    Thanks for putting this together Bryce and taking a look at the X-Mid.
    I appreciate the feedback and constructive thoughts. For some of the cons, here are some notes that might be helpful:
    1) For space, the inner tent is adjustable inside the peaks so you can pull it higher for more headroom. This pulls the inner tighter to so it can generally increase space all over and then when that is combined with the clip pulls outs on the sides it helps. But yes the inner is a fairly average size. You may prefer the X-Mid Pro 1 version. That has a smaller footprint yet the inner area is actually noticeably larger so the ratio of the footprint area:inner area is better.
    2) For orienting the floor, if you’re trying to get the floor somewhere specific then throw out the tent from one end and remember will always be angled a bit to the left. So you twist the tent a bit to the right. That works pretty well, but if you really want to get the floor exactly in a spot then you can start the pitch by staking the 4 spots around the fly that correspond to the floor corners (rather than the fly corners).
    3) With regard to pitching it in the wind, if you get the walls tighter that will help quite a bit (my pitching video has some tips on this) and also there are guyline attachments to the side panels that are helpful.
    4) Sorry about that backwards tensionlock routing. I’ve only heard ever something like this reported once before. We build these tents at high quality factory (same factory as MSR, Big Agnes) but occasionally there can be a mistake.
    5) Thanks for the feedback/request for dual zipper sliders. I’ve been avoiding this because we use larger/tougher #5 zippers but then the sliders are heavier so adding two gets harder to justify on an ultralight tent, but we do get some requests for this and I am considering adding it to the ‘Solid’ version that is aimed more at rough weather.
    With regard to innovation/copying, the Stratospire certainly invented the offset ridgeline (well actually it was a user who suggested it to Tarptent). I don’t claim to have invented that. What the X-Mid invented was a way to make a trekking pole tent work inside of a simpler rectangular fly shape. Previous trekking pole tents had downsides like no vestibules, measuring pole lengths, more complex pitching, poles in doorways, mandatory guylines etc. The X-Mid avoids all these problems with the unique floorplan that has a diagonal floor inside of a rectangular fly, which enables everything to work in a simpler, lighter fly shape. Certainly some specific bits pre-existed (rectangular flys, offset ridgelines) but the Stratospire didn't have the simpler floorplan the X-Mid developed (the Strat is a normal rectangle floor sitting in the standard position in a hexagon fly). The both tents do have an angled ridgeline but aside from this the shapes are quite different and the X-Mid is substantially simpler and lighter.
    Cheers,
    Dan

      yeah man that's it. You need a few set up to get all the possibilities to adjust. Besides the footprint it's a monster. I like the extra space to keep stuff outside and have the inside clean

  • @ScottValler
    @ScottValler Před 3 měsíci +11

    I used the x-mid pro 2 last year on the Colorado Trail and I loved the extra space and how easy it was to setup in the rain. I did fight the footprint three or four times, otherwise, liked it way more than my duplex. It handled the strong thunderstorm winds well. Yes, the wind did catch the tent, but it didn't collapse as long as I had 6 stakes placed.

    Nice review! I'm not sure I agree with everything but I'll say that I shared a bunch of your concerns/cons initially. I got a 2p first, then the idea of lighter got into my head and I got a 1p (so I have both). The 1p is almost better as a tarp as you suggest, though you can 'skinny pitch' them which reduces the footprint a bunch.
    The 1p is a bit of an odd tent. It works perfectly and I kind of fell in love with it after my initial disappointment of the interior space, and incredibly similar size and weight to the 2p. It works perfectly for a L/W pad with a light rectangular (or fully open) quilt over it because it tucks in perfectly on the sides. The extra room at the head and foot was just that; I think that was Dan offering a bit more 'inside' space to keep shoes and other things that you didn't want critters getting into instead of just lopping off the ends to a rectangle and reducing the available interior length.
    The 2p just makes more sense overall. It's so close in size and weight I can't imagine anyone not benefitting from the extra space; it's huge inside by comparison and the extra pockets are awfully nice. I do have a place for the 1p, and I like it, but I'll almost always default to my 2p because I take my dog with me quite often, and I do like to keep my gear inside the mesh when possible, though I will say that the ability to hang stuff off the trekking poles is pretty sweet and helps with keeping thigs out of your gear.
    If it were me, standing on Dan's shoulders and doing the armchair quarterback, I'd have choked in one of the vestibules to reduce the weight and footprint, OR I'd have eliminated the second door and extended the floor such that even though that pole was now inside the living space, I'd have the extra netted area for my gear, or my dog inside the single person tent (kind of like the Lunar Solo theory).
    That's also a pretty groovy little drone; I agree with your assessment of having a larger/manual drone. I have a DJI Mini2 but I just don't use it like I thought, mostly because I really don't have the time or inclination to learn to get good with it. I think following iterations of the HoverAir X1 will be pretty impressive and I'll be keeping my eye on those since I really like the concept.

