    The problem with this is that you need a truck license. And you are only allowed a certain hours of working because it has a tachometer for the hours working. With a tractor you can let a kid drive it with a special license. But that is not so expensive as a truck license (in the Netherlands)And there a no maximum hours of working because it’s not registered on a tractor.

      In the USA, trucks used for agriculture are not restricted by many of the laws and limits that govern the rest of the trucking industry.

    • @autobootpiloot

      You can drive a truck like this as a agricultural vehicle in the Netherlands. Then it’s just a different tractor as far as the law is concerned. That also means a lower allowed top speed so there is not much benefit from it. There are however some companies that use trucks like this as a agricultural vehicle in the Netherlands so they might have some advantages.

    While it is typically best to use specialized equipment for specific tasks, for some the financial investment and space required for so many specialized vehicles is prohibitive. While not nearly as efficient, a multi use vehicle like the Argo truck can allow smaller farmers to power equipment on a smaller scale. Also seem great for a self contractor. They could add several services with 1 vehicle. Nice video!

    • @armoredp
      @armoredp Před 5 měsíci +5

      @@BlackSeaRC Not to be a know-it-all, but to my knowledge Soviet-Russia succesfully implemented axle driven trailers in the early 60's, 20 years before Mulitdrive was founded. Example of a truck with an axle driven trailer is the Zil 137. Although Multidrive might still be a pioneer in commercialising it.

    • @BlackSeaRC
      @BlackSeaRC Před 5 měsíci

      @@armoredp You are right that Soviet engineers experimented with these concepts to try to improve mobility in harsh conditions. The ZiL-137 was a prototype around 1970. Prior to this there was also the NAMI-058C prototype around 1967. Neither concept seems to have entered mass production.
      David J.B. Brown (the founder of Multidrive) spent his early career as a logging contractor in UK and the Congo. He was dissatisfied with the trucks, trailers and tractors available and designed his own articulated tractor (patented in 1958). Multidrive was founded in 1983 but it wasn't until 1987, when David Brown acquired Bedford Trucks and renamed it AWD, that all-wheel drive tractor-trailer combinations started to be produced. It is unclear exactly when his particular concept was formulated. He may have been aware of the Soviet vehicles or he may have come up with his concept independently whilst designing his own vehicles. By the way, the Multidrive powered tractor-trailer combinations are still in production in China (see Junton Multidrive).

    Teddering hay with a 8×8 truck, my goodness! Are hay feild are rough that would be sweet. But the neighbors might be confused since I'm in America, and you don't really see that here. Lol. But like the one fellow said at the top of the comments there's a couple of places in our hay fields that are a type spot to get in and my buddy that dose our hay says he has some fields that are really pain in the ass to get in our hay fields at our old farm were like that so I know. So yeah, getting around fields with such a large vehicle could be a problem. But it's still a really cool concept, and I would like having something that could do multiple rules.

    Soil compaction is the main reason these aren't used to plant or really do anything more then pull trailers. Farm tractors are designed to reduce ground compaction and feild tearup ( the tires will rip up the top layer of the soil) there's a reason why the tractor design and shape hasn't changed since the steam tractor it's the best design for them

    • @SuperVistaprint
      @SuperVistaprint Před 5 měsíci

      Eh…no. Depending on model, more tires, same weight results in what? Yes…less compaction due to less ground pressure and the field tearup is something you would need to show me proof of…as the profiles are just as or even less aggressive. And when you see what a tracked or standard tractor do to wet soil…it won’t look much worse with a truck. And just because the visual appearance hasn’t changed doesn’t mean the insides and the tech haven’t changed. You can’t really compare a tractor from the 80s to a modern one

    Just a fancy name for putting a construction truck frame and wide balloon tires on an over the road truck format. Most farmers can do this in their barn for less than a third of the price.
    The only real place this sort of truck would be useful is in a role where you are just driving around with a product load. Sprayer on low standing crops, hauling to the grain silo during harvest directly from the harvester, brush fire truck. Big tank, big cargo, long road haul is the 3 key factors for these.
    Unimog is for niche/ family farmers who need something better than a lawn and garden tractor, but only can afford 1 vehicle, and need to drive around town.

  • @glynluff2595

    This has been tried many times but has never been overly successful. They work in very large areas with big turning areas where passage is rapid and ground impact reduced. However, in very confined spaces where accurate ploughing and detailed ground tasks are required they are far less attractive and of limited use to smaller operators. A heavy hauler is a fine machine but like the tractor it’s uses are partial. So really this is an advertising adjunct for sales in America.

