First time traveling by train in the USA - New York to Boston

- Traveling by train in the USA is an experience that was missing in my bucket list. So we jumped at this chance to go from New York to Boston by train. The departure was at Penn Station in NYC (Moynihan Train Hall), and the arrival at South Station in Boston. We ended up going by coach on Amtrak, as last-minute prices on the Acela were higher than for a plane ticket. But despite the higher ticket cost, the trip was very worth it, and I now have some tips if you will travel by train for the first time as well.

► WHO AM I?
I am a Brazilian-American journalist living in Florida. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer. I created this channel to share the beauties of the world... stuff that for so long I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!
P.S.: The funny guy who appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American and he's actually camera-shy, that's why he's behind the camera most of the time 😉

Hey how arre you
Renata: The Amtra Train is just amazing with great space that have a great store, I will love to travels on this great train soon in the near future!
I think it's something that I really want to do soon... travel across the US by train... maybe a long vacation for 2022. Thanks for this, Renata!
You are most welcome.👍😀
I'm a nervous traveller and am doing this route next month. Your video was amazing for me - it helped to clear up what to expect at the train station / boarding / luggae etc. Thank you for taking the time to make the video & share with us
Glad it was helpful! Exact reason we produce these videos...to help fellow travelers. Enjoy your visit!
Muito obrigado! Bravo! Great Video! I have traveled several times from NYC (Penn Station, NYP) to Boston South Station. Great experience. Coming from a country, India, where people mostly take the trains, I recommend that Americans also should travel by train. Like Amtrak advertises--- " See America a the 'SEE' level "! It is so gratifying that now-a-days, Americans have started taking the train. In fact, U.S.A. has the largest "rail" network, but most tracks are unused or used very sparingly. It is great to see AMTRAK making a comeback! One thing: most AMTRAK Stations are right in the City centers...in fact, history has that the cities grew AROUND the TRAIN-STATIONS! Hence one gets to be right in the downtown area(s) when one travels by train! Look forward to having many such informative videos on TRAIN-trips as well!
Dear Rajeeve, On the east coast of America, the late Pennsylvania R.R built their lines to the center of the cities in order to bring passengers into the business area where the hotels and businesses had their headquarters. Where I lived before retiring was Jersey City, N.J which had their terminal where people took the ferries to NYC. From 1890 til 1910 the people used it and it went to the main business Area. For a mile it went above the streets by a 4 track El from near Journal to the Hudson River. From 1910 til 1967 the Pennsylvania R.R became the biggest and due to highways and airlines , it merged with the New York Central Railroad. It no longer exists but there is the Port Authority Trans Hudson subway where passengers from Amtrak change to,the subway trains. From there they go to the financial district of Wall street or take the subway to Midtown Manhattan 1 block away from Penn station. Penn is short for Pennsylvania and the hotel across 7th Avenue is also called the Pennsylvania Hotel. It has been there since 1920 and was built and owned by the same railroad. I should know, I am a New Yorker who grew up there.
Wow that was a great video! You two are so cheerful and refreshing. As a Bostonian I hope you enjoyed our lovely city. Thanks for giving such excellent advice about each and every aspect of the trip…and you did it so happily without complaints or criticism! The two of you must be truly happy in your own skin! You’re like little kids and that’s a great way to when traveling! Or living for that matter!
Thanks so much! 😊 We enjoy travel and Boston brings the spirit out of us. Love ur city and hope to return to explore more in the future.😀👍
It's really a beautiful view of the shore on this trip, and even the industrial stuff is really neat to see. When I have time I opt to take the train rather than drive or fly between Boston and NYC. The folks attending to the food car are always a laugh and have very positive energy. Best way to travel between the two cities unless you're on a tight schedule.
Thanks for sharing. The train is so easy I would prefer it every time. I imagine the roads must be full of traffic between the 2 cities.
True! And in my case bring a lot of coins with you. The staff in the cafe car would appreciate it because they can make change for other passengers easier. It pays to bring several denominations of dollar Bill's from 1 to 100 dollars for the trip and for a down payment for holding your room in the hotel.
Thanks for the suggestion
Never seen the US train. Thank you for this bunch of little details. Great video!
You are most welcome
There's also the Acela Line on that route. Faster trains, but a bit more expensive. New Acela trains are on their way.

