    I remember reading an old magazine article from the 1960s where a 67 GTO made 200 rwhp after tuning so 200 from yours is strong. BTW, one of our family cars was a 66 4 door hardtop Wildcat with a 401 4bbl. I loved that car, and the 64 2 door Catalina before it.

    What goes around comes around for that dude that screwed you up. Try to forget about it or it will eat you alive. I have seen people get ate up with hate in my life and it kills people, very slowly. Peace. That 401 sounds like an American V8 for sure.

    Bro, one thing I have learned about building engines is that you have plenty of knowledge to do it yourself. If there are any tips or tricks, we have the Internet now, so all that is available to you. I feel for you. Only one time did I have a shop rebuild an engine in my life. They knew how important an engine it was too. They screwed up everything, and they build NASCAR engines. Seems they were funding their NASCAR by giving the shaft to all the customers. Never had any problems with engines I built myself. Yeah, sometimes it took a long time, but I was younger then and it did not matter, it was done right.

    i'm 62. when i was a teenager i bought a 1966 buick wildcat 4 dr. with only 19,000 miles and a beautiful 401 nailhead. i remember spending hours admiring the appearance of that V-8. the thing is, i distinctly remember it having almost aqueduct like exhaust manifolds, each side having two arches. yet i don't see that on any of the 401's on youtube, even '66 wildcats. can someone help me out with this?
    i think i have a photo of the engine that i took around 1982 but i haven't yet been able to find it. if i do i will post it.

    200+hp SAE at the wheels is pretty good when you factor in turning the ST400, 9 3/8” rear and all the accessories for the conversion from gross hp. Hard to find good machine shops nowadays that build non Chevy small blocks.

    I like the shiny green you chose rather than the duller satin and flat green colors. The shine give the motor a bit of a sparkle of reflected light I like to see in the engine bay.

    Great story! Can relate to the frustration you experienced. Had my 425 machined by a shop who specialized in small block ford n chevy mainly. They called it a boat anchor and once i had it running it had all kinds of more sludge in the coolant passages from their hot tank job. Remedied that by running tide detergent through the cooling system. Long story short this engine still runs today as this happened in the.late 80s to me.. Thanks for an indepth inspiring heads up video for those of us with oddball engines.

    That sucks the guy sank it too much.glad she is finally running.I’m still putting mine back together .I have a 63 Buick Electra sports couple.the motor was seized.I got a 401 out of a 64 wildcat that had 29,000 original miles .I took it apart to rebuild it anyway

    I love the engine rumble and exhaust sound of that big wildcat! The big low to mid range torque on power of that old traditional American V8. Not the wheeze and blatty discordant noise of the newer so called low restriction 6000 rpm v8 noise makers so popular today.

    I do screw in plugs on everything but they make short ones or you machine them down. Sorry you had this happen.

    Those 401 nailhead engines are strong! I have a 65 Wildcat 401 runs like a champ. I had the warerpump and hoses recently done but I noticed a few weeks after this work that antifreeze settles on top of the intake manifold after I let her run what could side this? Nice video!

      Are we talking about antifreeze settling on top of the intake manifold where the carburetor sits, or antifreeze settling on the "top" of the engine in the valley under the intake manifold?

    This is a shot in the dark, but I’m looking for a self adjuster actuating link for the front drums on a 1967 Buick Electra. It’s the skinny rod that goes from the actuating pivot, to the anchor at the top. Do you possibly know where to order this part? All I can find are springs. I’m also trying to find a drum as well. Thank you in advance.

      There is a backing plate on eBay right now that includes the rod. You can find it by searching "LH FRONT DRUM BRAKE BACKING PLATE 1965-1970 BUICK." I also recommend a drum from eBay, then take it to your local brake shop for machining.

    There must be a very big difference between those original SAE gross ponies at the crank with no accessories installed and the SAE net ponies at the rear tire ground contact patch. Looks like your losing close to 30% of those ponies on the way to the dinner for that hamburger. That’s seems to be a lot of power loss in the driveline.

      With a 1963 and the Dynoflow, that's out of my wheelhouse. I'd recommend talking to the guys at Centerville Auto Repair, Russ or Matt. They are experts and sell all the adapters out there. I know I've read of 700R4s and 4L60E/4L80Es being adapted, but not only is there the adaption that has to take place, there are firewall and floor pan clearance issues that need to be accounted for.

      Don"t quote me on this, but I think the flow for the AFB was ~600 for the Buicks. The dual-quad came with 2 ~450s@@1964buick

      Absolutely. Depending on the year and the make of the Buick motor, they have been bluish, green, silver, and red.