    • @damianpeterkelly1234
      @damianpeterkelly1234 Před 5 měsíci +3

      Tractors have simple engines and complex gearboxes allowing them to do field work. Trucks tend to focus on engines that deliver maximum mpg as most trucks travel distance. So neither are suited to the tasks of the other. With the advent of faster tractors it makes more sense to use tractors for field work 90% of the time and live with their issues for carting on the road.

Always ask in journalism who is the journalist seeking to influence as important now as when I was at school in the fifties. There is also I agree a market in the East of Europe but that seems to be occupied in other ways at the moment. There is also the point that in some economies tractor diesel is rated less than lorry diesel when used on the open road.

    • @glynluff2595
      @glynluff2595 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@thesayxx I did many years ago and asked a farmer why they were not more successful on farms. Apparently there were problems in ploughing which is not, as many non ploughboys think a matter of shoving the tackle in the dirt and pulling but of constant adjustment in variable soils especially in the years before electronic adjustment. This does not make them bad it makes them workhorses of a different nature depending on the agricultural work demanded of them. In hill country where a farm might have forestry as well as tilling and hauling they may be a wonderful addition but if you are ploughing a large area of plane then not quite as successful as a specific vehicle. So for a small farmer in a very mixed landscape environment they may well be the best investment available and in many areas of Europe they fulfil this role as a trip up mountain and hill farms will show. In modern farming which has moved beyond the child story book stage for a generation or so massive machines travelling over large landscapes are now the rule and specivity of function rules when accountants recommend the best financial investment.

      Here in Germany, where most of these Agro Trucks are made, there are numerous different types of drivers licenses. The one you need depends on the type of the vehicle, top speed, weight and so on. Basically, to drive a truck, you need a proper license for standard trucks. If however the top speed is reduced to 60 km/h, it counts as a "landwirtschaftliche Zugmaschine", or agricultural tractor, and can be driven by sixteen year old kids who are allowed to drive any other tractor. Also, in this case governmental restrictions for the amount of time you are allowed to spend behind the wheel do not apply.

    Agro truck concept looks pretty strange for me. If it's only with fifth wheel/multilift upfit- so it's basically 4x4 (or 6x6) truck with funny wide wheels. Common 6x6 truck (especially army truck) with the same upfit could do the same job.
    If we use agro truck with full tractor equipment (hitch, hydraulics, PTO and others), so this is a question about price (such agro truck would cost pretty much) and effectiveness in comparison with tractor (tractor has better weight distribution for heavy equipment on the back, tractor cab has a good visibility in the any direction, a lot of controls for equipment and so on).
    Maybe these agro trucks with swap body upfits and powered equipment could be used as auxiliary vehicles on the farm, but to be used as the tractors- I think it wouldn't work. (But who knows, I'm not a farmer:)

    Ive used a few trucks for various jobs. spreading,spraying and as a chaserbin/grain cart. A tractor does a better job.

    Tires are wide and low pressure NOT to give safety and stability... It's to spread the load and have lower ground pressure so the field doesn't get damaged. There is a reason why tractors have huge tires and can drive over plants without damaging them.

    it's thermal, so the same problem with oil as with a tractor that a farmer already owns, so what's the point?

    Can't imagine trucks like these taking over much proper agricultural work. An agricultural tractor is fine tuned for this kind of work, whereas a truck is not. Moreover, trucks generally have piss poor fuel consumption figures and poor engine torque figures.

    I guess you are not a farmer or know a lot of farming. Tractors are not "only" used for field work and not only designed to do such tasks.

    These cant replace tractors, tractors are still too universal to many jobs for these to compete. We have 2 tractors Case with frontloader and Valtra with forestry crane. We can do normal farm work. We do forestry both falling trees and collecting the logs. We do chipping of the said trees for heating. We haul grain with them because they have 53km/h gearbox. We do crop spraying because the can eqipped with narrow tires and GPS. We do snowwork other with snowplower and other with backend plate and snowbucket. We can do some light excavator work like clearing up ditches when they grown in or too small. And this all with cost of 2 equipment instead of like 5 or 6 specialized equipment.

    Won’t replace tractors because farmers have teenage Eastern European immigrants driving up to 40 tonnes on a car driving licence in tractors with no operators licence, tachograph, drivers regulations etc…. Just like farmers pay no business rates and have thousands of privileges, grants and tax exceptions…. No farmers don’t grow food for us….. they grow food for money…..
