- Here at JoBlo Originals, we're pretty massive Tom Cruise fans. With Top Gun: Maverick officially the biggest hit of his career, the superstar is once again at the top of the Hollywood heap, being celebrated as perhaps the greatest movie star of all time. But where did it begin for Cruise? We're going to dig into his early days, and the movie that made him a star in this episode of Tom Cruise Revisited examining Risky Business.
This 1983 sex comedy is far more sophisticated than people remember. The brainchild of writer-director Paul Brickman, who would only direct one more movie (Men Don't Leave in 1990), the film starred Cruise as a suburban high-schooler who runs amuck when his parents go out of town for the weekend. Needing to pay for repairs to his father's Porsche, he becomes an unlikely pimp to his friends thanks to some help from a gorgeous sex worker (Rebecca De Mornay) he's hooked up with and promptly fallen for.
While the premise sounds lewd and crude, the film is anything but. Surprisingly honest and directed with class and style, it was the perfect launching pad for Cruise and co-star Rebecca De Mornay, who became a major sex symbol of the eighties and nineties following this. In this episode of Tom Cruise Revisited, we examine the film's popularity, its stacked supporting cast (early roles for Joe Pantoliano, Bronson Pinchot, Curtis Armstrong and more), the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, and where it stacks up in the Cruise filmography.

Risky Business is to teen sex comedies what The Godfather is to gangster films, a true masterpiece in its genre
Agree 100%
@@JoBloOriginals Wrong as usual.
ZAPPED ! is to teen sex comedies what
The Godfather is to gangster films.
@@chazarcola7639nope
@@chazarcola7639what da fuq is Zapped… never heard of it u bozo
Top Gun may have made Cruise a megastar, Risky Business was Cruise breakout role. It's actually a lot more of a serious movie and sold a lot Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses.
“Sometimes you just have to say ‘what the f***’” Timeless classic!
I saw this with my girlfriend when it first came out. We went to it specifically because reviews said it was far better than the genre would suggest. We both found it very entertaining, and certainly exceeded our expectations. My girlfriend seemed especially transfixed by the underwear dance. Clearly, she was a huge fan of Bob Seger.
Haha - yep
Tangerine Dream's score is one of their best albums! Next to the Thief soundtrack .. thx for acknowledging how important this music was in this film.
I agree - second best score next to Thief
@@JoBloOriginals I think The Keep soundtrack is great as well. You should do a video on movies that used TD for the soundtrack. 🙂
Yep, I Agree! Also that picture of him SMILING, in really thick dark shades, is ICONIC!
needs more couch jumping to be true Peak Cruise, but yes it's nice.
Risky Business is underrated as hell! People view it as a teen comedy movie or something along those lines… and yes, it has plenty of that but it’s also so MUCH MORE than that. People remember it more for scenes like the one he’s dancing in underwear and such… but the film has some pretty deep themes, it’s a coming of age masterpiece pretty much, the cinematography is great, it’s extremely well directed, the atmosphere is amazing, the soundtrack is incredible and the score by Tangerine Dream is one of the best ever and fits the movie so well! You can see influences from a French movie like The Conformist, and you can even call it the 80’s “version” of The Graduate. Scenes like.. when they make love on a train, with Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight playing, then the score piece… the one where he grabs the bike and goes to her house… the ending, original or theatrical.. etc etc… brilliant! One of the most underrated films ever.
And yes, I wouldn’t even call Tom Cruise a top50 leading actor of all-time (even though he can definitely act)… but you gotta say he’s the GOAT movie star, definitely. He’s been having LEADING ROLES in box office hits since this one in 1983!! Hits as the star, in the 80’s, in the 90’s, in the 00’s, in the 10’s, and in the 20’s… that’s four different decades!! It’s either him or Clint Eastwood, I think. Tom at his best can’t mess with an actor like Mickey Rourke(who also had his “start” in the 80’s) at his best, as far as skill/talent/performance goes… but when it comes to being a star, yeah, he’s #1… whatever that’s worth, obviously.
Ah.... Rebecca. She can call me Ralph anytime 😁
Undoubtedly Tom cruise is the biggest movie Superstar in the world ❤️❤️
Tom the goat has a box office of 12.3 billion 🔥🔥🔥
Holy cow! Risky Business was the 3rd of 4 films of his in 1983. That's some pretty good odds that one of them would get him noticed. Also, maybe the fact that he was cast in 4 movies that year meant he was already in demand.
now I haven't seen every movie Harry Dean Stanton was in but every movie I saw him in kicked ass & he nailed his part, every time.
