Can Bilstein B6 EDC dampers improve the E92 M3?

- It's no secret that we love the E9x M3, and have long thought that for UK road usage BMW M pretty much nailed the suspension tuning on the Competition Package to the point that we never messed with it.
But as these cars age the dampers are starting to fail, and OEM replacements are pretty pricey. Bilstein make a B6 damper that is EDC compatible - Could it not only repair a failed damper for less money, but also improve the cars excellent road manners?
We fitted a set to our Japan Red KA401 to find out!

Oh bloody hell Evolve, you've had already had my money with a full Carbon plenum and intake, now i have to invest in this once you have perfected it!
Be ready 😜
What a car ! Evolve still evolving the E9X M3 after all these years shows what an amazing car this still is even today.. Imran said it himself at the start of the video it’s one of his favourite places to be 😍👍 keep up the great work guys 👍👍
My favorite place to be is in mine too😂😂
if car still needs to be evolved after all these years it means it’s not such an amazing car 💀
@@QQ-hm4nu even legendary cars evolve as new technology comes along 👍
Wish you guys were in South Africa. We have a huge BMW cult and you guys will do exceptionally well here. Big up for all the videos.
E92 m3 - possibly the best m car ever
It would be great to see a further developed set of the dampers / spring combination!! Thanks for continuing, and reviving new projects for the E9X.
You guys without a shadow of a doubt are becoming the real leaders of all these you tube guys, there are levels and your streets ahead.
Great content. Definitely keep going with the development of this chassis! 👍
The suspension on the E9X M3 from factory is absolutely excellent. Unless there is a problem or has had a reason that it needs new suspension it's just throwing money away IMHO to put after market expensive parts in it. There's no need at all for it. The engineers at BMW are the very best at this and they got it right when they signed off on the E9X.....everything except rod bearings and throttle actuators. Okay maybe some of the interior trim stuff but other than that it's tuned to a "T" as they say and if I have any problems in the future with mine after over 110,000KM's of hard driving and extreme enjoyment I will replace the shocks and struts etc with OEM versions. So killer right out of the box baby! Thanks for the great videos and hard work bringing them to us!
We agree completely the competition pack suspension is superb! But as they age the dampers start to fail and these Bilstein B6 replacements are cheaper than OEM, and we think better.
Well regarded shock absorber technician told me the Bilsteins last longer than a twin tube OEM shock. If that's true I'd go for Bilstein. Definitely agree that the E92 M3 has amazing handling from factory.
E92 looks so sick in red
Love the E92 Content, keep it coming, pretty please.
Great video. Have you guys thought about developing resonated test pipes to reduce rasp for those with louder exhausts/2 pipe mod?
Yes, please develop it. I am keen to find a suitable EDC replacement and make it OEM+
I'd be interested in some Evolve Competition Pack Bilstein EDC Dampers in a few years when mine have leaked/stopped working. Enjoying all your E92 M3 content..... please keep it up!
I would like the ride height to stay the same at the front and rear though.
YES. Develop the kit. I would buy one.
Just picked up my 2nd E92 M3 Competition a year ago (never should've sold the first one) and I think your plan of perfecting the B6 dampers is music to my ears! I actually like the stock ride height but don't want it to go higher with better dampers or lose the EDC controls, so I'm very interested in anything you come up with.
same here. Second m3. Would like a better suspension with compliance.
great project Imran thumbs up
i look forward to see some of these beasts in demeanishing cars in carwow
good luck on the greater projects ahead
Yea, I hope you work with Bilstein to fine tune it. I have the B6 struts pairs with your MSS springs and lowered 5mm around on my 235i and found it to be a huge improvement over stock, but feel it could be a little better in some situations.
A' sincere greeting from here to all the workers in the evolve BMW
Greetings back.
That BMW needs some dry ice CLEANING to complement the whole clean look of that car, that, is very much like EVOLVE...car's popping with those dampers👌
Hey guys love this test as I will move to the EDC Bilstein kit for my Comp Pak e90. I agree with you in that the soft EDC setting needs to be Really Compliant, with setting 2 needing to be a Sport or Fast open road setting and Track to be just that a hard no compromise setup. So why not combine the shocks with the MSS Springs to get ride compliance and ride height ?? I know right now MSS don’t do a spring kit for the E9X range but this is a great opportunity. Keep the shocks as Bilstein meant them to be but use the MSS springs to tune it. Can’t wait for more of this as I am a customer.
