I think the "ugly guy king mentality"Jeannie was talking about is actually the result of guys who are aware that they are not the most attractive trying to compensate for it by having lots of confidence and charisma.
The whole thing is superficially subjective anyway Noone is actually ugly or beautiful as each person is judged by a per person basis. What one may find attractive another may find repulsive. "Giving the ugly guy (or girl) a chance" already implies the person in question is ugly inside. Afterall you want a partner not a curio to show off what's the point in getting a "looker" if they don't make you happy?

The nod thing is not 100%, if you want them to look at something past you you use two small quick nods in that direction. A single nod is come here/ come on. The direction depends on your facing and location of the person you are talking to. Also an up nod along with eye motion can be a "look over there" also if the "target" is behind the person you are talking to.
