    I used this tutorial to teach my filly to lay down and she does so beautifully and consistently now!! No ropes, pressure, or force. It took awhile like you said (at least 20 sessions) but I'm so happy with her progress.. thank you so much!

    I love this method!
    At my barn we got a new horse that didn’t know how to lie down and we had to teach it. I was someone who volunteered into doing it so I followed this video and it worked like a charm! Maybe around 20-30 sessions. We practiced as much as possible. I’m really happy this worked without pressure, ropes and most importantly no stress.
    Thank you for this video!!

    I really like this way in teaching your horse how to lay down! Without ropes and bowing before hand. Did you teach Oreo the same way to lay down? I just have a slightly bigger horse and I was wondering if the same method would work? I haven't tried but I'm so keen. :)

    • @JC_horsetraining
      @JC_horsetraining  Před 9 lety +2

      Martala Townsend I taught oreo a slightly different way, but i taught Jon (the fjord this way). I taught oreo to bow on both sides and then i would ask to "bow with both legs" which turned into a kneel. From there i picked a soft spot in the arena and eventually he laid down. It took a couple years though. Also try to wet down your horse or after a sweaty ride and they will be more inclined to do it!

    This is exactly the video I needed thanks for uploading! done similar things with my mare but always kinda had some holes in understanding what to do, trying to reward at the right time etc, she tends to ignore the whip unless it's hard pressure but I believe if I insist firmly without being harsh about it she'll understand that I want her to do something

    • @JC_horsetraining
      @JC_horsetraining  Před 9 lety +6

      i usually let oreo loose in the arena for a couple minutes os that he can roll on his own. However when i ask him to lay down he is not allowed to roll. If he tries too i will simply be annoying with my whip, tug a little on the halter and make a shhh sound to tell him that is not what i want, if he stands up then i just ask him to lay down again and reward when he is quiet!

    So I did what you instructed. At least the walking down with her head. I also clicker train so as she went down I clicked right away and fed her a treat. After that she realized that that'd what she had to do. so she learned it within an hour. is that good? she now repeats it whenever I ask for it. I tap her underneath her tummy instead of The leg cuz I wanna use that one for something else.

    is it easier to teach your horse to bow before teaching to lay down?

    • @equiiviah7116
      @equiiviah7116 Před 8 lety

      Well yes and no. There is pros and cons of teaching your horse to bow before laying down.
      Pros:
      1. Your horse will be more comfortable around people are sketchy areas whilst on the ground, it will form a build in trust.
      2. Your horse will adjust to cues when you're trying to teach them something. (Depends on what tricks you're teaching & your methods).
      3. When teaching your horse to lay down it may be a bit more eager to lay down, it may also be easier having taught your horse or pony to bow first.
      Cons:
      1. Your horse will become too comfortable with bowing and will do it all the time, always expecting a reward. Or when you're in the middle of teaching your horse to lay down it will not go on the ground because you are confusing it, as you didn't reward it for bowing. It will most likely assume you want it to bow, and won't want to go any further down to the ground.
      Really it just depends on the horse & the methods you use.
      Hope this helped x
