    Tristan, do you want to know why I love your reviews?
    It's because you can review an anime that I would NEVER watch on my own, explain it without spoilers and make me want to watch it after you are done. This has happened serveral times, and I ended up enjoying almost all of them.
    Thank you, good sir.

      Yes, but, if all you've got is eye candy, then is it really worth sticking with it till the end? Hear me out; in my opinion it is possible to find enjoyment out of Hyouka. Its got a great art style, as stated, and it also has great character development. But beyond that, there's absolutely nothing. Its not a comedy, there's no storyline to keep you invested, the "mysteries" it seems to centre around are dull and completely uninteresting! I honestly could not stick with this anime till the end because it was so uninteresting, so how could I recommend it to anyone!?

    • @elisapride7729
      @elisapride7729 Před 8 lety +5

      Awlorein well,you could recommend it to someone who you think could like it,it's not the best anime ever,but we all have different tastes and opinions and because this anime is very far away from being the worst there will be people who like it

    • @Awlorein
      @Awlorein Před 8 lety +2

      Elisa Pride Absolutely, it had my attention for a while and I love the characters, but the mysteries/story that I had to sit through were uninteresting. I may go back and watch it just because of the characters!

    i mostly enjoyed this show because it took out the mystery genre and made it peaceful.
    since most mysteries have something to do with either murder or crime, or just something straight up fantasy.
    all these mysteries in hyouka were just childish things to think about and never had anything that REALLY mattered.
    with that, houtarou is one of the most amazing characters i've ever seen. ''if i dont have to do it, i wont. If i do have to do it, make it quick'' best quote for life.

  • @zenoDARC
    @zenoDARC Před 9 lety +255

    This is one of my fav animes of all time. I personally regarded it as a mystery anime over all its other underlying genres but I understand what your saying. It is so much more than what we could currently describe describe it as. I wasn't aware that this wasn't licensed yet and that equally baffles me and upsets me. This was a beautiful and intelligent anime.
    There is one episode that was written so perfectly that if you had any doubts a person could possibly solve these mysteries in the manner that the protag does it dispels all those doubts. At least it did for me although I could see others reacting to it in a completely opposite way.Without spoiling lets just say that without actually going anywhere He solves a mystery by hearing a message... If you've seen the anime you probably know what I'm referring to. Imo this was the best episode in the anime because while at first I was completely skeptical that any could solve this mystery logically, every single step they wen't through to prove their theory made complete sense. Which is more than I could say for Detective Conan once you start getting into the later episodes around the 100's and maybe even before that.
    Watch his anime if you haven't already. You will not be disappointed.

    I have this bizarre relationship with KyoAni where I simultaneously want them to make second season of EVERYTHING they've ever made, but also do new stuff. For example, a second season of Hyouka would have made me happier than I can really admit, but if it came at the cost of, say, Amagi Brilliant Park, then I don't know how I'd feel. Point is: I love KyoAni far more than a man should be able to love an animation studio. Thanks for the review, Arkada!

      loreer123 lol, that's very true. He's really the only one out of the whole Podtaku/Jtaku cast that still uploads reviews and to be quite honest even in the whole anime community on YT. Most of the big reviews usually do episode or chapters reviews. Of course there are some that do full series reviews they just don't have that big of fan base Arkada has been able to achieve.

    It's kinda depressing when an anime doesn't get licensed. Sure, you can still watch it anywhere on the internet if you want to, but you know there is this satisfying feeling of actually owning the series on DVD/BD. But I guess, as the philosopher Jagger once said, you can't always get what you want.

    FYI: Hyouka is available for purchase on Amazon. Also, you can stream it on Hulu. At long last, we can legally enjoy this show.
    (This is in US. Not sure about other countries.)
    I loved this series because it's different. As Arkada says, Hyouka is a very enjoyable slice of life anime with mystery elements. This is the best description, in one sentence, that I've found so far. The characters are likeable once you get to know them. The story arcs are interesting. I think it's worth the watch. Give it a few episodes & decide for yourself.

