The reason only 216 worked instead of 218 real majority is because 2 members either abstained or weren’t present. When someone abstains or is absent the majority needs to pass motions decrease by that number of absences or abstainments (or non voting).
Pelosi + one Democrat who's husband just died in a plane crash (Alaska rep) are the two that didn't vote
So if 217 were absent, then they'd only need 1 vote for it to pass right?
no vote or absence is a way to go along with the majority but not have the paperwork for it.
its a very common strategy, usually with the approval of leadership.
For example imagine a bill that would pass regardless of your vote but will make you look weak to your centrist constituents.
A congress person would also not want to vote for/against it to isolate the "base".
A congress person actually not being able to vote for something where their vote is pivotal is almost unheard of.
Regardless he is ousted that is what matters. He is not suppose to be in that position anyway.

Do my stepbrother whom had made a career in the army & had to leave his growing children including his newborn baby & wife & go to traine Ukrainians will not get paid how will his wife & children pay their bills & eat! Politicians are paid period( term limits should be set to 2 terms 5 years severance pay & get & pay for your own insurance then go on Medicare insurance pay into your own retirement & go back to work if you’re not retirement age!)? My retirement was used as short term disability insurance they said they had do my retirement is gone I worked 4/5 mandatory double shifts per week -(64/80 hours/week & after 2 overtime’s it all went to Uncle Sam) so I paid my ss in plus some as an RN for 30 years that always worked overtime my 501 k was a little over $20,000 after 22 years at one hospital in the operating room. So let them do it! The only 2 government officials to draw a pension & have insurance for life are the president & the Vice president of the United States !!!!

How is he going against the government, when his career was in government? He was the person in charge of one of the chambers of our government, how is that going against the government?
It wasn't the government that took him down, you're using spooky language to make it seem more duplicitous and pernicious. He got taken down because he had a 5 seat majority, and more than 5 people from his party voted against him. It's very simple, it's not some spooky conspiracy. He was the one that allowed for a single member to bring forth a resolution to remove the speaker, that itself was historic, the reason it doesn't happen is because the 54 speakers before him to some extent had a better situation, but crucially they unified their caucus better than McCarthy did. I live in his district, I've actually met him in person, don't be spreading disingenuous characterizations of his downfall. It rests on him and caucus, he failed to unify them, so they want a new leader.
I'm proud of him too for standing up for what he believes in, and for standing up to that side of the party. But end of the day it is what it is. He isn't speaker because he "earned it", it's a privilege, and you only hold it as long as your majority holds.
God will honor him for what he did. I admire the man
