PCT 2021 Episode 4: Beautiful, But Brutal (MM 101.2 - 151.8)

  • Hey guys! Most of you know I ended my PCT thru hike attempt a couple weeks ago. I made it home safely, and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind since then. At first, it was making the rounds to visit everyone and do some fun Florida things my family had already planned. Then, there was an unexpected death in the family. It seems I made it home just in time to be with my family through this last week or so. That being said, I’m doing well. Things have calmed down, and I’m getting the chance to reflect on my hike and do a little catching up. I’ve been taking a break from social media and CZcams, but I’m getting back on board here at last 😊 Thank you guys as always for your kindness and support, and your patience with me.
I did hike about another 40 miles after this, so there will be one more video, hopefully quite soon, about those last 40 miles and my decision to leave the trail and end my hike. Stay tuned for that. 💙

Thank you for sharing. I think so many of us were invested in your journey, and even though you’ve decided to leave the trail, you completed so much more than most people do! 150+ miles is an achievement. 💗

Hey guys! Just to be clear, I did end my hike early, and I’m back home. This is just me catching up on the videos. 😌 There will be one more video after this about my last days on trail and my decision to leave.

That doesn’t change my mind, you’re still a great inspiration. You kept saying things like “I’m grateful” and “I’ll figure it out”. You’ve come so far and you have so many more opportunities to be grateful and figure things out.
Thank you so much for sharing. You are truly inspirational because you try.

Your videos are beautiful, the editing and music are both great! They’re very peaceful and I like watching them after work, and then immediately start scheming about how I’m going to take my next backpacking trip. You’ve already done so much more than most, my longest ever trip was 70 miles. I hope you enjoyed the experience

I am sorry that you decided to end your attempt (for me!). Your videos are so real, and have taught me a lot. My daughter and I have watched a lot of other through hiking videos, and they made us think that we need to do 20 mile days all the time. That set us up for some very unrealistic expectations to measure up to. I appreciate you telling us about the tough parts, and being so honest and open. Talking about the mental tough parts has been so helpful, too. Your talk about getting to that difficult water source has helped me to see that all of that is part of the journey, not extra. I think that all of these things will help us when we are able to make our own through hike attempt. So, thank-you! Your photography is beautiful, too!!!

Marcy Rose, This was an episode full of wonderful scenery that you made an effort to capture. Excellent editing with the music and I do enjoy it as you show us the trail in front of you. Such a reflection of life? We don’t always know what is around the next hill, but enjoy the journey the best we can. As I mentioned in my last comment on Episode 3, we are impressed with anyone who has hiked from Mexico to PVC. In my mind, a true accomplishment, and as may PCT sections that I have hiked myself, you have hiked more than I have. YOU ARE AWESOME and as you have been a front line RN during the past year, you are already a hero to all of us! Looking forward to your big finish at Big Bear. Remember that while everyone is encouraging you to keep hiking, that does not have to be this spring (consider travel to Washington State and maybe the portion of PCT on the border of Mount Rainier National Park in late July). THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR HIKE, . . . Mike

I'm sorry to hear it's been so tough on you but regardless of what happens just remember that you are remarkable and as long as you try your hardest, it doesn't matter if you finish or not. Obviously for selfish reasons I want you to finish so I can follow along and learn things as I am planning on hiking the PCT myself in 2023!

Marcy I'm very sorry about the death in your family. I am also terribly sad to hear that you ended your hike early. I have been watching all of your videos, and you were my inspiration. I have always been a hiker but NEVER a backpacker. I recently retired. I hike around 80 miles a month, and was actually considering taking up backpacking and doing a big thru hike of either the PCT or the Arizona Trail some day. I am from Phoenix. Your videos are awesome. They were well done and you portrayed the true daily challenges in taking on this huge endeavor. I was rooting for you and keeping tabs of all of your challenges thinking that if I DID do this kind of hike someday, my challenges would be very similar. I have even started researching backpacking gear thanks to your videos. Sad to hear about your decision to leave. I really wanted to see you finish...............but congratulations in hiking 150 miles. THAT is an accomplishment in itself. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your honest commentary! I hope you give yourself the opportunity to go on more hikes sometime soon. I’ve watched too many thru hike videos that gloss over the tough parts and instead showcase the glorious views or the fun, quirky people they meet. I can totally relate to camping in certain spots in order to avoid groups of people, also feeling defeated from a heavy pack and unforgiving terrain.

