Small ruminants are significant to the Indian economy and provide a living for two-thirds of the rural population. Goats and sheep are essential livestock animals in India. They play an important role in the livelihood of small and marginal farmers and landless laborers, especially in regions where crop and dairy farming are not economically viable.