Jp
Can't wait for the result with Bilstein. Depending on the outcome it will move into my car :-)
Yes please develop an Oem+ setup!
Very interesting video. Didn't know about these dampers, thought the only option for EDC dampers was the KW DDC kit. I have a M3 with wilder Schrick cams and various other stuff. Have a wonderful varis bonnet with nice vents. Work completed by Roy. Do you do customer springs for an e89 35is? I have the Duke dynamic's wide body kit. I'm not sure but you might of had my car in once, a few years ago.
Awesome E92 M3 video 🇧🇷
It would be interesting, also, to see how the Bilstein B16 or higher ride with MSS springs and maybe, H & R sway bars (with Delrin bushings).
I’d love those with the stock comp springs to sit at the original height - is that something they would work with you to develop?
Complete no brainer brother 👌
Make this with an adjustable sleeved kit and I know the community would want it - me first 😂🙏
That color is so popping, I wanna bite into it!!
I love this car! I had an experience as co driver once! The feeling is amazing! It is not the faster m3 it is not for drag racing or street racing against other cars! But at the end of the day is the happiness and satisfaction of the driver! Wish i could get one, one day! The e92 will be an all time classic as the last n/a m3 and the cost of them will go to the sky!
They are a special car for sure.
I am very happy with the factory EDC ride/handling balance, especially on 18” wheels. 19s and suspension upgrades are unnecessary for a street driven M3. Any marginal increase in performance at the extremes will be offset by harsher ride, and in the case of 19” wheels, greater unsprung weight. For track driven cars obviously coil overs on light 18” wheels are the way to go.
I was looking to pair the B6's with the Eibach Pro's for my E90. I'll probably wait to see your update on the dampers but I've already bought the springs -_-
Please design a spring and edc damper kit with bilstein. I love my edc with my eibach springs and I dont want the car higher or lower as the height is perfect for the backroads and downtown steep inclines.
Have you any experience of b16 damptronic for the M235i? I fitted B4 Damptronic with Eibach springs and after 5k miles comfort setting isn't great over high frequency bumps. But both modes are epic on back roads! Are there options for changing damping curves on B4/B6 F22 damptronic shocks?
Thanks! I wonder if these dampers were developed for comp pack EDC cars or not. The EDC software programming has been changed between standard and CP right ? Maybe you could get what you're looking for by flashing back to non-CP ?
Note the Kool Evolve Billet Aluminium Shift Paddles installed on the E92 M3 steering wheel. Available for the E9X M3, F8X M3/M4, and F3X M-Sport...might fit 1Ms and M2s, as well. I have them on both my BMWs E9X M3 and F30 335i M-Sport.
A man with good taste!
Geez that red and black wheel combo :)
Japan spec has Bilstein EDC from the factory (i.e. ZCP in the US as standard) so these might be the factory ones Bilstein was allowed to sell after a certain period of time. Lowering springs bottom out pretty fast on a track so interested to see if these springs maintain the stroke.
I have the B6 Bilstein Damptronic installed on my e60 M5 matched to the stock springs. It was very hard to find back then. Took me a year plus or so to purchase both front and back due to stock shortage. I have to say that it is slightly stiffer compared to the stock shock absorbers. Yes it sits a bit higher as well. Would love to try it on MSS springs but I don’t think there is any for the M5.
Looking forward to ordering the evolve b6 dampers for my e92 m3.
Imran if you go ahead with Bilstein to adjust their B6 set-up. Would you do the same for the E60 platform? I have been looking for new aftermarket shocks for the E60 M5 myself aswell, and only Bilstein supply a set with EDC support. It is either B6 or B16.
Just got mine recently installed B16s on e90 m3.. the car rides so nicely now and when I engage the edc sport setting I can really feel the difference in the ride
B16 EDC are a great choice!
@@EvolveAutomotive I actually did not realize how much my ride was bad 😄 until i drove with the b16 felt like new
My car is a 2011 and had 108k miles, it was my daily.
