      Idk I think Charles telling Diana "Jolly well done" after giving birth to William is pretty high up there.

    This review was fantastic!! Couldn't agree with what you said more! I loved this show SO much. Just fantastically fun and campy and just pretty damn cool. Jeanna De Waal is a fantastic Diana and the whole cast works properly hard to make something actually really pretty- the ensemble is especially incredible. It's rocky, uplifting, heart-breaking, funny and totally ridiculous. Think the music's great, lyrics are SO on-the-nose but still fun, and then costuming is astoundingly good- all the onstage changes are properly, properly cool- especially in 'Pretty, Pretty Girl' and 'I Will'. Not gonna teach you anything new about Diana, really but still just a nice and different addition to the mass of work inspired by her life. Lots of people hate it beyond belief but I've listened to the soundtrack 6ish times and seen it a good 5 times now and just love it to bits. Its totally mad, stupid in-fact, but in the absolute best possible way. :)

    I like a lot of the music and I love the act one finale with all her costume quick changes. Yes, a lot of the lyrics are unpolished, but once I realized they didn’t seem to be going for the serious musical we might have all been expecting, I was fully on board for a campy British soap opera love triangle. I think a lot of people were just determined to hate this no matter what and I don’t understand that attitude. Having said that I’ve always had a soft spot for flops so what do I know?

    Though I’d say without the visual part it probably changes the impression of it a lot. Though it’s possible it’s for the better 🤣
    Like just to name a few things you miss out on: The ensembles very aggressive dancing between Charles and the Queen during “worst job in England”, Camilla and Charles just starting to make out during the second chorus of “I miss you most on Sundays” and just...the entry of James Hewitt.

      @meganx6726 Před 2 lety +2

      I honestly don't think an epilogue is needed. And as for abrupt..her death in real life was actually abrupt. We all know the legacy...but it is also spelled out in the musical right before her death. Plus, they end it with the sung line: "The people who will change the world... are not the ones you think will change the world." What a great message.

    Something I haven't seen anyone bring up yet is the fact that the melody you mentioned as coming up loads of time is also in 'Memphis' (It's in 'That's Not Possible' on the 'I danced with the devil when he played that song' line, among others), which is by the same composers.

      @@MickeyJoTheatre My personal opinion is that the questionable lyrics in 'Diana' really shouldn't have come as much of a surprise, as it's not like the lyrics in 'Memphis' were that great either. I think that when it was over here, having an incredible cast covered a lot of the show's sins 😅

  • @lillianward2810
    @lillianward2810 Před 2 lety +1

    I saw this on Broadway right before it closed and it was the definition of the famous criticism of mega-musicals- every single costume change got a round of applause. The melodies were meh and the lyrics were bad (though it sounds like they were edited following the filmed version). It could have worked better if they leaned into the camp more, especially in the merch. The Dress song will have a great life in drag shows, I am sure.

    Hi Mickey Jo, I am very disappointed with you criticizing a show that you have not seen, including it's music which you have not heard and seen in context with the show. You have got the opening of the show totally wrong. Diana is a great Musical. When you watch it on Netflix, there was no audience (in the recording) so you won't get the best impression of how the show plays with an audience. It would be like watching Everybody's Talking About Jamie with no audience. It's unusual that they have the Queen singing, but lets just put that down to poetic license (That's Show-business). All the songs are quirky. Ever the scene where Diana passes is done so nicely, I cried. There are 4 instant dress changes on Diana which was amazing. I think a lot of the people who have criticized the show have in fact not seen the show. I went to an hour long bidding show in London a couple of years ago which was staged for it's backers (I have nothing to do with the show at all), not all the songs were featured and there was a narrator to link the scenes together. It was great seeing the show being performed live. This should take off in the US once people start to see it. Not too sure about the UK, planned to open in 2022, but it will all depend on word of mouth. I really enjoyed it. By contrast, I watched your recent review on the new cut down and revised and cheaper version of Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theater. A show where one of the best songs is mimed, and you were OK with that????????? People going to see Phantom today are seeing a cheaper production, but paying more for the privilege. You have disapointed me.

    • @MickeyJoTheatre
      @MickeyJoTheatre  Před 2 lety +10

      I'm sorry to hear that - I certainly don't want anyone to feel disappointed.
      Bear in mind this was a reaction to the first time listening and not a review, at this time I hadn't yet watched the show on Netflix, my Review will be coming soon as I mention in this video and you may be pleasantly surprised.
      As a side note, value for money and ticket prices are something I rarely talk about in my reviews but certainly something audiences should and will consider for themselves.
