    I think you are missing the point when talking about the original collection. Yes Springbank released it as a collection, but their ethos was always for people to drink it. They never meant it to sit on the shelf. Secondly back then people weren't instantly flipping, it wasn't a thing back then. All you are doing is commenting on a recent Springbank trend. Macbeth a cynical release to collectors. Don't make it out to be more than it is

      I agree totally the market is very different now and the nature of collectors has changed too. But by releasing 6 bottles as a series, and incentivising collecting the full set (i.e. with the minis) they are clearly trying to push multiple sales to a single customer. i.e. it's not just about the whisky in the bottle but the whisky series. Sure SB are not as gimmicky as many, but they sure do like to let people know their bottles are limited editions, lol. With regards to the Macbeth series I love it - and I will say more on this soon...

      @@MarkLittler I'm not saying they weren't pushing sales towards a single customer, I'm saying that it wasn't with the intent of them sitting on a shelf for investment and back then Springbank wasn't seen as an investment anyway. Unlikely there were many people back then who actually thought this is going to be a money maker. More likely they were the collecting type that like to see complete shelves.

      @@blindtomuk Exactly - series like this are designed to appeal to collectors, rather than simply drinkers. You can very easily be both, but collecting is a bug 🤣 The small part of the market who say whisky is 'SOLELY' for drinking misses the fact that people are massively conditioned to collect and the producers know this.
      There are many books that cover this from various perspectives in great detail.
      For an anthropological perspective there is Susan Pearce's "Collecting in Contemporary Practice" (1998), which is an examination of collecting in the modern world and what it means for individuals and societies.
      In psychology, Russell Belk's 1995 paper "Collecting in a Consumer Society" looks at the act of collecting as a way for individuals to establish identity, make sense of the world, and negotiate social relationships.
      From a historical perspective, Werner Muensterberger's "Collecting: An Unruly Passion" (1994) analyzes the motivations behind intense collecting behavior, drawing from historical, literary, and psychoanalytic sources.
      Lol - I know this is getting deep for a comment but this is essentailly what I based my Masters on 🤣
      So coming back to your original point I very much doubt Springbank JUST wanted people to drink it as they were making something appeal to a different part of peoples psyches.
      So in summary they might not have been purchased as an investment, but were sold as a collection which is a different drive/action to being sold as a bottle of whisky to drink.
      And p.s. I used chat GPT for the specific refereneces, don't judge 🤣

    You also have to take inflation into account. 1450 pounds in 2001 is worth more than 3000 today...still a great investment...but about half as good as you stated

    A Video to the 100th year Anniversary Whisky of Suntory ?
    Are they worth buying as an investment ? Especially the 18y.o ones ? They're pretty expensive with prices abover 1000 bucks, is it realistic to hope their prces will nly go up a significant amount in the future ?

      I picked up a Hakushu 12 100th Ed in Japan for about $100 in June. Combination advantageous exchange rate and the department store might have mistakenly marked it at the price of a normal Hakushu 12. Got my Yamazaki 12 100th Ed back in the states for $300 later in the summer.
      I can’t speak to the 18YO 100th Ed bottles and their starting prices of over $1000. However, given that many of the limited edition Suntory bottles go for $3000+, I’d think a 3x multiple over the standard releases is a baseline. So if Yamazaki 18 sells for $800, the 100th Edition version would eventually sell for $2400+.

    I couldn't believe that a Whisky shop near me was selling Springbank 10 from this year for £250 and Springbank 15 from this year for £500. 😂 I told him on auction that the 10 could be bought for £80 and the 15 for about £115/130. Also said you can buy at retail for RRP, as I did.

      @@MarkLittler I'm 100% serious. I'm in the UK. I thought I'd ask in the shop Westbourne Wines as they specialise in single malts, the shop isn't listed on the Springbank website as a distributer but they had loads of whiskies in the window and wall full of whisky. They only had Springbank 10 and 15 from Springbank, 1 bottle of each. Had others I'd not heard of but you'd most likely know them. The worker said he'd tried for ages to get Springbank and Gods honest truth when I asked the price he said £250 for the 10 and £500 for the 15. I asked if he had Hazelburn and Glenfarclas but he said no. Imagine the price for Springbank 21 or 30, maybe 1k or 2k. Hahaha! I couldn't help but tell him how I had purchased all mine for RRP and that on auction sites it's cheaper and I was only asking because I wasn't keen on the travel I did to get my Springbanks. I was tempted to offer him 1 of my Hazelburn 21 for £500. The area is supposedly a wealthy area but you have to be a moron to pay those prices for the standard Springbanks.

