Multifidus Activation With The Deep Core

- The multifidus (or multifidi plural) may account for up to 2/3 of the muscular support of the spine. They are deep muscles that run the length of both the right and left sides of the spine and contribute to good postural tone. Studies have shown that they are often inhibited (smaller and weaker) on the side of the spine where there is a back injury and with scioliosis. There is a tendency to want to target the multifidus to improve spinal stability and decrease pain, but as postural muscles, they are not designed to function in isolation. The most beneficial and functional way to activate them is along with the other four deep core muscles. Additionally, when the multifidus is inhibited, it is not a because of a lack of strength; the problem is a communication issue between the muscles and the brain. This somatic yoga practice will help you to understand , find and "wake up" all four of the deep core muscles including the diaphragm, transversus abdominis, pelvic floor and multifidus.
