    For those wondering about half flips: yes you can learn to let go after the jump(which is what I personally do), but if you find that difficult, there's one other trick. If you hold free air roll (even with NO stick input; direction doesn't matter), directional air roll gets completely cancelled out, it's as if it's not bound. So you can do half flips with free air roll even while holding reverse, just as before.

    I also had air roll left on square and decided to make the switch about a week ago (moved it to l2). The first few days were rough but I'm slowly getting used to it. Biggest thing I've noticed is I'm able to grab my trigger a lot more comfortably as I no longer need to fat thumb the square button. Hopefully my air control feels normal by the start of next season so I don't lose so much mmr. Great vid man!

    Totally can agree with the little issues you mentioned after chagning Air Roll Left to L2.. I changed my settings a little earlier than you and already after some days I feel very comfortable and not want to change my Air Roll Left back to square ever again.
    Half Flips: I just made sure I have already released my finger from L2 when i jump for the half Flip, after some practise it already feels natural.
    I also tested in a training pack with a timer if the acceleration buttons affects the speed of the car in the air: Yes they do a little BUT what I discovered is that boosting has a much much bigger effect on the acceleration in the air. So if you boost trough, the Acceleration buttons have 0 effect anymore when the car is in the air. Also if you move at a higher speed anyways the acceleration buttons also have almost no effect on the speed.
    So in my opinion the advantages easily outweight the little issues that you have at the start after the change.. :)

    the lack of speed due to holding brake and throttle in the air instead of throttle is actually very significant. A good way to test it is to play dacia spring electric challenge, where some of the harder levels like level 15 are nearly impossible without holding throttle in the air and relatively easy while holding it. My friend yokes switched from kbm (without a mid air throttle bind) to controller and one of the biggest differences he noticed was the throttle, it made things like double resets way easier

    • @Gregan_Mike
      @Gregan_Mike  Před rokem +5

      I mean, Zen has it and only really uses ARL in finer control situations where people typically feather boost. When doing direct, fast aerials, one should use normal air roll mostly

    • @b3p
      @b3p Před rokem +2

      I've read and also done some testing and would like to second that when performing a flip reset, if you have throttle held down, the ball is harder to control. This makes sense because your wheels are technically driving on the ball for a fraction of a second. I struggled for months controlling the initial reset in a way where I could flip cancel for the second, but I noticed that when I stopped holding throttle my first resets were much more in control.

    • @b3p
      @b3p Před rokem +1

      @@Gregan_Mike Definitely agree that most of your flight path should be normal air roll, but in that last moment when approaching the ball, it's easier imo to get a great touch on the ball making use of the dual axis rotation w/ directional air roll. Think it's worth the loss in speed

    i thought about it for a while like 6 months ago and then went to rizzo settings with left stick for drive and aerial control standard, l1 for powerslide and standard airroll. r1 for boost. l1 for airroll left and r1 for airroll right, jump is on square, ballcam is triangle and rear view is x. i put . so far im either the same or better than i was earlier. recoveries are somehow easier for me but the rest is either the same or better than earlier. it was much easier to adjust as these were the same settings for what im used to in flight simulators, or atleast quite similar

  • @jordyvandenkieboom6667

    his settings are perfect because it doesn't require u to unbind and rebind stuff, i've been playing since 2015 with pretty much default settings and i'm so used to free air roll on L1 which i still use for recovery and small adjustments mid air.. and with his settings all i do is bind DAR to L2 and that is it, a button i already use for reversing..

    So after using this for about 3 months, I’ve found the following results:
    1. I finally achieved my goal of reaching GC in all playlists in one season (had never gotten GC in snow day, dropshot and 1v1).
    2. I hadnt white mastered directional air roll when switching from free roll to directional. I had tried using circle (B) instead at first, and I wouldn’t say that I use the analog control of it to the fullest, but it definitely helps fine tune touches in certain moments.
    3. I’ve had occasional issues mastering the timing of using L2 for brake vs. Air roll right. For example, when going for a flip reset, you need to hold both brake and air roll at the same time, but it avoid unnecessary movement, when using L2 for brake and directional air roll, you need to fully release L2 before releasing air roll, otherwise your car will move. Sometimes you want to hit directional air roll right after getting a flip, but not always. So it makes control a bit difficult at times for resets and anything that requires brake taps, like taking the ball off a wall.
    So all in all, I’d say it’s going to be meta, and would recommend it to everyone.