    I love the different geometry on these. I use a 2p solid for 1p multiday hikes and love the space/weight/feature balance. I’m 6’4” and find the headroom good enough for changing etc. wouldn’t even think about the 1p. I’ve got the ground cloth too which lets you have a cracking tarp like setup with minimal effort if you don’t need the bug mesh.

    I had the 1P, but felt cramped in it (In its defense, it was my first 1p tent). I ended up selling it and picked up a 2p - absolutely love it! One of the things I like most about it is the different setups: rain fly only, bug net only (With star gazer kit), One side open (either side), both sides open, etc. As for the 2 doors on the 1P, that was another fine feature that drew me to it in the first place. One side (facing other campers) could be left closed while the other side (facing some awesome vista) could be left open - and get more ventilation.
    Good, honest review. And that drone is pretty cool!

    I used the X-Mid 1P for the first 850 miles or so on the AT last year. Leaving the inner tent attached is the way to go. I’ve never owned a tent that was so easy to setup up and take down. On a thru hike this is very important. With the two entries I did not have to worry about orientation when setting up either. It was extremely weatherproof as well. I switched to another tent for the rest of the AT but it was just so I could get my pack inside with all the rain we had. The footprint is large though. Made finding spots more challenging on the AT.

    Thanks Bryce, I love the drone, but I love the X-mid more. More than you do anyway, it seems! I have the 1p solid version and I think it is really great. I wanted a sub-1kg tent that I could sit up in and that had plenty of storage space and the X-mid 1ps does this well. The two vestibules are a real luxury, put your stuff in one and cook in the other. The offset inner is odd initially but you quickly get used to it and it means you get the headroom over the length of the inner. Anyway, if you are in the tent you are probably asleep most of the time and not worrying about the asymmetry. (It does have rotational symmetry though so you could focus on that if you can't sleep...) The tent is great in a wind, doesn't flap much if pitched properly and hasn't collapsed on me yet.
    Elli Hikes spent 100+ nights in her X-mid1p solid walking the length of the UK with her (small) dog. She says in her YT post-trip gear review that the tent shows no wear or tear even after so much use and that she loves the tent. Maybe someone, somewhere, has spent more time in an X-mid but there can't be that many. I've never spent so long in any tent but the main thing, probably, is to be out there having fun in whatever tent you've got.

  • @andreameigs1261
    @andreameigs1261 Před 24 dny

    I have a simple trick that works for getting the floor orientation right the first time every time (so far). It works with the xmid pro 1, and should work with the xmid as well:
    I fold the tent in line with the floor so that when I unroll it, I'm unrolling it where the floor will be. The fly is a rectangle, but if you fold the fly in line with the floor and then fold the floor into a rectangle and then fold and roll the tent in line with the floor, then all you have to do when you want to set up, is just unroll the tent where you want the floor to be, just like you would with a rectangular tent. I hope that makes sense. It seems wordy and convoluted.
    After unrolling, I tack down the center loops (on the short sides), to "keep my place" so to speak, and then I'll tack down two corners, and then the other two, while making sure I am not pulling on the center loops, and once I have it about right, then I start working on the rectangle and sinking the stakes all the way in.

  • @jfifield20
    @jfifield20 Před 3 měsíci +3

    Just curious what other 1P tents you are comparing the interior size to? The X-Mid 1P has one of the largest interiors of any comparable trekking pole tent.
    Also the advantage of having a double vestibule is that you don't have keep as much gear inside the tent so it creates more room to spread out. Lastly it looks like your inner was not cinched up to the top all the way. If it wasn't that should get you another ~2 inches of headspace + you can guy out the sides if you want more interior volume on sides.

