  • One of the most important pieces of recovery equipment you should always take with you off-road is a shovel, and the Rhino-Rack Stow It Utility Holder has got to be one of the easiest and most secure ways to carry this vital bit of kit.

Behind the times here guys. Rhino rack needs to be re engineered for off road use. Ronny Dahl and Tyler Thompson are just 2 of the more prevalent youtubers to post about this. Let alone Internet forums.

Hey guys did you know that if you have a Rhino rack installed as soon as you leave the bitumen the maximum allowable weight on the Rhino rack drops by 30%? Hope that shovel is not heavy.

This types of innovation is why I wanted a Rhino Rack Pioneer platform. Plus they're an Aussie company. But then found out its rated maximum off-road load weight limit on the 80 series Landcruiser is only 30kg once you've taken the Pioneer platform rack's weight into consideration (36kg). Making it already exceed it's weight carrying limit off-road even with just my Rhino Rack Batwing attached (32kg). So it's useless at carrying anything else off-road. Very disappointed. So sadly I had to look elsewhere.

Might want to redo the maths on that... 30kg on an 80 Series????

@@phlanker101 No joke. I was gabsmack when I found out. Rhino Rack has a 100kg ON-ROAD max load rating on the 80 Series for the Pioneer platform. Then take the weight of the rack (36kg) off that total leaves 64kg available. Using Rhino Rack's own calculation to find its OFF-ROAD load rating (divide on-road rating by 1.5), that equates to 66kgs. Taking off the empty weight of the Pioneer platform off that number, leaves only 30kg that can be carried on the rack, off-road. On my existing roof rack, I carry a Rhino Rack Batwing (32kg), a fixed 160W solar panel (10kg), a pair of Maxtrax (10-15kg) & a long handled shovel (5kg). Total = 57-62kg max. So if I get the Pioneer platform, It'll exceed its max load rating for off-road. So very disappointed as I had my heart set on the Rhino Rack Pioneer platform. The Front Runner has a 150kg load rating for both on & off-road. So that's where I'm leaning towards right now.

@@HammerRocks Works out at 42.7kg (divide the capacity in their calculator by 1.5 not the original roof loading) but that's still less than I expected. That said, I've never put that much up there... Usually the Batwing, solar panel and my swag which is under 42.7 kg.

@@HammerRocks Might wanna check your weights of your gear too - a pair of maxtrax are only 7kg and the batwing only weighs 21kg :)

@@phlanker101 Don't forget to add the mounts for the Maxtrax. But yeah, along with the Batwing, weight adjusted, overall its less - feel slightly better. But makes me wonder if all those people carrying RTTs, weighing 70kg+, & awnings etc. on their Pioneer platform off-road, realise they're exceeding its limits? Technically might even be illegal, or could compromise their insurance claims if involved in an accident.