    Alternative ways I have considered for control schemes is the different air rolls left and right on both triggers or directional airroll on the right stick and a twinstick type set up, maybe with a secondary flip button on the backbuttons so you can hit it without your thumb.
    Just putting this out there in case this becomes meta in the next 5 years so I can point, laugh, and claim I told yall so.

You can alternatively also hold free air roll (which cancels directional air roll just by pressing it regardless of direction), which is IMO much better, especially if you have powerslide bound to it, like most people do. However, bumps are often unexpected. By the time you react to it to cancel your rotation, it already messed you up in a lot of situations. Yea you can probably get really good at it, but it's always gonna be a slight disadvantage, the way I see it

    The most OP binding for Air Roll Left and Right together is putting them both on the Right Stick. You get even more accurate fine tuning in both directions seamlessly, and it’s unbelievably intuitive. Speed flips, flicks, half flips, wall dashes….they are all soooo easy and intuitive once you get used to the bindings I’ve made for it. The only drawback is getting used to camera swivel on x,o, and triangle, but it does work.
    Bindings:
    L1 - jump
    R1 - boost
    LS Click - Camera Toggle
    RS Click - Rear View
    RS Left - Air Roll Left
    RS Right - Air Roll Right
    Square - Air Roll & Powerslide
    X - Swivel Left
    O - Swivel Right
    Triangle - Swivel Up
    By the way, one note about L2 most people don’t know. It comes into play when you make contact on a flip reset. When holding L2, you will break/reverse on the ball for the split second you make contact. It makes a noticeable difference and is generally good to do in most scenarios. As long as you are not holding R2.

    I made this change after a video from Thankavich. I've been doing it about a week now. A little background on me: I've played since early 2016, I play on steam with an xbox controller, 240fps 1080p. I'm currently a C2- GC1 in 2's and 3's and I mainly grind 3's. I'm a non-directional air roller, and I've been trying to learn directional air roll for a while. For some reason using this button has really seemed to click with me and I noticed immediate progress. I'm having the same issues as you though. My half flips are a bit wonky and my backwards recoveries have been too. It's all due to my habit of primitively holding reverse. So, far I'm liking the change though, it's something new to learn and practice that doesn't seem to be hurting my rank much.

      @Soul king still use it, still have the same opinion. My rank hasn't changed much, but if you look at my tracker you will likely notice that my rank has stayed more consistent since I switched whereas before the switch, there was huge fluctuation. I have definitely become a more methodical player in the wake of my transition, mainly due to the fact that for the first 3 weeks I was mechanically far inferior due to all of the adjustments that have to be made and habits changed. There was one point where I was involved in a slightly more competitive scenario and tried to temporarily switch back for that day, and I realized at that time that I was past the point of no return because I couldn't even operate on my old settings. So with a significant playstyle change, combined with a major dip in mechanical ability for a short time, I don't know that my rank is a good indication of if the change is good or not.
      TLDR: I'm happy with the switch and recommend it to others, but the affect to my rank has been meh, but there are other factors involved that may contribute to that.

When air dribbling you get ever so slightly more distance between you and the ball with each touch and for flip resets you get behind the ball more. Choosing between pressing throttle or brake while you're in the air makes a huge difference when performing air dribbles and they each have their own situational uses. • @mewderator6410
    @mewderator6410 Před rokem

    I do not understand why players still seem to think that the normal air roll matters besides easier wavedashing. Directional air roll is far superior to the stiff movement allowed by normal air roll so it's very surprising to see top players not use at least both directional if not all three. Both directional air rolls being bound allows you to have the same basic movement with normal air roll, just slightly less convenient as most people bound normal air roll to drift. However, lacking one of the directional air rolls limits approaches to the ball significantly depending on the scenario.
    edit: an example is very quickly getting a flip reset off the wall. trying to do so without directional air roll will be slightly slower due to the limitations of not being able to turn omnidirectionally.

    As a scrub with no pretension of matching the mechanics of pro Rocket Leaguers, let alone Zen, I prioritized my controls for comfort. That two finger grip on both bumpers and triggers doesn't work for me. I also changed move forward to the A button, because pressing the trigger fully down all the time was annoying. Would be cool if you could reverse the meaning of the trigger, so that just barely pressing it gave you full speed, and less speed as you press further down.

    If we're going to be honest this isnt going to change anyone's gameplay at all, even zen didn't know you can only partially use the trigger for a slow roll.
    Half pressing the trigger is ridiculously tedious and hardly has any benefit, you can easily do precise movements in the air without it.
    If anything it's worse than a normal setting because you are forced to be reversing in the air and it messes up your half flips. I don't recommend this at all.
