- Here's a 1994 reunion of the stars of the long running British television popular science programme "How" Jack Hargreaves,Fred Dinenage,Bunty James,Jon Miller
How was a British educational television show created by Jack Hargreaves. It was produced from 1966 by Southern Television, for whom Hargreaves was a presenter and Deputy Programme Controller. It lasted until 1981, when the company lost its franchise to TVS.
How was originally devised by Hargreaves for an audience of adults returning from the pub. Its aim would be to give facts and demonstrations that could settle arguments or be used as pub tricks.[citation needed] A one-off pilot was broadcast at 11.15pm on 22 March 1966, to viewers in the Southern Television area only.
Following the pilot, Hargreaves felt the show might work better in an afternoon slot, aimed at making facts fun for children. Thus, at 5.25pm on 25 April 1966, Southern began live transmission of the first programme in the series of How, which would continue in a similar format for the next fifteen years. Made in Southern's Southampton studios, it provided answers to questions beginning with the word "How". Each episode began with the presenters all raising one hand and saying "How" simultaneously (mimicking the stereotypical Native American greeting). Topics commonly covered included science, history, mathematics and simple puzzles. The formula proved so successful that it was soon broadcast to the whole ITV network and given two slots per week.
The show was originally presented by Hargreaves alone. He was joined by Fred Dinenage (1966-1981), Jon Miller (1966-1981), Bunty James (1966-1969 and 1970-1976), Dr Tom Gaskell (1969), Jill Graham (1969-1970) and Marian Davies (1977-1981). Occasional stand-ins for Hargreaves included Barry Bucknell.[2]
The series came to an end in 1981 when Southern Television lost its ITV franchise, but was revived as How 2 in 1990 by TVS - Zábava
Nearly sixty three now, remember how in the early seventies, brilliant show. Jack hargreaves to me was a national treasure. Bless him.
Same here, happy days.
Fred Dinenage is great . Still strutting his stuff on regional tv news despite being 156 years old.
Loved this as a young Boy. Proper TV. God the world has Turner to utter shit. Jack. What a man. Old Country. Wonderful.
Right on, Frank.... kids nowadays cannot make a proper paper aeroplane.
Yes Frank!! 👍
What a load of rubbish. Why would you even say that? It's not as if you have a clue what the average 9 or 10-year-old watches. It was one of my favourite shows when I was that age but my kids had their own shows too. They loved the stuff on wildlife, making things art and history and the TV channels are awash with that stuff. They have ten times more stuff to watch than we did. It's not all cartoons and rubbish.
SORRY FOR THE LANGUAGE...THE WORLD HAS TURNED INTO FUCKING SHIT.......and when i see great tv again like this....it makes me sad even morose,...and angry.....how tv and the culture....have imploded completely since the year 2000...i think....
Many kids that grew up in the 60s and 70s will remember this show. Great entertainment for children and their parents.
all four of these marvellous people are, quite rightly, legends of TV.
The best part of How was that mistakes sometimes happened and the team simply went with the flow. True professionals.
Absolutely loved this! At 70, my children really enjoyed this, back then, as did I!
What a great show How was. Very interesting and from an era when the presenters were well spoken and didn’t need to shout or show off to the camera. Today’s offerings aren’t even worth watching. How I miss the 70’s 😞👍
RIP Jack and Jon.
Just so good,,,,,Sitting in Japan,,,,years after watching this,,,, Man, where did the time go?
Same 'ere nipper, down Nagasaki way!
Loved How, always tried to see it. Jack was my favourite, he just had a way of making things seem fantastic. I liked them all, however. It was a brilliant programme of the time, and a shame there isn’t something like it now. Rather like a Popular Mechanics magazine for the TV, that’s what we need.
Loved this prog as a nipper, especially when Jack went fishing. Thanks to all of you:)
Jack Hargreaves, Fred Dinenage, Bunty James and Jon Miller. four treasured names from my childhood. And a *far* superior How than the later one with Gaz Topps.