One of the best, most underrated actors ever! His performance in Paris Texas is to me top5 of all-time for a leading actor…
It's all about Repo Man. Just sayin.
I agree! Great film, even now! And thanks for mentioning Tangerine Dream! This film introduced me to them and I've never looked back since!
When I worked on MI:2 Tom Cruise bought Harley's for the stunt men to thank them for making him look good.
Risky Business is 40 years old!
Made over $63 million
I remember watching it back at my second house then seeing the rerelease at destiny
Still one of Tom Cruise's best
The movie works thanks to a talented performance by Cruise as a wild streak looking to break free, a nice soothing electronic score by Tangerine Dream, Rebecca de Mornay's charisma being a tantalizing mystery, and seeing that as a teenager you can start to find your true passions once you've got a taste of running things
There's that infamous dance scene too of Cruise we can never forget
Plenty of teen angst exploring dark themes
Yes it's quite problematic-depicting sex workers and it’s a product of the Regan era but it does capture certain truths being young while also relating to the emotional whiplash adolescent vibes
How many of us want everything to be safe and predictable so things don't go out of control?
Joel goes through heaven and hell paying the emotional price surrendering his innocence as well as financial not to mention the fantasies he has covering his anxieties
A terrific art-directed allusion to growing up thanks to Brickman making a lot of the camerawork having sensual undertones almost coming off as an erotic music video
Brickman turned his back on Hollywood after studio executives he admitted made him change the ending but it was still his first successful turn in the industry
Great ambiguity in the storytelling, two amazing leads, and a great sense of John Hughes-like sensibility acting as a smart, perceptive satire on the culture of money making as well as the end of innocence
Such an iconic movie, and Rebecca De Mornay is also fantastic in it. Shame that she never had a high profile career, like Cruise.
She was also very good in Guilty as Sin with Don Johnson from 1993. He plays a real psycho in it. Check it out
@@lindacollins903 Wow, never heard of that movie. I'm a big fan of DJ, would love to see him playing a real psycho lol
@@jeshkam You really should try to find it and watch. Don Johnson is his extremely good looking self, very smooth and well dressed, but a psycho just the same. I think he drew on his Sonny Burnett alter ego from Miami Vice when he had amnesia and was evil
@@lindacollins903 Yeah, I've known Miami Vice for 30+ years (first time they aired it in here in Poland was in September '89) but despite that there are many season 4 & 5 episodes that I haven't watched yet including the Sonny Burnett subplot. I guess the UFO and bull semen episodes were enough to put me off. Thanks for your recommendation, I'll try to find this movie asap. 😎👍
@@jeshkam I agree with you on the UFO and bull semen episodes being pretty bad, but some episodes of season 5 were really good. Have you ever seen the finale? Every time I see it, I get choked up. You can see that Don Johnson and PMT get emotional too. Let me know if you get to see Guilty as Sin
This movie takes me back.
"Who's the u-boat commander?" 🤣😂😁
Thanks Chris B & Joblo.....loved this and keep those interesting and insightful vdos coming...Cruise deserves all the accolades due to MAverick...def the last movie star in history...Risky Business is and will remain timeless
Tom Cruise also did the movie All The Right Moves in 1983...Thats an underrated Cruise movie that never gets talked about
It’s our next episode. Just recorded it the other day. A gem.
@@JoBloOriginals awesome my man, I look forward to that, nice to know its getting some recognition from you 👍
I really would have appreciated the original ending! And I enjoyed the music…Bob Seger, Prince (D.M.S.R.). It’s a pretty brilliant film.
That ending is on CZcams. It is definitely great.
This movie ruined Old Time Rock and Roll Just Like Wayne's World ruin Bohemian Rhapsody and The Sopranos ruined don't stop believing. I grew up in Michigan Big Bob Seger fan even before his silver bullet days.. I cannot stand old time rock and roll.
@@travismiles5885 I don't think a song being in a movie ruins the song lol
Rebecca De Mornay was a hottie!
She was equally as hot in "And God Created Woman". . .
Still is.
This movie makes me feel soooo good for whatever reason.
I was nine or ten when this movie came out and I remember watching it at a friend's house at a sleepover. It was the eighties after all. I was not aware of the alternate ending. As a preteen hormonal kid I would have preferred the original ending. Because the awkward goof gets the hot girl. But as a seasoned old gen xer the alternate ending is more true to life. That is a fact. They come and go. eventually you find your soulmate, but you will always remember that one.
