This song hits to hard! My dad has worked multiple jobs since I was born so in a way he’s the boy and I’m the boys boy. Getting to witness this all. 32 years later still just wishing my father would have 1 serious convo with me other than joking and heading to work. (Don’t get me wrong he’s provided for his family and love him for it, just sucks not having a dad around when he’s tech around)
The video is about a son who was raised in the shadow of his father. Proceeding through his life he becomes more and more frustrated while feeling obligated to carry on the family name. Over-encumbered by work, the video skips to his life as an older man. Coming full circle, we see him pick up his toy plane that he used to love as a kid. He then takes off his glasses and can again see in full color, showing that true happiness is not about money, but rather the innocence and creativity inside of us that he seems to have forgotten about until it was too late. I believe.
Love the "I believe" at the end. But you are quiet accurate as to what the video depicts. Personally I would to like to shake the hand of the director producer of the video as it is such a beautiful creation. I mean the range of color, the costumes, lighting every thing about it is beautiful and the way the story is brought about is fabulous. The ending always gets me and it has been years, yet it gets me. And once again, you are correct, but maybe it was about ninjas as the other guy said. I believe.

+Bad-Girl Bex I've always thought thats one of the most unique things about atreyu's style, as they make that contrast between Alex's and Brandom's voices quite good. Plus they do not only do that good on recorded songs but also live (I got to see them last 27th in Madrid and I can confirm that, which was btw a reeally enjoyable and an awesome experience)
Brandon is a super talented drummer and vocalist his voice shakes my insides. I had the pleasure of meeting him when his other band HELL OR HIGHWATER played in Vegas March 2018 ...he's a sweetheart♡♡♡. We talked about family and music and he sold me my band tee when it didn't fit he let me get a smaller size. ♡♡♡♡♡ Super humble dude despite his success. Love Atreyu and Hell or highwater ♡♡♡
My oldest son (is 30 now) played this all the time when he was in his teens and i fell in love with the band. I am 48 and listen to old and new Atreyu loud as possible.
I’m 31. The first time I heard this song I was at a pre game at UW Madison. I remember stopping the chatter and saying, “Dude, do you hear this? Everyone, blast the music!” We all just sat and listened and enjoyed a real great tune. Memories like that are priceless.
I’m honestly glad I’ve found this song.. even though I’ve heard of it once my brother has played it while he drove me home.. I thought it was good, but now that I understand how the song is- I’ll never forget how great this song is as well as how sad it is. I’m also going through frustration as I’m having the hard times this year including school and personal reasons. I mean it’s a l or to handle, but i listen to this every time by myself since I can’t really do much these days. The first time I saw this video, I could really REALLY see the point of view of that guy as he got older as if it’s just like me. I don’t what else to say, but this is very much relatable considering how the video goes by. This is the very first time I’ve ever like.. cried over some video because it’s just too relatable. I’m sure everyone else can feel what I’m feeling and knows how relatable this music video can be. I’ll have to thank my older brother sometime including the people who made this song. I’m hoping that they’re able to continue creating amazing music such as this to this day. It’s 2022 still, in fact almost 2023. Let’s make 2023 different sometime. I’ll be looking forward to see some good during 2023, and I’m hoping things will begin to change overtime. Thank you for reading.
"So I'll pace around like a lamb before the slaughter. I'll stay here as long as you let me. Decisions been made obvious so I will return where I started, I'll stay here. When I'm finished, I'll wither away." THIS LINE IS EVERYTHING
I love the story of this song. When you are young you wonder and dream (to fly). When you grow up your dreams are replaced by what you know will let you survive. Then suddenly you realize you lost something in yourself (mid life crises). As you retire you realise what you lost. Your dream (to fly). "The theft" of society has made you just another number and your want for no risk has allowed it. Risk comes with rewards. Nobody ever said they safely changed the world. Remember that.
As a man is born, he comes with dreams and aspirations. As he grows he often is pushed down by the mediocrity around him. Mediocre people are threatened by dreamers. He is left with nothing as the years go by, but by the end we see that the dream never truly died.
I lost a good friend a couple days ago. He was a huge Atreyu fan and this was his favorite song. Back in the day he would jam this on repeat. Today, I'm jamming it for him. RIP Brad.
I've read some comments on other sites where people were trying to find the meaning of the song and a bunch of them were saying it's about losing a girl or something like that. I think I found what they're really trying to convey: It's called The Theft because the man's life and all the time he had to live was slowly being stolen form him until when he finally had the time, he found what he enjoyed when he had no responsibilities i life and questions what life would have been like if he did things the way he wanted to. Might be complete bullshit, but it's my take on the song. Still really freakin awesome.
Edward England I completly agree. I have no idea why people think this song is another song about girl. They are clearly singing about time, how it is slowly running from man.
"The Theft" He bends and he breaks If he gives they will take away His passion, his pain, his grace He exhales, A thousand black flowers explode Into butterflies as they're away [Chorus:] Rip them out, take them, Burn to coals as they crush and leave nothing That resembles a soul of a man See him numb, see him crushed (see him numb, see him crushed) Rip them out, take them Burn to coals as they crush and leave nothing That resembles a soul of a man Leave them numb, leave them crushed (leave them numb, leave them crushed) Took the fire inside One too many times He's burning over and out now, He flails Up against the raging tides, No more fights Everything you ever wanted to see, See it in his eyes One more time, one more time Climb down to test the waters, My hands feel like they're rusting away, yeah, yeah, yeah, So I'll pace around like a lamb before the slaughter I'll stay here as long as you let me, Decision's been made obvious so I will return Where I started I'll stay here When I'm finished I'll whither away [Chorus]