    Great video as always. Mark always makes me want to buy more whisky. I feel though we should remind people that adjusted for inflation those bottles costing £1440 would be the equivalent of spending £3.5k today so not chump change back then a sizable investment. Cheers!

      Hi Wayne, good point. And you have to remember the foresight that people had to buy and collect these back when they did. People laugh at me for suggesting GF will have a similar turn of fortunes. People need open their minds to longer timescales!

      I definitely agree. Everyone needs to develop and understand what it means to have a longer time preference. I think it was easier for people to do this before the internet. We all have to exercise much more willpower. 😀

    I'm amazed that the 27 year old countdown collection was selling on average for about £3000 when it first appeared at auction with the 1.5cl sample aswell at Whisky auctioneer. Most you see at SWA are minus the sample. Now they're selling for ,on average £2600,with the cheapest one selling for £2200. Really is there any point in putting them into auction now when you'll only make £100,or lose about £300. Obviously people will be happy to buy them all from auctions as they're released to have the full collection and knowing they'll be able to pick them up either cheaper for what they sold for or for roughly the RRP if they just leave it a few months until the prices come down. Is the Springbank hype starting to settle,and is people just moving onto something else because they're just not getting the hype,and the fact they're annoyed that they can't get any core range bottles as alot just appear at auction as just a flipping whisky.

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  Před rokem

      100% agreed - why are people buying bottles they can't afford and have to flip immediately. People are doing it with our Coronation bottles. LOTS more content on my thoughts on the marking coming soon!

      @barryhamilton7845 Před rokem

      @@MarkLittler Yeah I watch the auctions every month Mark to see what they're selling for and first noticed them appearing at Whisky auctioneer within a week or so of their release and selling for around £3000 with the sample. I did honestly think that they would have sold for at least double their price but was quite surprised to see them not. And at W.A a few have just sold for £2200-2300 in the last few days, so that's a loss for those people. Yeah and with the coronation bottle, I see there's one on TGWA at the moment sitting at around 3k. Are some people just getting fed up with the hype surrounding Springbank and looking at other whiskies and leaving Springbank to the people that can afford them? I bought a Springbank 10 last month from SWA for £55 and then £5 commision,so £10 over the RRP which I don't mind paying,as I just go an collect it , as I'm only a few miles away. I've also noticed the 10 levelling out around £50-£60 as sometimes I find it hard to get a bottle,but then I do buy them to drink. I notice on average every month around 1K Springbank bottles appear between all the auctions ,most appearing at SWA and W.A. For anyone new to whisky collecting with plenty of money and looking to start a Springbank collection, they can pick the best of Springbanks up between them all,as some nice bottles appear, occasionally ones I've never seen before. Even the Tesco Springbank is selling for a nice sum. Looking back a few years the millennium collection was selling for £3-£5k at auction ,and some with the miniatures... Unbelievable!

    The people who held onto these Springbanks lucked out. If it wasn’t for the COVID-19 pandemic none of this Springbank madness wouldn’t have happened imo. In my area Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn sat at retail for years. Pandemic happens they get scooped up, people drank/enjoyed them, then all the fervor for them happens. Now the Springbank 15 year that I loved at $105 for a 750ml bottle, that used to sit on shelves, is now $160 for a 70cl bottle if I’m lucky to find it.

      It's mad isn't it! It's a tough one to call isn't it - should the retailers hand profits to the flippers or keep them for themselves - it's an intersting moral question!

      @@MarkLittler I actually spoke to the store manager about this. It is a bigger regional store so they're limited in pricing. Here is what he said. "I sell the Springbank 15s at what the home office tells me which was $160 USD per bottle. If someone is going to buy the case at the specified price per then I have to sell it to them. He knew the buyer was going to flip them for BIG money abroad but the home office specified price was paid for. If he can sell that case for insane money more power to him." I then asked the manager but what about us normal dudes that want to enjoy the Scotch. He then said. "I'll talk to upper management and see what they say. When we get this stuff in it is first come first serve." Oh well no more Springbanks for me. I can't get to the store faster than the flippers.