Yes, I never liked Gaz Topps(sic) either.
Gaz Topps Legend!
@@GarethJonesTV I thought Gaz Topps should've stuck to carrying guitars for The Alarm.
a fabulous video, and they all looked to be happy in each others company again, legends all.
Couldn't have put it better. Super comment
Fantastic show full of information and laughs with bunty jack jon and fred
Those were the days. Loved every minute.
I loved this show when I was a kid in the 1970s when things would go wrong
Loved this when I was akid
Lovely programme still see Fred locally, Jack Hargreaves out of town wonderful 👍👍👍 happy days
Yeh remember it well Jack was great
Lovely trip down memory lane
I remember that water trick when it was first shown! This was my favourite of all the Children’s magazine programs back then.
How ! was a wonderful programme. I tried to NEVER miss a show. A part of my childhood
I liked the one where they showed how to make a bomb in a tin with flour and blow the lid off made this at my grandmothers 🤣
Yes a treacle tin if my memory is correct hole in tin with tubing some flower a small candle which when lit was allowed to burn due to the tubing as lid placed back on and air through tubing stopped with thumb and boom. I ate a lot of treacle to empty that tin.l.o.l.
Loved that program 👌🏻😎
Lovely programme , lovely people and a lovely time . How l miss the '70's .
memories it was a fab program always loved the bits that jack used to do,such an inspiration
Best kids TV show of the 70s
I remember loving this when I was very young
How lovely
One of my favourite tv shows growing up. Need to bring it back and make learning fun again
Fred took the Micky out of my accent. back in the 90s. I never had a comb-over, Fred.we all had a good laugh at your hair that you never had. all good fun.
And the HOW theme was just as good!
Loved this and Jack we need more of this
Brilliant I remember watching this as a young boy
Loved How,
Great show wish they bring it back
Good old Fred. Now doing the local, Meridian, TV news in 2021.
I loved How when I was a kid
Learning HOW things are made and done, it was great viewing too for children too, I know first hand ! Some things were better back then.
This must have been filmed weeks before Jack Hargreaves died in March, 1994.
Yes sad but glad they all got together for the video
This was the last time JH - my stepdad - was in a studio. He replied to Fred's "See you soon, Jack' in the carpark after the reunion "I'm afraid you won't old son". Fred mentions this exchange in his introduction to Paul Peacock's biography of Jack that was published in 2004.
Combovers never die - they just fade away.
oh my god, close your eyes and the voices are just the same, lmao. open them and be surprised at the faces. gosh ,wonder years.
Bunty James was a stunningly, stunningly beautiful woman and she is still lovely!
Time machines do exist then! 👍 Brilliant stuff.
How was unique and loved it. Generally childrens tv was superior back then. I feel sad that children today do not have the same opportunities of entertainment we had back then.
Fabulous program and happy times, thanks for posting.
HOW interesting - my brother is an artist in *Wick* - he emigrated there from abandoned betrayed Manchester
When childrens tv wasn't designed to keep us dumb.
How was brilliant .
Love how... Grew up on it.... Bloody Gr8 show
I remember this as a kid. Education and humour. They didn't talk down to you or dumb it down.
Brilliant. Went and studied Science at University as I got hooked!
That brought back great memories, thank you.
67now used to watch this,as a young lad,we learnt alot,quite different now
Thanks for posting this. I loved HOW as a child. I still retain a love of learning.
My fav was how to open a bottle of wine with a shoe lace
Essential life skills and required viewing for any future students.
BRILLIANT! Loved these guys, back in the day. THANKS TO ALL YOU FOUR!
Sawdust and water. Ah, happy days!
This was my 70s tv show after coming home from school.....great days.
Wow, transported back and sat in front of the tv watching this.
,,, DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT BACK THEN, NOR THE PRESENT. SUITED & BOOTED TO SIT IN A ROWING BOAT AND TALK ABOUT WW2 SUBMARINES. CLASSIC ,,, 😊🙏😊
Quality presenters entertaining children and making them think.