In honesty at about 75k the dampers are probably well past their best. Pretty expensive to do back to back testing with new OEM though.
@@EvolveAutomotive I can imagine 😆.. great video none the less! Was great to hear your perspective after a 500 mile drive
Hi Guys, how have you changed the internal set of lights so they light up? They just run the DRL usually.
I would really love to know what you think of a standard Alpina product, like the new B3. With you love for ride balance, handling and a B road, it would be good to know. Great context as ever. David
Would be interested to try one!
Why did you choose the Intrax springs over the Eibach springs?
What is recommended for a stock (non m-sport) suspension E92 335i
I'd like it a bit lower, like 10 mil and a bit stiffer
KW V3's?
Yes! Please develop!
Coming very soon! 🤞🏻
Great video . Road to 100k
When will you be releasing an updated video with the new evolve damptroic shock absorber on a ZCP e92.
Br. Imran, AoA - Hope you're well. Any update on the development with Bilstein?
Excellent addition to the e92
🤩 love it. S65 ftw
The Bilstein B6 Damptronic for EDC is the strut/shock set only, so you have to pair them with lowering springs like the Comp OEM spring or other brands like Swift, Intrax, or H&R. Excited for a custom Evolve Bilstein Kit!!
The Bilstein B16 Damptronic for EDC is the full set of struts/shocks paired with matching lowering springs. Both the ride height and rebound are customizable...beyond the EDC settings. $2000-3200. EDC = $$$$$
B16 EDC are a great setup for someone wanting something more performance focused for sure. We’ve fitted sets before and have been very happy with them.
I wonder what kind of socket is being use at 3:25 it looks super useful!
Can you guys recommend anyone or know someone in Northern Ireland to do rod bearings? I fancy you guys or mr vanos, but I’m sure you understand it’s abit of distance to go and have to wait etc
Is their any good recommendation for just a E93 330
Is it that much better improvement from CP dumpers ? I own CP model and always wondered what is there on the market to improve handling and ride height.
What do you think potential full set may cost?
This is a competition pack, so all improvements are based on that being the starting point.
Unsure of cost currently for our package.
Really looking forward to this. Please can you develop one for E93 as well alongside. It would be nice if you could design some sort of affordable height adjustment in the system that also solve the problem of these cars sitting lower on driver side than the passenger side.
You can do that by adding a thicker pad to the spring seat on one side to correct for it.
Would be same fitment for E93 M3 as per Bilsteins recommendations
Would throw the corner weights off
Sorry Bilal
Oh yeah another Evolve mod to start saving for!
Fan from Haiti
Looks-wise this is still my fav gen M3… one day I will own one 🤞🏻
You definitely should, I have been waiting for my m3 8 years and finally I have it
@@SGM_Garage well worth the wait then??
@@retrostu1 certainly yes
Hey, do you think a wavetrac lsd is necessary for an M140i if I don’t plan on tracking it and mainly drive with in sport mode or would you recommend dampers/springs first?
The Wavetrac is great but would probably do springs and dampers first
in the market for a set of dampers and springs now what would you suggest for mostly road use and weekend canyons/autocross use. i do like having the EDC functionality
If you’re in a rush, the setup we fitted in this video is very good. If you can wait, we think what we are developing will be slightly better 😉
Can dampers effect body roll?
That m3 sounds great 👍
Have you guys driven these with a much shorter final drive? I have a 3.64 on my M3 DCT and holy hell does it make a massive difference, so much fun flicking through the gears more
We haven’t but maybe it’s something we should try?
Which did you go with? I have thought about this for my 6mt e93.
Am I right in thinking the difference between comp pack and normal M3's is purely the dampers and springs? So if I was to fit a set of B6 Dampers and Intrax's the same results would be seen on my non Comp E92?
I think so!
Is the exhaust stock, or do you have your test pipes on it? Sounds wicked!
Just an unknown exhaust mod at the moment
I have just installed the Bilstein B6 EDC dampers on a competition pack E92 M3 with standard springs and it rides very high. I’ve got 645mm front and 620mm rear measured the same you have done. It looks like you had 610mm front and 595mm rear. Is this correct? I am trying to achieve standard ride height so want to give the mechanic the correct numbers when fitting new springs.