Definitely the film you stayed up late to watch on HBO in the 80s!
De Mornay was unbelievably hot in this
saw RB in the theater and Losin It in a drive in movie theater.....when I was 8....with my grandma
Seriously? That's epic!!
Damn Harry! Good going! The whole movie did feel like a dream. It was amazing. Fun stuff from Curtis Armstrong as well. The XXX parody was pretty good too. ;P
One of my favorites all time
Great movie. Watch it multiple times each year.
Wow, I never saw Risky Business. I'll have to see it now.
'Lions for Lambs' and 'Knight and Day' were actually good movies.
I think the reason 'Lions for Lambs' flopped is because it's a small movie that came around when streaming was burgeoning and people weren't really going to the movies to see movies small anymore.
Similarly, 'Knight and Day' came around when superhero flicks were really starting to take over the big screens. The audience then, just like now, weren't really willing to take a chance on an action flick that wasn't part of a preexisting IP.
Knight and day is a parody and a comedy even though it is listed as an action film.
....and the movie that began my lifetime crush on the gorgeous Rebecca de Mornay ;).
Risky Business + Born on the Fourth of July + Color of Money ➡ arguably his best films 🎥
While Top Gun and MI franchise films may be greater box office draws by him...
I wish more people reacted to this classic!
Harry Dean Stanton had serious game.
No kidding eh?
The shot of the Elektron trinity near the end was kind of random but I liked it ;)
FYI that multi million dollar grin is actually his old original teeth. Not too long after Risky Business he gets his real teeth permanently replaced into the million dollar smile you are referring to.
Paul Brickman wrote The Bad News Bears Breaking Training, the Clint Eastwood film True Crime and the Chevy Chase debacle Deal of The Century!
Oh wow! This movie will be 40 next year and next month. I was 15 when it came out.
I feel old too, lol.
7:08 oh, so Muddy Waters gets no musical mention? The long line of prostitutes "door opening" scene is just as iconic as any other scene and 7 years later would be used again in the late Ray Liotta coke sniffing scene in Goodfellas.
Well, he didn’t mention the Prince song (D.M.S.R.). And the Police briefly but they aren’t on the soundtrack.
Or Jeff Beck's The Pump
He's gonna take me right into
the danger zone gonna take me right into the danger zone right into the
danger zone right into the danger zone .
I think about today's music is just doesn't have the same soul I like that old time rock and roll the kind of music just sooths my soul .
You had me at phil Collins
The Color of Money next please
The Girl Next Door starring Emile Hirsch
is a whole lot better than Risky Business.
With most people, genius and insanity has a thin line between them, with Tom Cruise they're the same thing.
My friend, please tell what is the name of the song playing in the background of the video? I like it.
Tom Cruise & Leonardo DiCaprio are ALWAYS in good movies. Daniel Day Lewis is probably the greatest actor of our generation and even he has had a few stinkers.
OMG Cruise really looks like Patrick Bateman on that thumbnail...:O now it all makes sense. Bale said he watched Tom Cruise footage when he was preparing for the role.
Rebecca De Mornay was priceless in this movie. I see her upcoming movie is called Peter Five Eight but it is staring Kevin Spacey. Like a movie with Spacey is going to happen?
Hell, that final scene of her in the knit top (and obviously nothing else underneath. . .) is almost as hot as the earlier nudie scene!
Losin It is pretty good. A younger Shelly Long is great in it.
Love this movie
His big movie was LEGEND! with Tim Curry
such a fun movie
2 different movies, 2 different fighter pilots later on in years and this is the only movie that brought them together... Risky Business.
Tom Cruise - Top Gun
Jason Gedrick - Iron Eagle
I Love The 80's
"Who's the U-boat commander?"
Oh, Rebecca DeMornay in this movie...
I remember this movie when I was 13 too young to see an R rated film.
he starts reviewing it at 2:35
...and the RayBan Sunglasses sales would never see the same...even now
Weren't the aviators he made famous in top gun also Rayban's???
@@wallyman292 Not sure but
not boxers... tighty whities
Homo-erotic ?
What did you think of the chick ?
I always thought this movie reminds me of Ferris Bueller's Day Out. Both cult classics but both leading characters who aren't exactly likeable looking back now
My only true reason for watching "Risky Business" is the lovely (Rebecca DeMornay)!!
