How To Handle Hognose Bites

  • We've noticed a lot of people afraid of having hognoses due to their "venomous" status, so we decided to make a video to show you what to do in case you get bitten and how to avoid a reaction. Of course, this is based on our personal experience with bites as well as research done on extreme cases of bite reactions. However, the Plains (Western) Hognose venom/saliva should not be considered medically significant or dangerous to humans.

    A friend of mine has two different types of Hognose snakes. Her finger and hand swelled up pretty bad when one of them bit her and she had to go to the hospital. She told me not everyone's body reacts the way hers did. But people should keep in mind that they can't kill you, but you just don't know how your body will react.

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Everyone's body can react differently, just like some people are allergic to dogs, cats, and other animals.
      How long was the hognose latched on, if you don't mind me asking ?

    I was just bit my my female albino Minerva about an hour ago. She tagged me perfectly on the side of my thumb and instantly dug the rear fangs in. It took me longer than it should have to remove her, as I was trying to be gentle. Total time was probably 3-4 minutes. Considerable swelling on my right thumb and part of the hand. Thanks for this video! I'll be able to remove her faster if it happens again. Had her almost 2 years and never been bitten.

      It happens sometimes! They just get the munchies and need to chomp on whatever they can reach. It's better to be prepared! Make sure to keep your hand elevated above your heart and remove all jewelry on it (if you haven't already). Best of luck!

      They could have lethal venom and it wouldn't matter if they needed to chew on you for 10 minutes to envenomate you. You should ask him if he's afraid of bullets without a gun, because that's what hognose venom is, except these bullets are more like paintball pellets (and they still don't have a gun to shoot them).

I held him carefully, just behind his jaw, gave him a sec and he seemed to figure out what to do. Then he "died" blood and all 😏😂 I talked to him the whole time, slowly toom him back to his enclosure, and gently popped him back in. He looks great for a "definitely really dead, honest) hognose baby 😂❤ my husband has had veins come up a bit on that hand (our boy bit twice in about a minute 👀) he's got some (very mild) swelling, tingling and tightness. Zero pain. However, the location made it SO HARD to get her off there - she was on for 45 seconds to one minute, and I had bad swelling up to my elbow and discolouration for a week, itching and burning for several hours, couldn't make a fist (a couple days). I hear people say that if you are allergic to bee stings that you should avoid getting a Hognose snake, but others say that these 2 venoms are completely unrelated, so it doesn't matter. The reason I bring this up is because I hope to eventually get a Hognose and while I have never personally been stung by a bee, wasp, etc., both my dad and my brother have had pretty severe allergic reactions to bee stings. Does this mean Hognoses are a no-go for me? I'm interested to hear your feedback.

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před rokem +1

      Bee stings are different from hognose bites. Additionally, from the research I have found, people usually only have bad reactions when they let the hoggie chew on them for over 2 minutes straight.
      My mother is deathly allergic to bees and has almost died from a bee sting before. I am allergic to mosquito bites and get swollen, red, and itchy around the mosquito bite. However, I have no reactions or problems with the hoggies when they get excited and bite. I just always make sure to remove them promptly.
      The most Brenden has experienced is mild itchiness.
      I hope this helped!

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před měsícem

      First, make sure to take off any tight fitting clothing or jewelry. Second, take a benadryl or another form of allergy medicine. Third, it becomes painful or the swelling gets worse (or you notice any discoloration), head to an emergency care or hospital so they can make sure you get proper care.
      It is very unlikely you would have any issues if you promptly remove them and don't let them chew, but then again, everyone's immune system is different, just like how some people are very allergic to cats or dogs.
      In general, first make sure to sanitize and wash the area with soap (regardless of a reaction or not).

    I've always been curious about the toxicity of hognose snakes. I suspect that it depends. I'm sure some species only use their rear fangs to deflate toads and frogs while other species have a mild venom to relax the toad/frog.
    Of interest the worst bite from a snake I ever received was from a very large yellow rat snake. Caught me by surprise because of how cold it was outside. Bite seemed mundane until 3 days later when an infection had started taking effect. Some neosporin quickly eliminated the infection but that was a first. Makes me think that saliva had gotten forced into my hand and that's what caused the infection. But that's never happened before or since (so far). Not even my ball python bite gave me an infection like that.

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před 2 měsíci +1

      We personally haven't noticed a lot, but we have actually read an article talking about Eastern Hognoses (which people seem to agree are considered more toxic than Westerns) in which they extracted their venom and injected frogs and mammals. I believe almost all of the frogs died promptly and 2 had localized swelling for a few hours, but did die before 24 hours. The small mammals (mice in this experiment) had close to no reactions, other than 2 that had localized swelling and tenderness, but then recovered with no long-term consequences to their health. I'll include the citation to this article at the end of the comment for those interested.
      I do believe that most reactions we see in people are mostly reactions to things similar to what you experienced with the rat snake, in that the body's immune system reacted to just having something foreign pushed into its body (think of how some people get infections from cat bites/scratches, etc.). We actually have a friend that had a very strong food-response bite from their Mexican Black Kingsnake and she was chewing on them for a good 5 minutes before they were able to remove her, and they actually ended up having a moderate amount of localized swelling and took a few days for their body to go back to normal.
      There is still so much we can learn about hognoses (and all snakes in general), but I do think that they should generally be considered harmless. Then again, peanuts are considered harmless and sold in supermarkets, but should still come with warnings for the people that do have peanut allergies.
      Anyway, lots of rambling--sorry about that! It's just a fascinating topic I think deserves a lot more attention.
      Here is the citation for the study I mentioned earlier:
      McAlister, Wayne H. "Evidence of mild toxicity in the saliva of the hognose snake (Heterodon)." Herpetologica 19.2 (1963): 132-137.