It’s about 600mm front and yeah 595mm maybe on the rear. After about 500 miles of driving and the Intrax lowering springs.
Bilstein have said the dampers can take about 2000 miles to wear in where they are ‘tight’ from brand new. It’s also worth considering how worn your previous suspension would be and it’s most likely sagged a little also.
My guys got the life, clean garage, even cleaner bmw’s
Yes defo develop further, also how were the stock bearings when they got swapped?
We did a video on the bearings from this car, you can watch it here - czcams.com/video/Ymd_JG4QbGQ/video.html
@@EvolveAutomotive awesome thanks! hadn't put together that it was the same vehicle 👌☺️
@@EvolveAutomotive hey remember this now, Aston did a wonderful voice over for the procedure on this one
What are the normal B6 dampers like with intrax springs? I've replaced all the suspension arms like you have on the high miler and now I'm looking at damper upgrades
Haven’t tried the non EDC B6 but can imagine they’re a good upgrade. The Intrax springs improve the look by lowering the car.
Now we’ve developed our own B6 EDC dampers with custom valving along with MSS height adjustable springs to create our ultimate road setup.
Any updates on the updated shocks set?
Had a few people ask, development is on hold whilst the supply chain problems are around. Hopefully can get a product out next year.
Can you guys make a more comfortable version in EDC one meanwhile, keeping the very harsh sorts of track oriented EDC three setting? I’m looking for what you guys have described but I want to make sure I can enjoy the track and enjoy comfort on the road at the same time, one ideal scenario would be height adjustable springs, and appropriately sized bump stops, but such that I can corner balance the car.
This is basically what we have done
I have a 2011 com pack with 130k. Needless to say it's my baby. The stock damper I'm sure are nearing the end of there life. Please build them and I will buy, I want that perfect 1 finger fender gap on all four corners thankyou
Yes we’d want the front to match the rear and then it’s perfect for us 🙌🏻
Nice
What an Amazing car
have you guys finalized this product to your settings? can i find it on your website?
It's coming very soon!
Has it got more damper range than oem? The oem shock can't handle anything more than 25mm drop in ride height before it's sitting on the bump stops.
Would these bilstein be the same?
These dampers are designed to be used with both OE springs and lowering springs such as MSS.
Are they softer than the original ???
Smooth 👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻🤜🏽
Damn you guys, tomorrow i will exchange my stg2 e92 m3 to an f82 m4, but now i am not sure to make this move. Just love the e92 m3!!
I’m a viewer in the USA and we don’t seem to have access to Intrax springs. Is there an alternative you could recommend like H&R? I actually like the ride height yours came out to be. I currently on Bilstein B16 that is currently nearing its end (slight leak, 70k miles) and want to go back to a more streetable setup as these were a bit harsh on NYC roads.
Our best recommendation is the MSS spring setup, we’re also releasing our own custom tuned variant of the B6 EDC.
We can supply any products shown anywhere in the world’
Thanks! When do you expect to release your variant? Hopefully my current shocks hold up until then.
@@knighriderredux they're currently going through Bilstein's verification process and we hope to have the first sets with us in the coming months.
@@EvolveAutomotive Is it available soon ?? Sound really interesting.
my opinion since i own an e92 suspension should be sporty its a car for track and for daily driving suspension that is soft is great for other vehicles
Damn those roads are tight, you'd never see one like that in north america, we have shoulders you can stop on, basically 1.5 lanes.
Just what we’re used to 🤷🏻♀️
Any chance of a similar custom design for the f8x?
Working on it 👌
What if you use kw sleeve kit with these dampers ?? Ok I know need extra work at front but I think can be done !
Might get the stance you want but typically doesn’t ride that well in our experience. Bilstein spring seat is welded and the damper body might be a different diameter too
@@EvolveAutomotive yes this is true I am working on edc socks we will try to make them stiffer than the oem will sent you photos of the work
Just bought a competition e92 m3, please do a swag custom set up for the edc!!!
Currently testing before finalising production!
@@EvolveAutomotive awesome I can't wait to buy it!!!