This must have been close to Jack Hargreaves death, he died in March 1994. R.I.P.
Sublime days.
Ha Ha! What characters. I remember being glued around our old BW TV for their program. Loved it!
I still impress people with Jack’s method of how to joint a chicken without a knife!
Sad to say they are all gone now except Fred.
The "How" used to frighten me as a child. It is strange how we change and lose our timidity as we grow up.
Proper people, normal people, down to earth and charismatic rather than plastic and fake like today.
Brilliant. Made for kids but never talked down to them.
" How " would be too intelligent for children today.
No it wouldn't.
Such a sad thing to comment on.
@@VeggieBackGarden
I agree .kids today would love it if they were given the chance.
Kids are kids .. Wonderful open minds . unlike us oldies .
Rubbish. Kids are as smart and inquisitive as they always have been.
Pure and simple Tv.....GOLD...As a kid me and my mates loved this.....good work guys....
should be shown in schools. laughed/cried
I loved that show when I was a kid!
What a great comb-over!
How i wish we had practical programmes like this ..as for U Boat spotting!! Hahahaha brilliant!
Jack Hargreaves my favourite out of towner.
Takes me back to being a kid How was the best ,,,,,
Great show.Pity it ever finished.
Jack looks younger
One of the TV channels should run repeats of "How". Far better than most of the rubbish they put out nowadays!
Truly great tv
Just good people entertainment the public. Great memories.
Happy days of my childhood.
I still have two How original paper back books. but from my youth How was my second favourite show learning so much practical information from the full team of presenters. which is why I love Magic effects, art , woodwork, animals ,explosives of the stage kind. My third show was ''vision on'' for all my art related stimuli. fourth was ''Animal magic''. fifth was ''Blue Peter'' and anything with sticky back plastic. and charity fund raising efforts of its viewers. For my sci-fi addiction at 6th ''The Tomorrow's people'' .But first will always be ''Dr Who''........But back to How who remembers watch on Black and White tv and a spinning disc to see colour on a black and white set. and how to create the impossible triangle. and so many more memories of the show and a shame show is not still running
They sorta know but they don't really know the influence they had on us, legends, all of them, Thanks guys!
Jack!
TREMENDOUS!
With the Indian greeting of "How", I have to wonder if that wasn't somehow inspired by Grey Owl's two command performances in 1937 / 38 for the King. Grey Owl certainly took the country by storm back then..... his books I suspect, would have been especially appreciated by Jack.
No cultural appropriation issues in those days!
If you search very hard there is a How episode with Alistair Campbell, Tony’s Blair’s partner in crime showing off his skills when he was a busker.
How
Never missed it🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A wonderful show. Second only to Blue Peter.
Jack was the only one that aged well - but he was old when it was first on .... Great show
Must've been Jack's last TV appearance, he died in March that year.
R.I.P. Jack Hargreaves, the Nation's Cool Uncle.
At the good old age of 83. You see smoking and drinking, eating meat, is not going to kill you early. If your numbers up its up.
On the day this aired, he sat in his armchair and watched it, then went up to bed and passed away in his sleep.
String, 9 volt batteries, elastic bands, wire, nails, a pocket knife, bubble gum, the Beano, a shoe polish tin, pram wheels, chalk, a length of rope, cap guns, an action man, plimsolls, friends galore and orange juice...all this plus HOW and any 8 year old could concur the world... Happy innocent days of old.
Fred Dinenage, Legend
Why dont they do a new series of How with Tom Scott?
They'd need to change the show's title, Marie, cultural appropriation and all that.
@@CHIL2903 still a great idea though
As soon as I saw this upload I raced to watch it. I was totally engaged with it as a kid and charmed by the good natured hosts.
Now we frighten our kids silly with doom-laden Cvid porn and climate change panic both driven by bad science. Add to this the mental problems caused by emersion in the unreality of the iPhone.
What rubbish. You don't know what science is. And you can't spell either. Emersion means to come up from being underwater. Get a grip!