Years ago, I lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia and took the train from there to Boston to visit with a university friend. I sat on the right and was thrilled to see the ocean as the train travelled part of Connecticut. I'm glad that you both enjoyed your trip. I have since taken Amtrak from my hometown of St. Albans, West Virginia, to visit my mother's sister in Arkansas and I totally enjoyed that trip, too - on that trip, I paid to have a little roomette and this gave me all of my meals and it was such alot of fun to go for a meal and meet other travellers and hear about their journeys. My family didn't think I'd enjoy Amtrak because I live now in the UK and have certainly taken the train in Britain, in Norway, and in the Netherlands, and they felt that Amtrak would be inferior but I think it has a lot of positives - I sure enjoyed my trips. Thanks for your video.
Renata, I hope you guys have a great times in Boston,MA. this week shooting great videos in the city for me & the World to watch FREE in joy 2021…Happy Thanksgiving this week!

Beautiful scenery. Thanks for watching
this train hall at new york train station looks very modern with the glass but at the same time very "classic" with some steel parts as it was built a long time ago. 👍🏻😊 nice cities along this train trip 🤩
Thanks for sharing. Yes, beautiful building it is re-purposed. Thanks for watching
Both Renata & Gordon are nice travellers! They show me travelling is an enjoyable activity.

I live in Boston. I have taken the Amtrak to NY many a time. Its industrial going through MA and then pretty w water, country in RI and CT. Gets industrial again getting close to NY. See the subways. Queens. Great trip.
Yes, fantastic scenery in CT and RI. I wish we would have stopped in between....but I guess we have a reason to return.
Hello, I will be in Boston this July and was wondering how practical or smart it is of me if I want to take a day trip to NYC. If need be I will rent a hotel in NYC but if you think I can go visit Times Square and Central Park Statue of Liberty in one day then I'll do a day trip. Please advise.

@@cesarzorrilla2416 Fully get it. The first time I went to Boston was a work trip 5 years ago, and I got so in love with the city. All this time I kept telling Gordon that Boston is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen 😍
5:12 The "dining car" is really called the "Cafe Car" and it extends beyond the actual cafe counter. The next car behind that is the Business Class car. There is no "restaurant car" in the Northeast Regional Amtrak trains.
Olá! Estávamos aguardando ansiosos os novos vídeos. Onde vocês guardaram os carros durante essa viagem a NY?

I’d like to see you ride the Coast Starlight from Los Angles to San Jose. It’s a bit slow, but the views are amazing!
That would be so nice! Now I’m really looking into more train rides in the US, as the views will probably be amazing!
Renata,There are many great historical Events in Philadelphia,PA. that you guys will really love in Center City of Philadelphia in November of 2021…
Yes, we know of the history. I believe we should visit Philadelphia and Washington next spring/fall.
I can’t wait for you guys to come Philadelphia,PA. Next spring in 2022!
I just went to Boston from Spokane, WA and loved the smooth ride, quietness, spacious seats, helpful train people, no tedious rules or TSA. If you’re not in a hurry and want getting there to be part of the journey, you love Amtrak like I do. And it’s actually about the same price as flying. I’m a definite train fan! BTW Boston is awesome.
Very cool. About how many hours does it take and did you do any stops in between?
@@RenataPereiraTV Three days stopping at towns along the way, layover in Chicago and Washington DC, then on to Boston. I’m 73 and have always wanted to see Boston and take a train ride and got them both checked off my bucket list. Next is a balloon ride. 🙂

Hey Renata and Gordon. You guys did a great job on this video report as well. I thought USA was very expensive but when I see the menu in the train station, it seems a little cheaper than in Belgium. From the looks of it, the trains are much more comfortable than in my country, but more expensive. Is interesting though that there are carriages where you are not allowed to talk loudly. In Belgium we have 1st and 2nd class but in itself it doesn't make much difference.
We have quiet carriages in Ireland as well, great if one needs to work or read, just turn any sounds off on the laptop, or wishes to sleep.
@@tonys1636 Thank you Tony for your response. This is what we are missing on our Belgian trains
You can get better prices here too if you buy in advance. But as the cities can be quite far from each other, I guess that's why prices might be higher. And I believe you have a huge advantage in Belgium: more high-speed trains, I think. Here it's still something brand new.
@@tonys1636 That might be really good to get work done while admiring the view
I've taken this trip plenty of times. So nice to see you take it too Renata. By the way I like snagging a seat in the dining car. Easier access to food and the plugs. Also ill usually take the right sided seats going northbound to enjoy the views of the Long Island Sound.
Thank you for sharing. We will have to get the LI sound side next time we take this train. 👍
The electric locomotives you saw are the newest streamlined ones of Amtrak.

