it's all about the USA (quasi corporation) maintaining a strategic Military foothold in this part of the World. Australia's Military capability is simply being "used" by the USA as it has been post WW2, Australia is nothing more than a subservient underling. The USA has approximately 1,000 Military bases in just about every country throughout the World, somehow i don't think Russia or China as we've been led to believe are the problem!

Yes, let’s withdraw from ANZUS and AUKUS and extend the hand of cordial friendship to China. You are naive. Study the “thoughts” and “wise words” of Xi Jinping … you will get a sense of where he is taking China. It is not the “rise” of China; it is all about the “return” of China. The humiliation of China by the western powers in late 19th/early 20th centuries still burns deep in his psyche.
