During most of my youth, my mother was ill and mostly bedridden with untreated pain from multiple painful conditions that can't be fixed. I had to physically fight her, as a kid, to stop her from doing something to stop the pain that I don't know if I'm allowed to say in YT comments. Over a decade ago a doctor prescribed the infamous Purdue opioid. I think it saved her life because it got her out of bed and exercising, doing gardening intense enough I can't keep up with her. He dosage hasn't increase beyond the initially prescribed amount. She doesn't seem high or loopy. We agree she probably is physically addicted by now, but at 77, so what? Never in my wildest dreams did I think she would this long and in pretty good shape considering. I agree that Purdue did awful things to a lot of people and those people deserve justice; but in our zeal to do right, I hope it isn't forgotten that for some fraction of humans, such strong drugs might literally extend their lives and greatly improve quality of life. Mom's doctor will be retiring soon and we both worry the scandal will have made it essentially impossible to continue getting that medication.

Why my pain dr did not suggest this medication when he took the other one away I will never know.... but I appreciate my rheumatologist trying to be respectful of my pain dr and also trying to make sure I didn't void my pain contract and he was still trying to help me where no one else was and it was definitely something that needed to be addressed and effected all of my other health issues... they all effect each other...

At that age she's very influenced by her peers. Getting her into a support group where she meets peers who have the same goal, to change their behavior. Therapy might help too.
I was like your daughterat the same age, my addiction issues stemmed from being S.A'd when I was a child/young teen. Has she anything like that in her past? Worth trying to find out why she's driven to avoid reality and life.
She's still young, there is time and her brain is still forming. Often that's part of the issue- growing from child to adult is very hard for some people.
I wish you both the very best of luck. Stick by her- the love you show her maintains trust and truthfulness. Do draw firm boundaries though, some behaviours do require consequences but be strategic about it. Negotiation can work wonders with the right communication. Maybe you could both attend a few sessions together with a counsellor to mediate the agreement.
Be kind to yourself, it's very stressful on parents and the constant worry will wear you down.
I know both sides of this- my youngest daughter started on the same path I was on, which of course is my greatest fear-(No cptsd fortunately, more bulemia/anorexia and cutting herself, which was absolutely heartbreaking).
She's finally been diagnosed with bi polar/bpd, I am the same, same build, same personality type, as was my mother and her mother before her- all very similar re physiology and behaviour patterns. Do you know if there isany history genetically of mental instability in your family? It could also be worth doing a bit of testing to see if any base chemicals are messed up in her brain.
Again, good luck to you both, netfriend. You will both make It, hang in there. Parenthood can be so damn hard sometimes. x

I have chronic pain, DDD, arthritis, migraines, and I’ve been on the same regiment for 6 years. My tolerance after all this time has made it where I don’t get relief from the pain. I’m hoping that I will be going to a pain specialist soon. I’m also going to need surgery soon, and I’m concerned about the pain after surgery.

I've been on Fentanyl 25 mcg patches that are changed q 72h ( every 3 days).
I have a complex medical history- I live with a permanent J Tube, as I cannot take very much by mouth due to scar tissue issues with my esophagus after damage from a too tight Nissan Wrap for uncontrolled gerd. I also lost my stomach due to gastroparesis. I have always respected my medications, especially pain meds. Because I'm on Fentanyl, I have to sign a Yearly Contract and I'm tested once a year. My medication is always at the therapeutic levels for what is prescribed for me. The only time I have additional pain meds, for when I have surgery or other medical procedures where additional pain medicine is warrented.
I take Extra strength Acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed for any breakthrough pain. I've been on 25 mcg Fentanyl patches for 8 years now.

The US health system is dead last in industrialised nation, and the most expensive in the the world. Yay Murrica! I wouldn't call this slightly problematic. It's a tragedy. Hopefully only Matthew Perry. Nobody forced him to take drugs. It's not the Dr.'s or the pharmaceutical companies fault, either. I'll be on opioids the rest of my life. They are the the only things that enable me to have a normal life. Most opioid deaths were not caused by opioids alone, but by mixing it with alcohol or other drugs. They were counted as opioid overdoses. It was never as bad as reported. Now it's Fentanyl and Carfentanyl which are. Maybe it'll take the heat off drugs that people with chronic pain need. Pain is the most undertreated condition in the US.

Chronic pain patient, in the UK, who at times has really struggled to get medications -- have been scrutinised as an addict by some.
(This was primarily when I was only diagnosed with: fibromyalgia & myofascial pain, plus ehlers danlos signs, endometriosis and adenomyosis, and some mysterious undiagnosed pain....
...... Since having been diagnosed stage 4 cancer (age 43), the palliative nurses will phone doctors to sort medication if I'm struggling....
...... Prior to being recognised as stage 4 cancer, really struggled to get adequate pain relief, as the mystery pain was a mystery and I wasn't believed in how bad it was.
Have found that psychiatric services (PTSD, but needed brief inpatient at one point) were immensely sceptical about physical health issues, and would not put in place reasonable accommodations... Tried to tell me I didn't have illnesses I've had since birth.