Great timing, I will be making this journey next summer so this was really helpful to see. I had heard that you should sit on the right hand side of the train for the best views once out of New York, having sat on the left hand side would you agree or disagree with this?
Hello. Leaving from NYC, left hand side to see the city skyline and then right hand side to see the water as you get thru Conn/RI. We have 4 other NY videos...do check them out. Enjoy your trip next year.

Teşekkürler😀👍
Omg 😱, super kereeen👍👍👍👍👍. The most developed country in the world. 😀
Thank you so much 😀
Acela isn’t much faster than the Regional (I’ve used both). The only advantage that Acela has is that the trains are nicer. Acela has reserved seating. The Northeast Regional doesn’t (with the exception of Business Class, which is actually more expensive than a regular Acela ticket).
Amtrak dining is overpriced. Buy food at the station and then bring it onboard.
Thank you for your tips👍😀

Hotels are pricey in Boston. To save money, don't stay in town but pick a hotel slightly out of town. You should be able to find cheaper places along an MBTA (subway) route. Maybe near MIT or Harvard on the Red Line.
Thanks for the suggestion. That is a good option. Do those hotels also charge the "facility/resort fee"?
@@RenataPereiraTV It was a while ago, but the Courtyard by Marriott about a mile from Harvard I don't think had a resort fee. Depending on the time of year, Boston hotels are pricey. If you don't mind taking the train back and forth to downtown (the train ride is fairly short), they're half the price. :)
@@roachtoasties Thanks for the idea! This time we ended up staying downtown for the convenience, as we love when we have the chance to walk everywhere. But for future trips, we'll most likely check other options 🙂👍
@@RenataPereiraTV Thanks.

HAHA, thank you! 😃
Hi renata. Loved the video! Can you please tell me how much luggage can 1 passenger carry on this journey? 🙏😊
Not really sure as we were not scanned and had to take our own luggage on. Here is a link to Amtrak luggage policy...but I am not sure what they really follow as this was my first trip in this corridor.
I think you are making the right choice for not taking Acela, which usually takes 3.5hours with out of proportion fare. Hope there will be some kind of upgrade to 125mph or 150mph system which should make travel between these two cities in less than 2 hours.
Hello and thanks. Yes, I read that there is an idea to build a new high speed train connecting the 2 cities.
@@RenataPereiraTV Pray hard it will be built sooner 🙏🙏🙏.
Nice video but if the Shinkansen in Japan is a 10 on 10, what do you rate the train NYC to BOS? ...Just wondering. Cheers
True no comparison bro.
Not as fast and less modern interior design. But the fact that one can sit and work and its pure pleasure vs having to take a plane.
Great video! You should know that the Thames is not pronounced "temz" in Connecticut. It is pronounced "thames", with a TH, rhymes with James.

Renatinha hello.look i am here again
Welcome back Enoque
Which train is this old or the acela train? Is the south station close to downtown and all main attractions
South Boston train station is right downtown tho you may need an Uber to get to your hotel with bags. Otherwise, we were walking the whole time. I believe the Acela.
4:14 looks like Coop City, Bronx.
I had to look that up. I think you are right
I have travelled on Acela. It shaves off an hour on your trip. That's it. And it costs more.
Yes, it is a little bit faster but not super fast like European or Japanese trains. For us, who can work on a train, we prefer to save a little. There is talk of a faster high speed train to be built in that corridor. Lets see if they can get it off the ground.
No question that is the best train route in America even the “slow” train is Bette than other Amtrak routes. It’s all downhill from that train. Ny to Boston in no way is “long” distance
Renata: How many hours does its takes to traveled by the Train from New York City to Boston, MA. in November of 2021?
Our train took approximately 4 hours