He was also good in The Color of Money opposite Paul Newman
1.2 billion total collection today ........TGM
Personally I loved Lions for Lambs
The movie was everything funny, sexy, and awesome soundtrack.
That Movie was Big as a Teenager... It's still very good.
endless love was a few years prior to this tho
Release the Brickman cut!
I wonder if really good quality footage of the original exists?
In Taps, they weren't recruits, but cadets in an academy. Recruits are not kids
next year the film will turn 40
How much of that domestic $100 million goes to paying tom, doesn't he have massive sway at paramount pictues with his own office & team of yes men, i bet his banker is a scientologist & the church have control over all his money, why does he need cash when he can just point at something & say i want that, buy me a jet, super yacht, i want that house, all bought with toms money but owned on paper by the church, he lives in a bubble of yes men, he's not from the real world with every aspect of his personal life controlled & watched but he is a great actor & will go down as one of the greats but i doubt is child will receive 100% of his money & assets when he dies, you've got to pay for that billion year contract, how can a guy like tom cruise be blinded, duped & deceived so easily? it's truly unbelievable...
Ho boy, but do I remember Rebecca's role in this movie when it came out! Man, was she hot in this!
Prettiest 'working girl' I ever saw.
“Basically he’s no longer the naive suburban boy…”
Meanwhile all I’m thinking is NIPPLES!!!!
Yep!!! She wore that knit top well, didn't she!!! ;)
Maverick's name is Pete, not Maverick :P
He’ll always be Maverick to me
The shirt was always white. Where are those sunglasses?
Curse you Mandela Effect
And the revival of Ray-ban.
Hey, what happened to the hunter biden video?? I CANT FIND IT!
I thought de monary had left Tom for Leonard Cohen not Harry Dean Stanton
She dated both!
Those are tighty whities aka briefs not boxers lol
The Girl Next Door is better
than Risky Business.
No mention of A Nightmare on Elm Street thus your argument is invalid
What about all the right moves
The "getting naked" scene between him and Lea Thompson still excites me.
Well he certainly is a good 'action movie' actor but I wouldn't say he is a good character actor. Doesn't have the 'chops' for dramatic roles, he kinda shies away from them. Best one to date in that genre was 'Collateral' but he still had to have a lot of 'action' in it to make him feel comfortable.
The Firm.
Harrison Ford???
I'm totally showing this movie to my girlfriend who's never seen it... Im pretty sure she will be more than gratetrful...😈
Scientology.
Those are not boxers, they're whitey-tighties.
And it's my favourite Tom cruise movie before he sold his soul to the sciencetoligists
Fair enough. Though he does kept that horsesh*t out of his films.
You used the term Yuppie inappropriately. The term you should have used is "Preppie". Just sayin from someone who was 15 when this came out and was very aware of the difference between all cliques and cultural archetypes of the time. FWIW.
Guess is pays to worship L. Ron Hubbard
He wrote science fiction and was just fooling around. He didn't mean it !
Idiots abound. Not his fault.
So what you are saying is: if I ever go back in time I should make sure tom doesn't get this role and save the world from an actor that plays the same part in every role he gets. Thanks 👍
You should watch more of his movies then...
After learning about Scientology, I cannot be bothered to watch anything with Tom Cruise in it.
That's his private life - at least he's not pushing the woke agenda down our throats.
Tom has the good sense to not mix the rwo.
Don’t mix personal life with movies
I had forgotten about that movie; and forgotten that tiny Tom Cruise was already a fake and intolerable bag of crap 40 years ago.
Others would disagree with you, Grumpy
@@richardbonfiglio1765 Others also think Bud Light lime is super-tasty, so you never can tell.
I suggest we take a moderate approach: we crush the little creep in a giant press, and then if terrible movies and pedophilia in Hollywood are suddenly reduced significantly, we can admit I was right. If they are not reduced, I'll admit I was wrong and maybe he's not such a bad guy. I'll even pretend that he's a good actor, his insane laughter isn't brain-jarring and his teeth are properly centred on his face.
Taps made Tom Cruise. You are a fail, go to the back of the line and try again.
Still one of my personal favorite Tom Cruise flicks to this day (👏). As much as I love, well, “Love on a Real Train (🚆),” for me personally, it’s Tangerine Dream’s theme for Lana that gets me every time; listen to it, and it just SCREAMS ‘seduction (but in a classy way).’
