Best Owl for Woodpecker Deterrent - Ugold Solar Motion Sensor Owl vs Dalen Fake Owl Scarecrow Decoy

  • We tried 2 different owls as a woodpecker deterrent - the Ugold Solar Powered Garden Owl with Detection, Flashing Eyes, Rotating Head, Realistic Hoots, etc. and the Dalen Fake Owl Scarecrow Decoy that does not have a motion detector. The Ugold owl with the motion sensor and hoots was the clear winner. I'm not sure how well it works for other animals but, as I explain in this video, it worked for us to prevent the woodpecker from pecking holes in our house. LOL, that's pretty much what happened with the bigger one that didn't move!

    Thanks for your review of these 2 products. Very useful information. I will be trying the Ugold one to rid my yard of chipmunks this summer.

      I'm glad you found it useful. I haven't tried it for chipmunks but hopefully it will work. Good luck!

    I just bought the stationary owl. However, i take him in at night and move him to a different location every morning. I am not home to see if it works. I suppose i'll know for sure this weekend. Did you move your's? I always do it under cover of darkness

      Thanks for the question Toup. I've had it about a year and a half now and it still works fine. However, it hasn't been out for a while since the woodpeckers have not gone back there recently. It definitely worked for us and I'm glad to hear you are happy with yours as well. I hope it lasts for many years.

    I have to mount the unit up high correct to be effective, so how does that work hmmm?

    • @catsandkilos
      @catsandkilos  Před 4 měsíci

      I'm not sure how high it has to be to work. For me it worked just by resting on the brick between the lower part of the house (walkout basement) and where it changes to siding for the main floor and up - there is a brick lip. This was still below where the woodpecker was making the holes but it worked well anyway. I'm not sure what your house is like but if you have a retaining wall that might work. I don't know if it would work just on the ground though. I guess it depends how high up they are making the holes. Good luck. Hope it works for you otherwise you may need to get creative with the mounting or find another method.

    Do you think this would help keep a Owl or hawks away from my yard?
    I have a 5 and 10 lb pups? Had 2 scary encounters! Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you kindly.

      I wish I could give you a definitive answer Cindy but I'm afraid I'd just be guessing. However, I did look up this question on the internet and apparently Owl decoys may help deter both hawks and other owls (this is from the information I quickly looked up but I'm not sure how effective it would really be, esp. if the predator is very hungry). Scarecrows were also mentioned as a possible deterrent. It would be my guess that this may help but I'm not sure I would trust it to protect my pups. If you have no other choice, I'd consider getting 2 of them - the ones that move and also make noise - as well as a scarecrow but I'd personally still not be totally comfortable with this (esp. for the 5 lb pup). Sorry I couldn't be of more help but I hope this somewhat answers your question. I wish you the best of luck with whatever method you choose.