So yoir new evolve damptronic shock for the e92 - sku Evo-e9x-damp is specifically designed for ZCP cars and keeps the original ride height?
We have an updated video with our Evolve B6 EDC but yes we have modified the front dampers to sit lower at the front compared to the Bilstein B6.
@@EvolveAutomotive yes - I see one with the F80 platform, is there an updated e92 specific updated review with the new dampeners?
Not yet no, our first stock just arrived!
I have these on my old ZCP springs on my e90 and it definitely has HUGE gap up front. I am debating a set of springs to reduce the gap but don't want to make the ride quality worse. Had you already developed a softer riding EDC damper and set of lowering springs I probably would have bought them so I think there is a market for this as there are not many choices for EDC damper replacement. Now that I already have a set of B6 edc I am unlikely to buy a new modified set. However I might consider a new set of springs but keep in mind Bilstein doesn't recommend going with springs that are too low on the B6 and they suggest a mild spring like Eibach. But hey let me know on bimmerpost if you develop a spring for b6 edc you wanted tested on my e90 m3 zcp...
We are making a set of matching springs soon to give the desired drop with these dampers
@@EvolveAutomotive Any progress on this? My M3 is looking like a monster truck right now sitting B6 with ZCP springs.
@@EvolveAutomotiveIs done?
Which to prefer OE ZCP suspension or the Bilstein B6 dampers ?
In this video we’re comparing the ZCP to Bilstein B6. They’re a vast improvement.

Sucks that the KW adjustable springs dont fit the b6 damptronics☹️
Maybe we can get MSS to develop some
@@EvolveAutomotive i think thats the best idea🤷🏼♀️ that would be one solution for all, no matter what height you want
Hey Imran. Isn't the Bilsten B6 meant for standard springs while the Bilsten B8 is meant for lowering springs? Apparently according to Bilsten, u're not supposed to use shorter springs on the B6 because it is designed to work with springs that don't lower from factory. However, B8 is designed for springs that lower the car. The body of the B6 is longer than the B8 as the length of the shaft is longer and bump stops are meant for standard springs. Correct me if I'm wrong. Was the reason to use B6 because it's the only option by Bilsten which offers an EDC option? I understand B8 does not offer EDC option at all.
We spoke to Bilstein about this and they confirmed that the B6 EDC we have fitted are fine for a mild lowering spring such as what we have used.
@@EvolveAutomotive ok got it! What about Swift springs? Would it be fine with B6 or should I go with B8?
Not familiar with them, so depends how much they lower, and how drastically different they are to OEM spring rates
Imran, which would you choose between an e92 M3 and doing the necessary mods and maintenance or a M2 comp for $60k US? Both would be manual. Both are similar weight, but the M3 has the timeless s65 and hydraulic steering. M2 comp has the torque and tune ability for more, and 6 piston brakes but electric steering. Car would be built for mountain drives, occasional track, occasional daily duties. There may be no one with more experience with these two cars than you! Thanks for all the great content!
Would take OG N55 M2 over M2C if modifying. E92 M3 would probably be the pick over an M2 but very close and depends what you enjoy more. High revving NA V8 or torquey turbo I6. ITB induction sound or turbo sounds.
Try and drive both and choose whichever you prefer. Wouldn't have an S55 M2C purely because of how they sound, and that the N55 with a tune is perfect for the platform.
@@EvolveAutomotive thank you for the reply! Love the channel!
Just wanted to give an update. I test drove the e92 M3 and 2017 m2. Both were amazing. I liked the steering of the M2 more than I thought I would like eps. And it definitely felt more nimble than the m3. But the m3 just feels more special due to that v8. I ended up picking up a 2011 e92 in alpine white with manual, comp pack, and carbon roof. I think f87 M2 values will still depreciate in the future with the bee M2 coming out but the time to get a clean e92 is now or never!

B16 is the correct ones to lower
B16 are coilovers. B6 work absolutely fine with lowering springs. We do the same on the F8X M3 platform.
@@EvolveAutomotive I think that's also because Bilstein did not make a B8 version for the F8x platform. And that's why the only option was the B6? I think they also figured out that for the F8x platform, B8 wasn't necessary. But it was different for the E9x platform as they made a B8 option ? I'm also figuring this out.
