Burning the bearing off would have heated and expanded the shaft making it harder to get the pulley off.

You need several large torches all heating the rim at the same time. This should be done while the shaft is still cold. The expanding rim will open up the hole. Your jacks can be left in place while you heat it up.

Heat the pulley around the shaft, then put candle or paraffin around the shaft to lubricate it. The heat will melt the candle. And it will suck right in. Friction will be reduced significantly.

That pulley probably has at least one half thousands per inch of shaft diameter interference, and the sledge hammer's and bottle jack ain't going to do it. But I would love to see you guys with some steel toed Redwings.

There is a possibility that there might have been a burr during original installation causing galling in the mating fits. That being the case we should drill and tap appropriate pulling holes in the face of the stuck pulley, with robust allthread and strong back. Have two rosebud heavy duty oxygen/acetylene on standby if needed .Ofcourse get the highest rated pressure hydraulic cylinder available that is compatible with the bolting system and jack against the shaft to break the taper if it is not friction welded, and if that the case and if there is a spare pulley available, then be open sacrificing the pully by relieving the fit without damaging the shaft. Evidently this is a one off deal that rarely happens, been there done that, many good lucks with it.

On a scale this large, i would have suggested drilling the shaft center out, allowing the outer cylindrical wall to "taper", if possible. Then building a even burning fire under the "flat" pully, while packing the bearing race surface with ice. Yes all night if necessary. I've done this alone on a MUCH smaller scale. Weaken the shaft, chill the shaft, heat the pully, and possibly the weight of the pully will allow it to fall off. Then weld the hollow shaft solid again and clean up the outer surface.

First find out how the flywheel is fitted to the shaft. Is it a tapered or straight fit? Is there a keyway? What about locking pins or bolts hidden under the paint. For a sharft of this size at least 200t will be needed to pull the flywheel of. Using a single hydraulic jack can bend the shaft, that's bullshit. So heat the flywheel hub to about 200°C and use several jacks evenly spaced around the hub and pump at the same time.

I'm on the fence with this one. Sure if you're using an abrasive disc to cut or grind and you have sparks flying towards your face, wear at least goggles or a visor. If it's loud wear ear protection. Simple. Gloves hmmm, limited dexterity unable to tell how hot something is until it's too late, getting caught in a drill or worse a lathe. I'd rather lose a finger tip than my whole hand or arm. I guess it also depends on the operator.

Everything is wrong. No safety. Tiny chain holding up many tons. Hammers 1/500th the mass of the parts. Mismanagement of the cutting torch. 150 year old jacks with the illest fitting levers ever. It takes more than earnest willpower to get things done.

Expanding the metal with heat isn't going to help you. Its going to bind up at that angle also. You need to suspend this off the ground and then use the weight of the bottom pulley along with sledge hammer.

no how do you hammer the pulley then if you flip it over. the weight of the machine is not very much compared to the jacks. they are at least 20 ton each maybe 30 ton each. the machine weighs maybe 10 ton.

Between the houding and the pully more than 1 jack (best to use 3) ore use double wedges wich forse upposit with 2 hamers at the same time .......keep cooling the axel ! I used this technic lots of times and never failed ! Still 1 thing tey use not enough oxigen wile torching !
