With the Musical Theatre community up in arms on social media, there was only so long I could keep myself from giving in to temptation and listening to DIANA The Musical.
In the first of two videos about this controversial new show I'll be reacting to the entire Original Broadway Cast Recording, check it out and let me know your thoughts on the score in the comments section!

Unquestionably the best line in the musical:
“Charlie thanks for all you do...but right now, you're _blocking our view!”_
Idk I think Charles telling Diana "Jolly well done" after giving birth to William is pretty high up there.
Diana's actress is actually British so she does have an advantage over her American castmates!
That "AH-AH-AH-AH" drove me nuts it was like a fever dream that kept rocking up.
🤣🤣🤣 yes
The musical was a mood. An like in a chaotic neutral way.
I just have to say: I have never ever, ever seen a Broadway production and Diana: The Musical was my first. I've seen it more than 3 times now, listened to the songs even more and I still cry every single time. I love it!!!
Thanks for this. After all the vitriol -- an honest, fair, funny, and thoughtful reaction to our efforts. Stay safe and well!
PAUL?
To be perfectly honest i really enjoyed it the choreography enhances the numbers and raises the energy
The costumes are phenomenal and the costume changes are ✨another level✨
I personally think watching it changes the whole show it’s a really amazing watch
Is the "Homewrecker Parker Bowles" for me lol
I don't know why I bursted out laughing when you censored the F*ck you dress bit, but I did. I guess it just the constantly beeping that got it. XD
I for one fully support Charles modulating every song so we get more belting
can you imagine if the real Charles belted like this
“Perhaps this girl can turn him into a rocker!”
“I don’t like your chances.”
And now this dude is your actual monarch. How is reality real?
This was definitely one of your funniest reviews 💀
This review was fantastic!! Couldn't agree with what you said more! I loved this show SO much. Just fantastically fun and campy and just pretty damn cool. Jeanna De Waal is a fantastic Diana and the whole cast works properly hard to make something actually really pretty- the ensemble is especially incredible. It's rocky, uplifting, heart-breaking, funny and totally ridiculous. Think the music's great, lyrics are SO on-the-nose but still fun, and then costuming is astoundingly good- all the onstage changes are properly, properly cool- especially in 'Pretty, Pretty Girl' and 'I Will'. Not gonna teach you anything new about Diana, really but still just a nice and different addition to the mass of work inspired by her life. Lots of people hate it beyond belief but I've listened to the soundtrack 6ish times and seen it a good 5 times now and just love it to bits. Its totally mad, stupid in-fact, but in the absolute best possible way. :)
Thanks for that. I noticed that Netflix was showing this, and frankly have no interest in watching it myself but I'm very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts, especially after watching you jive to the cast recording. I'm so grateful to have found your channel. Thanks
If you already have a Netflix subscription, watch it for the decent costume and set design. The choreography also isn't bad..it's just bad when you think about what they're dancing to
@@NairAthul thanks for your thoughts.
Thank you for this and I can’t wait for the full review!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I live for your reaction videos! 🤣 They are so on point! 👌
I was watching this while eating and I kept having to stop because I was laughing so much, this review was hilarious 😂
Love this review! I honestly felt like "Happiness / Simply Breathe" was very emotional, and we started to see Diana's struggle/pain etc multiple times during the musical.
Omg have the same shirt! I will never stop begging them to film the inheritance. Best 8 hours of theater I’ve been too.
I'm holding out hope for a netflix miniseries adaptation! 🤞
Loving this content! 😍
Well done! Thank uuuu!
Charles sounds like an AliExpress Aaron Tveit, which (only by proxy) makes him audibly more endearing than he should be.
“Sad British Hamilton” pretty sure Six already has that title
I had rather heavy Evita flashbacks.
Brilliant review 😂 I am still unsure if I want to watch it or not though haha. Oh I just got to the dress song 🤣
Your reaction is hilarious and I needed this today...10 months late.
Can't wait for the review of the pro-shot!