    • @LilSkimp
      @LilSkimp Před 2 lety

      You actually could die within a few minutes from a mildly venomous snake like the Hognose if you are anaphylactic allergic. You usually develop the allergy from years of handling venomous snakes so you should be good if you haven’t had years around deadlier snakes but there is a rare chance you could be badly allergic. Dingo Dinkelman who’s a huge snake expert got hit by a mildly venomous snake that’s normally harmless (before he knew he was badly allergic he was free handling it) and after it bit him he nearly died and had to be rushed out of the Belize jungle. I believe it was from a tiger snake.

    • @LilSkimp

      So yeah it definitely could have worse effects like bee stings do but in rare cases if you are severely allergic a hognose could kill you

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před 2 lety +3

      I've heard it compared to such, but it really is kind of needing more accurate studies to be done. As of present, it is not considered to be medically significant since no one has ever died of a hognose bite. Every documented case of a medically significant reaction (in need of hospitalization) occured after prolonged chewing ranging from 2-5 minutes. I have only heard of one person (not a documented case) mentioning that they got bit and had some swelling after only a 10-second bite.
      I do think that in regards to the bee-sting aspect, it shouldn't be as comparable as people make it out to be, since they have different chemical compositions. A good example is how I have been stung by a wasp and nothing happened, but absolutely swell up with mosquito and ant bites. It's how each individual body reacts.
      Overall, it's best to avoid prolonged chewed if it occurs. Sanitize your hands well before handling to decrease the likelihood of latching and promptly remove them. If it's hard to get a good grip on their little noses, you can use a credit or business card to slip underneath their mouth and pull them off.
      Water on the face does not often work with these guys.
      I hope that helped!

      We definitely have a few eager eaters that try to do that. It's important to create a feeding ritual that teaches them when food is around and when it is not. We personally tap their enclosures with feeding tongs 3 times before feeding for some snakes and for others, we tap the enclosure after we put the meal inside. This helps them differentiate when food will be available and when it won't.

      Space is pretty important, though males tend to be much smaller. Most of my males have plenty of space in 10-20 gallons. They definitely can be on the more expensive side of snakes, but a lot of breeders offer payment plans and can also accept credit cards nowadays. I do believe that all poop will smell, but hognose poop smells significantly less than most snakes. We do have hundreds in our home and they are not stinky. Generally, poop will mostly only smell when it is fresh. It's a lot like bird poop. As for keeping them alive in captivity, I personally have not had that experience. They were my first snake ever and if you make sure to get them from a reputable breeder and provide the proper setup, they are very good snakes! I have had the same amount of fussiness with young kignsnakes as I have with young hoggies.

      I actually do plan on making another one specifically using an adult, but most adults (in our experience) mellow out. Also, most people start with babies, so it helps to show them that they won't be hurting the hoggie by removing them.

      Expos are a ton of fun and as long as you look over the snake, check for mites, healthy tongue flicks, bright eyes, and follow standard quarantine once you bring them home, it's usually good. Of course, you can also do research on any vendors you do find at expos. Personally, we do most of our sales on morphmarket but we are working on going to expos every month (if possible). Our next one will be in Bakersfield, CA next month.
      I super appreciate the trust and would be so honored to helping you find a dream hoggie. JMG is also a super awesome place to get a hoggie from. We have a few from Jeff as well.

      Hahaha, well, there are very few snakes, even venomous, that will actually kill you within that time-frame. Of course, there is always the possibility that your immune system may react to the digestive enzymes in an extreme way, but in those cases, you are actually running into an auto-immune response to the venom, not just the venom itself. I got to learn about venomous snakes and treating their bites for a venomous handling course, so it's very refreshing! I'm glad I was able to ease your worries! • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace  Před rokem

      Hello! They are actually not dangerous to people unless you let then chew on you. Unlike most snakes, if they bite, they get stuck on you so putting their head under water or pouring rubbing alcohol won't "make" them let go because they physically can't. In the future, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have a collection of living animals that you intend to feed off, please rehome them instead. Even if they were dangerous, there would be plenty of qualified people able to care for them. If that wouldn't have been possible, you could always reach out to a local reptile store or even the Department of Wildlife, as these are not feeder snakes and were not bred with the intention of being food for other snakes. In the event of natural death, it is still painful but understandable to feed them to avoid waste, but overall, it breaks my heart into a million pieces to know so many hognoses lost their lives due to misinformation/misunderstanding.
      They do not have "True Venom", nor do they have an injection mechanism, nor has anyone ever died or even lost a body part due to a hognose chewing on them. All documented cases were from bites that were chewing of 2-10 minutes long. Any animal (or human, for that matter), chewing on you for over 2 minutes will cause aggravation.
      I am sorry you had to go through this and I hope that we as breeders and enthusiasts can collectively do a better job making sure people understand hognoses before purchasing them.

      I actually am gathering a group of volunteers that do want to help me explore if the duration of chewing will truly invoke symptoms as well, which would also need to be repeated a few times in the event of developed sensitivity (as in, no reaction during their first bite, and then a reaction following a future bite). It's a video that will be made at some point, but waivers will need to be signed by all parties participating, since we do not know what the results will be. Do this with a 3 ft hognose and tell me the same thing. If you're an aspiring herpetologist or biologist you know they are rear fanged and mildly venomous and have venom glands... How do "biologists stand on both sides" an animal either has glands and venom or not... You sound silly as hognose have venom and the bigger they are the more they have and the more of your hand gets the the rear of the mouth... My good friend was bitten by his adult hognose and did in fact have a reaction to the venom. the bigger the tooth, the deeper the venomous saliva goes in... Grooved teeth.
