  • The Pemi Loop is a "classic" Great American Hike in New Hampshire's Pemigewasset Wilderness in the White Mountains National Forest. It begins at the Lincoln Woods Trailhead and climbs over some of the most spectacular peaks in all of the East Coast. The list of 4000 foot mountains along the trail are Flume, Liberty, Lincoln, Lafayette, Garfield, South Twin, Guyot, Bond, and Bondcliff. Some additional 4000 foot peaks can be easily obtained along the way. They are Galehead, North Twin, Zealand, and West Bond. The Pemi Loop is roughly 30 miles long and 9000 feet of elevations gain.
The two of us hiked the trail between the dates of Thursday 7/23/2020 and Sunday 7/26/2020. We started late afternoon on Thursday finding a stealth spot near the base of Flume. On Friday we woke up at 5:30 and began our traverse of Franconia Ridge summiting Flume, Liberty, Lincoln, and Lafayette. The peaks broke from the clouds just as we began summiting Flume giving us a spectacular show that you only see in the Whites. The sun was unrelenting and winds were calm. We were both thankful to have brought sun hoodies to protect us. Our second night we stealth camped again several hundred feet below the summit of Garfield. The second day was the hardest by far. The climb up South Twin is one of the hardest I've ever experienced. We were rewarded with a beautiful, flat, below treeline, traverse of the ridge to Guyot and then on to the Guyot Campsite where we camped at an overflow spot. We spent the sunset on top of West Bond and caught a very faint glimpse at Comet Neowise. The final morning saw increasing winds. We summited bond to incredible views of the higher White Mountain peaks in the clouds. As we descended to the col of Bond and Bondcliff 65 MPH winds hammered us nearly blowing us over several times. Once at the summit of Bondcliff the winds calmed as the natural curvature of the cliffs direct the winds towards the col. The final 9 miles is relatively easy and at some points monotonous. Nevertheless we made it back to the car by 2pm. An Epic Adventure.
This is only an ultralight trailer for a longer trip video yet to be released.

Good job, what was your pack weight?

Total pack weight was about 23 pounds at the start of the trail. Definitely pushing the limit of the Burn but I was pretty comfortable.

@@GreatAmericanHikes I just weighed my pack with water and food also got exactly 23lbs. After day 1 it should go down 4 or 5 pounds. Thanks.

If this hike takes you longer than 11 hours you failed

Light and fast isn't the only good option on this hike, there's something to be said for waking up on the trail the next morning in your tent lol