I like a lot of the music and I love the act one finale with all her costume quick changes. Yes, a lot of the lyrics are unpolished, but once I realized they didn’t seem to be going for the serious musical we might have all been expecting, I was fully on board for a campy British soap opera love triangle. I think a lot of people were just determined to hate this no matter what and I don’t understand that attitude. Having said that I’ve always had a soft spot for flops so what do I know?
Thank you so much I really need more reviews of this musical.
Though I’d say without the visual part it probably changes the impression of it a lot. Though it’s possible it’s for the better 🤣
Like just to name a few things you miss out on: The ensembles very aggressive dancing between Charles and the Queen during “worst job in England”, Camilla and Charles just starting to make out during the second chorus of “I miss you most on Sundays” and just...the entry of James Hewitt.
I’ve got this movie on my watch list and can’t wait to watch it.
I just listened to this soundtrack and loved it earlier
I’m really going to need to watch it now…although I might make sure I have a cushion to hide behind if it gets too cringed!
I completely LOVE Diana The Musical. It’s amazing. I love every costume the woman who plays Diana wears. They’re absolutely stunning. I also love all the songs.
I absolutely adore this musical
It's really gonna be known as the Sad British Hamilton right. That makes me sad. It really feels like they barely watched a documentary for context.
It’s not even British, it’s by a completely American creative team!
The musical is definitely worth watching! I did 3 times and like it more and more!
Me too
i LOVE this musical!!!!
Thanks!
Aw, I miss this slightly more aggressive MickeyJo that would tell characters in musicals to punch people in the throat! 🤣
This video is much better than that show.
Sad British Hamilton, stooopp I cackled 😂😂😂😂
This is absolutely the BEST!! You are fabulous and have made me laugh so hard! I actually forced myself to watch the entire show...It is beyond bad...I am absolutely blown away by the awfulness of it!! I felt embarrassed for the cast. JUDY KAYE...Tony winner for pity sake! How could she possibly have thought it was a good show!!! Every single song sounds exactly the same....the choreography is laughable....I just have no more words......
There's little art to writing dialogue and lyrics where characters are always announcing what they're feeling. Still, I'm going to stream DIANA, THE MUSICAL since you've piqued my interest. Thanks!
I agree that the ending was abrupt. There should have been some epilogue about Diana's legacy.
I honestly don't think an epilogue is needed. And as for abrupt..her death in real life was actually abrupt. We all know the legacy...but it is also spelled out in the musical right before her death. Plus, they end it with the sung line: "The people who will change the world... are not the ones you think will change the world." What a great message.
We need someone to create a gif, of the first couple of seconds of this video. 😉
i should not watch this while drinking wine i just laughed so hard i got it on my top
I got a sort of “Chess” vibe from the music and staging. Give it a chance and I think most viewers will end up with a positive take.
“My ginger haired son” and “better than a Guinness, better than a wank” were some of the most bonkers lyrics! Xx czcams.com/video/D1zLbjsqEpA/video.html
It’s marginally better watching it, as you get to see the quick changes, which are the one thing it does really really well.
Having watched it since filming this video I very much agree with this! The first quick change had me SHOOK!
It sounds bloody awful and why even make a musical? Please just Let her rest in peace.
"Did the Queen just riff?" My exact thought when I first saw this show. 🥲
I totally love Jeanna de Waal since Carrie. She was the bright spot in Diana, obviously.
Jeanna De Waal (Diana) is British
I never knew that! I am now less impressed by how well she maintains the accent 😅
Oh don't you DARE compare anything in this sh*tshow with "Rebecca"! lol
Something I haven't seen anyone bring up yet is the fact that the melody you mentioned as coming up loads of time is also in 'Memphis' (It's in 'That's Not Possible' on the 'I danced with the devil when he played that song' line, among others), which is by the same composers.
I've heard this from a friend! I never actually saw Memphis so I missed that one!
@@MickeyJoTheatre My personal opinion is that the questionable lyrics in 'Diana' really shouldn't have come as much of a surprise, as it's not like the lyrics in 'Memphis' were that great either. I think that when it was over here, having an incredible cast covered a lot of the show's sins 😅
I saw this on Broadway right before it closed and it was the definition of the famous criticism of mega-musicals- every single costume change got a round of applause. The melodies were meh and the lyrics were bad (though it sounds like they were edited following the filmed version). It could have worked better if they leaned into the camp more, especially in the merch. The Dress song will have a great life in drag shows, I am sure.