I don’t understand how Atreyu wasn’t much bigger than they were. They had so many songs that should have dominated the charts, this being one of them.
yes , this may be a hit - song like linkin park used to do, mayby metalcore is heavy more than song on rock-mainstream-charts.
Yea man tons of bands are underrated ya know life ain’t fair all the time I suppose, Atreus has pretty good recognition at least tho so that’s good
I’m probably a bit older than you but when I was in my late teens (2004-2008) they were super popular here in Jersey in the hardcore scene

A lot of their songs are poetry in motion. The lyrics to demonology and heartache are amazing also.

"The Theft"
He bends and he breaks
If he gives they will take away
His passion, his pain, his grace
He exhales,
A thousand black flowers explode
Into butterflies as they're away
[Chorus:]
Rip them out, take them,
Burn to coals as they crush and leave nothing
That resembles a soul of a man
See him numb, see him crushed (see him numb, see him crushed)
Rip them out, take them
Burn to coals as they crush and leave nothing
That resembles a soul of a man
Leave them numb, leave them crushed (leave them numb, leave them crushed)
Took the fire inside
One too many times
He's burning over and out now,
He flails
Up against the raging tides,
No more fights
Everything you ever wanted to see,
See it in his eyes
One more time, one more time
Climb down to test the waters,
My hands feel like they're rusting away, yeah, yeah, yeah,
So I'll pace around like a lamb before the slaughter
I'll stay here as long as you let me,
Decision's been made obvious so I will return
Where I started I'll stay here
When I'm finished I'll whither away
[Chorus]
Thank you!!!
I always look for the post with lyrics. Thank you

Id like to know. Probably many others too
Got to respect the drummer singing this is a great song
Brandon Sallers always came through on them choruses!
What a lesson in how to convey such emotion through a video with no dialogue. The video starts out bright and happy and colorful and as the lad grows things get darker and more grey as it progresses. I also feel like the place he finds his childhood toy airplane is symbolic as he is in a snowy dead clearing meaning either thats the world now or its the world as he sees it. Just an incredible video.

Whoever directed this music video can just literally show anyone this and will be instantly hired to do anything.
Men live lives of silent struggle. If Atreyu is coming back with new music, this is the direction to go....
I just turned 40 and this still gives me goose bumps
This song helped me through a dark and ugly time when it came out and I'm forever grateful for it. One of my favorites.

The song is about preserving the core of a person. About finding the strength to defend your unique creative attributes. And to resist building a life based primarily on the expectations of others, which is secretly self-doubt, and constant need for positive affirmation from the outside world.

I love you dad
Wow its been so long i heard this song back in the days... Its been a while but i can still the power inside of me.. How beautiful.. *tear tear*
this is one of those songs i wish i could hear for this first time all over again.
I was just going through random suggested videos and stumbled upon this. Haven't heard it in 12 damn years. It still holds up and it's still absolutely amazing.
I came back to check on Atreyu, I forgot how much I loved their music. Beauty in music.
