The absence of leading black male characters in sci-fi and many other shows is blatant.

A lot of people don't even know that there are Black male writers in Fantasy and Science Fiction...that's how heavily suppressed BM are in the authorship world in general. I would say it even extends to book content creators who only review books written by Black women and don't read/review books written by Black men. It's a definite problem that very few are even talking about

This is true. I just discovered Toni Morrison's book Song of Solomon is sci fiction. Black people have been writing science fiction for a long time. I believe one if the 1st writers are francis e harper.

Thanks for doing this video! I'm glad I followed my instincts and self published my first book, which led to forming my own company. I know that the stories I tell go against the grain of mainstream publishing. Other groups of people don't have the right to determine our future for us, or inject their narratives through sisters to steer us off course. I'm proud to be an independent AfroFuturist!

You're welcome. Had to make this video. The only place we're gonna hear Black male voices in AfroFuturism, Black Fantasy and Black Science fiction is Black-owned independent media platforms. It's the only way we're gonna see a future with us in it that's bright.

I haven't seen many Picture Audio Books lately. Here is a new style short story fantasy book called Odyssey of Nirvana. It's in a Picture Audio Book about pirates trying to find the holy land. czcams.com/video/xYhV7jTH4-Q/video.html

Excellent video. Where can Black writers find black sci-fi readers? I've written a scifi/fantasy book that has a Black female lead. I need reviews before release next month. I'm trying to find my target audience.

I heavily support this point of view. I am a Black heterosexual male who has loved SFF from day one. I am an unpublished author who primarily writes fantasy and I've been querying for about a year and half and a lot of agents want me to send them more pages, but they always say something along the lines of you have a strong voice, the narrative is vast and an intense, but it doesn't "click" with me. I've got a couple of emails like that. I'm starting to think that independent publishing may be a better choice.

Man. They don’t actually want good stories written by black men.

my high school had an afro futurism program, guess the race of the person was in charge of the program, an indian women smh lol. Luke cage was one of the fewest shows that display an masculine black man as of recent times, and they had songs from hip hop greats like Rakim, Krs One, Jadakiss on Luke Cage

Interesting, also Afro Surrealism. They take offense brother to a black man who can write a book a story, create a picture from your imagination of you and your people in the future or a quirky fantastical way of seeing ourselves. Black people have imaginations we dream and daydream.

As of late, I'm have an idea of a "Star Wars" like story in my head. If I decide to turn it into a multi-book series I'll go the Indie way.
America publications are very salty about releasing sci-fi stories written by BM writers- as are many American Whites who can't foresee a Futuristic world with us having a major role in it. Yet another example of the passive racism that still exists in this country along the passive racism in corporate America.
The sad irony is that BM writers have an easier time getting their work released by International publications than the American ones as many of the International ones still publish base on merit, not on rather or it fits a certain narrative.
So in the end, this type of gatekeeping won't stop BM sci-fi writers from creating & finding ways to get his work publish as there's an audience for our stories.