Costumes, set and all that jazz was superb. It was just all the shit on the top that kind of let it down with the exception of James Hewitt who made me belly laugh when he appeared bare chested and ginger cos y'know... James Heeeewiiiitt 🏇
Sounds like bland, generic Disney reject music, a la Wicked.
PLEASE REVIEW TREVOR THE MUSICAL’

12:22
Why is this a musical? Just of doing this to make money. I'm sure she wouldn't approve of it. Why not let her rest in peace as she was basically killed and will never be proved
Mickey what do you mean Charles is “modulating” all the time???
The song keeps changing key while he's singing - not actually his fault, he didn't write it, I'm just being silly!
I got the campy, soapy tone and I get what they aimed for BUT REALLY ALL OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY ARE IN THE CHOCKHOLD OF IPs AND KNOWN CHARACTERS and squeezing their original stories into it
Sounds hideous! Why can't creatives be a little more creative? Thanks for your reactions. I certainly won't be seeing it (or hearing it).
The trailer looks terrible
The lyrics are the worst part by far followed by the sameness of so many of the songs. Followed by the simplistic trite way the story is told. A mess.
I've not even heard of this
LOL! I shut it off after 13 minutes. And that was being kind. It was trying so hard to be Evita but lacks the soul and the dimension to do so. I would say this is definitely another 1980's Carrie if not worse. A total disaster!
The decision to make this musical was… uh… a decision.
I actually really liked the movie on Netflix. Don't hate me.
Sounds deadfall and awful and I won’t be watching it on Netflix!
I was going to watch Diana, but after reading reviews and the lame lyrics, I will pass.
I feel really uncomfortable listening to this. It feels really exploitative of Diana in a way that The Crown somehow managed not to.
I can't decide if the music or the commentary is more annoying...wait a minute, it...it...it's the commentary
Such suspense! Glad you worked it out though, I'd suggest listening on Spotify rather than watching Reaction videos, then you won't need to listen to my thoughts 😅
Hi Mickey Jo, I am very disappointed with you criticizing a show that you have not seen, including it's music which you have not heard and seen in context with the show. You have got the opening of the show totally wrong. Diana is a great Musical. When you watch it on Netflix, there was no audience (in the recording) so you won't get the best impression of how the show plays with an audience. It would be like watching Everybody's Talking About Jamie with no audience. It's unusual that they have the Queen singing, but lets just put that down to poetic license (That's Show-business). All the songs are quirky. Ever the scene where Diana passes is done so nicely, I cried. There are 4 instant dress changes on Diana which was amazing. I think a lot of the people who have criticized the show have in fact not seen the show. I went to an hour long bidding show in London a couple of years ago which was staged for it's backers (I have nothing to do with the show at all), not all the songs were featured and there was a narrator to link the scenes together. It was great seeing the show being performed live. This should take off in the US once people start to see it. Not too sure about the UK, planned to open in 2022, but it will all depend on word of mouth. I really enjoyed it. By contrast, I watched your recent review on the new cut down and revised and cheaper version of Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theater. A show where one of the best songs is mimed, and you were OK with that????????? People going to see Phantom today are seeing a cheaper production, but paying more for the privilege. You have disapointed me.
I'm sorry to hear that - I certainly don't want anyone to feel disappointed.
Bear in mind this was a reaction to the first time listening and not a review, at this time I hadn't yet watched the show on Netflix, my Review will be coming soon as I mention in this video and you may be pleasantly surprised.
As a side note, value for money and ticket prices are something I rarely talk about in my reviews but certainly something audiences should and will consider for themselves.
It’s a reaction video and it’s fine
It’s not just in the new version that that scene is mimed, that’s been the case for years. To do with how difficult that part would be to do 8 times a week from a stamina point of view.
@@danielrobinson7350 yes I heard that but didn’t notice from the up top
Thanks!
