For example lots of people complain that Germany is too soft on crime, but look how rich, safe and free everyone is and how long they live there. it shows that the more advanced a society is, the less severe the punishments get. yeah, you probably support cutting off a hand in your society, but look how many thieves you got, the streets are full of them. in germany you have a very light punishment, but you have extremely few thieves in comparison.