I got issues with optimism and having a savage chronic pain issue definitely doesn't help in any way.
After a year and a half I finally got the referral for pain management.
The doctor was shocked at my state and asked me a lot of questions.
Even though I really want a no pain solution, I really, REALLY don't want a new problem.
So I was honest with him and said I'm a prime candidate for opioid disaster.
He took me seriously and I'm glad I was honest with him.
I still have huge pain, but it's not nearly as debilitating as it was.
More importantly, IMHO, I didn't get addicted to opioids.
    Addiction is horrible.

I have chronic pain from RA and Felty's Syndrome. My Rheumatologist has told me, to my face, anyone looking at my x-rays would know I need opiates for pain control. Will she give me what I need? NO!! If I am in active treatment with the biologic I get the pain goes down. The biologic wastes my immune system on the B cell side. So when I have to rest my body from the biologic, Percocet does not control pain. Up until a couple years ago, I was being treated by a pain clinic and treated like a drug addict and I was mentally ill.

I take buprenorphine for long-term chronic pain management, and have found that it helps a lot better than the traditional opioids/opiates such as oxycodone/hydrocodone, etc. The pain relief lasts hours longer than with those other short-acting medications and doesn't make me feel woozy/uncoordinated/nauseous. I take it by mouth sublingually though. I take the tablets because I kept getting the strips stuck to my teeth and once they're placed, they're not moving. lol.
I was also prescribed Narcan, and the pharmacist told me I was able to use it on any person I suspected of overdosing so I try to carry it with me wherever I go because our homeless population is ridden with fentanyl addiction.

All of these comments saying that ‘Matthew was a junkie, blah, blah, blah’ have apparently never been ‘touched’ by addiction.
Mathew Perry was a very transparent addict who was clearly fighting with himself in his own mind. If one has never been exposed to or, experienced any type of mental health issue, it can be a horrific inner turmoil much less sharing it publicly.
I do believe this is a highly serious issue and NEEDS to be brought into the spotlight.

Here is advice from an older physician who has practiced and been board certified in internal medicine, hematology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, hospice and palliative medicine and medical acupuncture(without board certificcation) and who has had multiple serious medical issues personally: With the exceptions of normal body constituents such as water, lipid, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, insulin, thyroid hormones, and so on, NO DRUG belongs in your body and ALL of them are by nature poisons. They ALL have potential toxic effects, and there safe and effective use comes through pharmacologic training and experience. Alcohol and other”recreational substances” are included in the very long risk of toxins. Live your life as best to you can to avoid them all, and if you can’t avoid them, make VERY SURE that the goals of your care should include at ever visit a discussion of what you can do to get off them and how to determine when the risks of using those drugs outweigh the desired benefits. No doctor worth 10 cents will avoid such discussion. After all, your life is the life that bears the cost.

Two and a half years ago, I was given IV ketamine in the ambulance after a car accident in which my fiance and 2 others were killed. Apparently I told the medics that I was a former heroin addict and hadn't used [thanks to 8 years on Suboxone] so they gave me ketamine rather than opiods to address the trauma and injuries from the crash. Unfortunately the effects of the ketamine made a horrible and tragic experience exponentially more terrifying. I don't know why it helps so many others while for me, it was like being trapped in my worst nightmare. Ever since the accident, I have wondered why I had such a terrible reaction to it but I have not yet found any answers that make sense. I have so many unanswered questions surrounding that day in general but the more time that passes, the further away answers seem. The grief and trauma following that crash are still pretty overwhelming and difficult to articulate...

This is my story and may not apply to everyone, however I renovate homes and found myself popping two Advil a day for about two months straight to manage achy muscle pain. Edit: I would paint a wall and just feel achy all over and need to stop whereas in my 20's I could paint a whole floor, sleep on the ground, wake up and then paint the upper floor. I have never been a pill popper in my life and figured this is what getting old feels like.
Well I started taking collagen for my skin and noticed that it removed my knee joint pain. (Glucosamine wasn't helpful, but it is effective on dogs (confirmed by my vet)) I also started taking Essential Amino Acids and didn't notice anything so I doubled up the recommended serving size. WOW! The histamine gave me a headache for a whole day, however I haven't taken Advil for muscle pain since!! Now I just go back to regular dosing so I don't get the headache. I wish I knew which amino acid I was low on so I can just take that.
The point is, our cells need protein and fat. Give your cells what they need and they'll stop screaming.

Can we ever in America take blame for what we do ourselves??? Always, always, always, Americans instantly have to blame someone for whatever has happened no matter how big or tiny the situation may be. Never can an American move forward and try to correct or solve a problem without first dogging whoever is to blame. I like my country but I hate the way a lot of Americans act. All these tiny groups that constantly ruin things for the majority is another one that bugs me. So what if you are offended by something stupid. And the egos....ugh.

The truth is , if he didn't seek the ketamin, there wouldn't have been an accidental overdose. We love in a society that is quick to pass off blame to others, and rarely take accountability for our own actions. If we didn't seek, we probably wouldn't find !!