    • @BryceNewbold
      @BryceNewbold  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It looked saggy in the video but it really wasn't. I had it attached to the doors and your right, using the guy lines will help but not so much at the top. Other 1p tents I'm thinking of are the tigerwall 1, lunar solo, ov forties, just to name a few. Now those might not have "more sit up room" . But to me they feel like I can twist around and change clothes without touching the bug net. Xmid just seemed narrow. However, this is just initial impressions. Time will tell. It's still a great tent. Thanks for the comment!

    I use the xmid 2p more then the pro 1. It's awkward to setup at normal campsites like on the AT. But the 2p feels like a mansion compared to most tents, and is still only 2.2 pounds. Even if I'm solo I'll take the 2p just to have massive tent room to bring all my toys that make my pack 40lbs. So far I love the durston. Coming from a lanshan 1 user mostly.

I don't think much can be done about the footprint, but I do think the orienting issue could be addressed with a design feature (colored tabs on the fly to denote the inner? Color the corresponding stake points? Just talk more about it in the "how to" or release photo/video helps?). Who else has a four-stake design? Not Tarptent. Not Sierra Designs. Gonna setup and takedown hundreds of times and stakes are the majority of that effort. Xmid Pro's have more headroom, since netting's sewn into wall. That leaves it single-wall overhead, but hasn't been a condensation issue yet. Certainly wouldn't trade back to non-Pro design. Yes, it's a big-footprint, but the rain/splash stays far away. Mud too. Can put on shoes/boots without slopping around in mud. Want a small footprint? Get a bivy. Or a free-standing? Can't wait to see Mr Durston's freestanding offering. Maybe he can integrate trekking-poles into more than porch-mode? Maybe storm-mode? (more...)
    Regarding vestibules - wouldn't own a tent that doesn't have two (cross-ventilation and bear-escape : ).

      I mean there are quite a few that use 5. Fly creek style tents. 4 is a cool feature in a pinch but let's be honest. We're all going to use 6. 😆. And cross ventilation is definitely a pro of the 2 doors! Didn't think of that. 👍

      Good review. Really like the drone! I can’t understand why someone would buy the 1 person version. The weight different of the two is minimal and the space difference is insane. I’ve owned a Tarptent and now X-Mid Pro 2 and have to say they are both great but the design of the Durston, when it is a 2 person, is as close to perfect as I have used.

    The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo will overcome most of your concerns and dislikes of the Dursten. No confusing geometry, sloping walls to deflect wind. Much greater interior useable floor space for having all of your gear inside with you for easy reach. One smaller vestibule. It also weighs less and as a higher denier sil-poly. Only one treking pole is needed. Has a smaller footprint. Offered in two different colors. Competitively priced. Check it out.

The Durston truely deserves its praise (if you get it and understand the pitch). There are people that don't analise and get the pitch of it but that just means they haven't practiced enough 😊

    Hello,
    My name is Sal and i wanted to thank you for all your videos as they have been instrumental in my journey of becoming a backpacker . Backpacking was new to me about 7 years ago , and it has really become a way to escape the challenges and rat race we call life . About 2 and half years ago my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor , and thankfully we were able to safely remove it without any complications . Her recovery on the other hand has been a bumpy road , and backpacking has been my main outlet . I am partnering with a local Phoenix non profit “The Gray Matters Foundation” that supports brain tumor patients and families and I will be building a “ Newbie Backpacker “ basket for their annual basket raffle event being held on May 11th and I was wondering if you would be willing to donate any items or discount codes for this event . I was hoping to introduce my passion of backpacking to either surviving patients or caregiver/companions like myself . Any support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      Pretty sure I never said I had a problem with the zip. I think I said something along the lines of "worth noting" ... so your drunk ass can get back in your tent easier at 4am 🤣.. just playing. The parrelogram isn't the confusing part. Setting up on a hill requires you to position the "square " tent at around a 22 degree angle to position your body correctly. I stand by claim. It's goofy af.. nice tent though. Just had high expectations from all the fanboys
