Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a condition among young children, wherein the brain has difficulty processing plans for speech movement. It has a few possible causes, but most of the time, the actual reason can't be determined.
A child with CAS often substitutes sounds (saying "wain" instead of "rain" or "tat" instead of "cat"), omits final consontants ("duh" instead of "duck"), stops the airstream (saying "tun" instead of "sun"), and simplifies sound combinations (saying "tar" instead of "star").
While childhood apraxia of speech is sometimes called developmental apraxia, not all children manage to grow out of the condition as they get older and develop. On the other hand, some kids with speech delays eventually follow the same speech and sound developmental patterns, although slower at a slower rate than their peers.
Hence, in order to make the most progress, experts recommend getting the help of a speech-language pathologist.