  • @eclipsesonic
    @eclipsesonic Před 6 lety +8

    I love the fact that Hyouka isn't your typical mystery show. It's not intense, neither does it contain any action scenes or on the edge of your seat stuff, but its determination and ability to get you interested and invested in smaller scale mystery story-lines and arcs makes it feel refreshing and different.
    My personal favourite mystery plot was the movie murder case (episodes 8-11). Not only was the case itself very compelling, but also Oreki's theory as to the identity of the murderer was ingenious and was someone that never crossed my mind.
    I love the way Oreki's deductions were displayed visually. It made things even more interesting. I also grew attached to the 4 main characters as the show progressed. Their chemistry and interactions together are a lot of fun.
    On top of all that, the animation is absolutely gorgeous in this Anime, but what else would you expect from KyoAni? ;)

  • @guillermofeijoo7797
    @guillermofeijoo7797 Před 3 lety +3

    I just wanna add that Hyouka comes from a novel series, about which 6 volumes have been published with a 7th coming in the future. The series is far from over, as the anime only covers the first 4 volumes (and a chapter of volume 6 strangely enough). Additionally, the anime series has an incredible amount of extra content in CDs, so much so and with such incedible quality that it overshadows so many other animes out there. It is a shame that most people don´t know about this extra content, as it is extremely fun and comical, putting the characters in extremely bizarre situations or twisting the narrative of a particular episode to give yet another perspective on what could have happnened. If you like the show, go and head over to baka tsuki where you can find all this stuff.

    Very impressive review! I think you effectively communicated how strangely entertaining this series is. You can start the show just to see the great drawings, animation, and music it contains. I feel it compares to the way I watch Miyazaki films and it can feel like the plot just gets drowned beneath all of the amazing artwork that gets made for it. It's like the plot is just an excuse, or at rather a theme, to create all these great pieces of art.

      Awlorein The plot is usually nothing more than just a secondary aspect. The real enjoyment of this show, in my opinion, comes from the characters, the occasional humor, the gorgeous animation and the enjoyable soundtrack. The mysteries are something that might be hard to get into for most, but if you can manage through those even if you can't get into them, then it should be a great watch. But it's your choice as to whether or not you continue it.

      Hatsune Miku Because there's a lot to talk about with those shows, and not everyone's familiar with them. With Lucky Star, what is there to say? It's a show where girls talk about shit, you either love it or you hate it. The entire review would boil down to "watch episode 2 (ep 1 is a little too boring), if you like it, keep watching, if you don't, stop right there." It's simple even by KyoAni SOL standards. I love LS, but even I don't think it needs a review.

Despite all the dramatic atmospheres that come up, despite everything being turned into a mystery, despite my constant want to watch more, I always felt relaxed as if nothing was that big of a deal and that I could just relax and take it all in calmly. Hyouka is a new personal favorite of mine. It doesn't trod too heavily on any genre, it has character development and there's no blatant snip-offs in the plot. In fact, the ending is pretty damn good. Looking pretty doesn't hurt it either. :) A pleasant anime with a slow pace.

  • @urboi4125

    For anyone who hasn't seen this anime, it's about 4 school students (actually just one guy who does all the work) who solves everyday mysteries that have no point. For example: 'who stole the cookies that were left in the room?' Personally I struggled to like this anime. It focused on being a mystery anime but the mysteries were not worth solving since they were everyday mysteries. So it must be a slice of life, school anime. But when I look at it that way, it's disappointing. When I watch a slice of life, school anime I expect romance. But this anime lacks that. It has moments that hints to a relationship between the 2 main characters and romantic encounters, but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend people to watch this since it's quite boring and disappointing but unless you are a big fan of slice of life then go ahead.

    I always thought of Hyouka as a character drama that looked at how assumptions can change reality, effecting events and people long after the assumption is made. The show displays how holding an assumption can hurt those you're closest to. This is especially shown in the movie arc where the MC feels betrayed by the person he trusted and his own assumptions. Showing that his assumptions affected his conclusion, ultimately making it invalid even though it fitted perfectly into the context. He then feels irritation and distrust for the person who seemingly lead him to these assumptions. Ultimately leading to a rift between the two that will likely take a long time to heal.

    Speaking of perspective... Ever wondered why Oreki is so captivated by Chitanda and her seemingly almost magic words of "I'm curious!"? Ever wondered why Oreki seems to occasionally have his own personal surreal mental aside and uses it to visualize a scenario or problem?
    It's actually been put forth as a theory that this isn't an imagination ability of him... But that Oreki is actually "suffering" from *_psychosis_*. It's not as clear when we just see what Oreki is imagining in his head (through the visualization that we see as abstract/stylized animation segments), but you do see it when he's talking to Chitanda and - in real time - he starts visually hallucinating around her. You can see the example of veins growing out and holding him captive. In another scene in the anime, Chitanda starts saying "I'm curious!" and it starts repeating to Oreki - then miniature little Chitandras all start appearing and echoing it to him.
    So it's possible that these are not images from an active imagination, but a mental condition. Not only one which causes him to be drawn towards and listen to Chitanda because of his subconscious influencing it through visual hallucinations, but also one that helps him visualize problems and solve them in an abstract manner.

However, I can't really get myself to perceive this as more than just a SoL/Mystery hybrid, despite the plethora of experimental turns this show took as it progressed, as it's just mysteries done for the purpose of developing a character.