I'm always checking for your videos and so glad to see you posted episode 4. You're doing great and I'm cheering for you. Keep going. My son did the PCT in 2016. Just know that the hardships, the agony, the feet, and the ups and downs are part of the adventure. I can't tell you how many times I told my son to get back on the trail and finish. It is just as much a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. Many people decide to get off trail and thats ok; consider it a learning experience. It's hard, it's rough, it hurts, and when you finish you will say that it was so worth it. Embrace the suck. Come back and get it done. We're at Carson Pass and when you get close you let me know. We'll spend a zero with you and celebrate. However I may see you on the trail. I'll be on the JMT portion of the trail this summer.

It was nice to see the happy hours when you were walking near the water and in the blessed shade of the trees. But that heat and wind later were not your friends. ☺️. It is rainy and cold here in the mountains nations of CO, but we are so grateful for the moisture. ☔️. Today I am headed to the store to purchase some supplies for trail magic for folks on the CDT. Most of them have not hit CO yet, but you hikers have a way of coming up,the trail much faster than I can imagine. • @johnmcneeley
    @johnmcneeley Před 3 lety

I just discovered your videos. They are nicely done. Great looking video and nice music selection. I ended my Arizona trail Thru Hike early. Just made it 50 miles. So I can empathize with the tough time that you had. That Arizona trail day 1 starts with a brutal climb up to 9100 feet. That made me painfully aware of that extra 40 to 50 extra pounds on my body. And coming from a desk job at sea level here on Maui made it that much harder. I thought I was in reasonable hiking shape. But walking 4 to 6 miles a day at sea level doesn't prepare you for those brutal climbs. Youth is no longer on my side (age 66). A long thru hike still isn't out of my system. I'm starting by losing 40 to 50 pounds. It's going pretty good so far. I'm down 34. Just dropping that weight makes a huge difference in how strong I feel. Real soon I'm going to ramp up my exercise. There is a mountain on my way home from work. I'm going to start making that climb up to the windmills. After I lose the weight and have some successful training, I'll decide on my next hike whether it be the PCT, the Colorado trail, or the Arizona trail again. Thanks for your honest well put together videos. Good luck in the future.

I just found your hike channel today. For some reason I missed it last year. I really enjoyed it and am sad that it didn't work out the way you had hoped. You did get to experience a small sample of it though. I think it would be way more fun to have a hiking buddy to commiserate with at least while camping. As you probably know each segment of the trail is quite different so don't be hesitant to try section hiking in the future. The high Sierra is great after most of the snow melts and Northern California is entirely different from Southern California. Oregon is another great hike if you can brave the mosquitoes. Washington is even better than Oregon if you do it before the snow & rain hits. Yes I think that section hiking is the way to go and you don't have to complete the whole section, just do what you want of it. Cheers and great hiking in the future to ya gal! --Jack

She quit? I thought she came back on the trail and this is what I am watching. If you did quit miles to go, I hope you come back. I have so enjoyed everything that you see as you’re walking. Take care.

The desert can be so beautiful, but also inhospitable and difficult. I wish you had been able to experience the Sierras...

I have been worried about you. So glad you are still hiking. Making adjustments is all part of the experience. BTW. The bird you heard at Eagle Rock was a meadowlark.

She actually stopped hiking. This is just the video she made before she stopped! Hope that helps

The lack of sleep part would just make all the other things harder. You really got some great footage of that section and do a good job balancing being real with your struggles and showing the good things on trail as well :)

Good for you trying! I enjoy watching videos like this, but often fall behind, still end up watching much later. You will get views on this video for years, so I hope you keep filming your hikes, and maybe give it another try another time. Cool to see one of the few sections I have hiked at Warner Springs.

I love that tan(?) light weight hoodie you wear all the time - didn't see it mentioned in your gear video - can you please tell me the brand, where you got it, etc - looks like the hiking gloves are tan too - are they OR? Thanks so much.

Now that you have had a couple weeks back home to recover, YOU NEED TO GET BACK OUT ON THE TRAIL!!!!! do NOT just give up and quit. you can do it. just get back out on the PCT and keep hiking!!! its ok to take a little break, but dont just quit. dont just give up. get back on trail, it will get easier. YOU CAN TOTALLY DO IT!

Hi, can you tell me what you used for food storage? I’m hiking section A only. I’m beginner. I worry about rodents. Some say stored away from the tent and some say it’s OK to keep it with you so what did you use for your storage that help so rodents don’t get to it? Thanks and awesome videos 😁

  • @iwasbornwithoutaname7774

Just out of curiosity why the PCT not the AT closer to home? I am an Arizonan and the desert is tough hiking especially in the heat. .......just wondering ☀️🌵

You are doing this hike so well Marcy. I like how you put the video together, it's kinda pensive and beautiful too. The music is rather heavenly I have to say and yes, I am going to stay tuned.
