This is a great demo. I have a lot of California Coast Live Oak to split, which is knotty and stringy, like the wood you split at 7:20, and I am tired of doing it by hand (I get carried away and then need a while to recover... and I use my hands for a living, so I can't have that). Just bought a cheap electric hydraulic splitter and it sucks... so returning that and looking for a proper splitter. So far, this Super Splitter thing has my attention the most... I might be pulling the trigger here in a day or two.

We had a tree blow down this spring. The iPhone photo said it was a walnut, whitest walnut I’d ever seen. Anyway I though it was a hickory like the triple hickory in the back yard. Now I know I was correct. When I first cut it up, I hauled it around back to try to split it by hand. My 13 pound maul just bounced off it. Fast forward four month is it has dried out and cracked, 12” rounds split easily with my 8 pound maul. I always like to relax watching a super split in action.

Hi Joe! Glad to see you back at it. I hope that your vacation was a great one. That hickory sure made the super splitter groan. But it still got it done. I’ve only had my super splitter for 3/4 of a year, but I’m loving it. The hardest thing I split so far was some twisted cherry. It was a pretty straight tree, but the grain has quite a twist to. I couldn’t touch it with an axe. I would’ve been driving splitting wedges for a week just to process a 30’ tree. I know because I tried to split the larger rounds to get them on the production table. I ended up noodling them. Not bundle grade, but it’s nice cherry firewood now that it seasoned over the summer. Thanks for another great video Joe! I hope that you have a great day 👍🏻!

    • @ohiowoodburner

The totes are very good at making stacking and delivery easier and you can cut the top of the bladders off and use them as roofs to help protect the wood from excessive rain that we get in this area or in any area protecting from the rain you can use it as a hat just cut the top part off and the bottom and you can use one on the bottom the other on the top you can use the sides to make extra tops and bottoms as well to have extra on hand then they can easily be moved around you can do multiple totes for multiple species of tree firewood and keep it very much easier and more organized The less you have to manhandle the wood the more productive you can be

So happy to have another video from you where the "SuperSplit" is featured going through its paces. The company that manufactures these kenetic splitters offers three versions. I think it was established in another video that yours is the lightest-duty version.
Do you have any opinion on the other more heavy-duty versions that are offered by "SuperSplit"? The extra price differential is not all that much in addition. Thanks for your opinion in advance. Much appreciated.
I think I would definitely want the largest table that they have as an option.

    What about sharpening
    the SuperSplit?
You store most of your firewood by laying it on its side. Those rounds will dry much better if they are laid on their side because the rain will run off more and the ends are exposed to the drying air. When they are on their sides there is less contact with the damp ground.

    • @ohiowoodburner

      Sharpening would probably help.
I suppose a small angle grinder would do it. To avoid overheating the metal do not hold it in one spot but move it up and down all the time. Overheating can have a degrading effect on the durability of high carbon tempered steel.
I heard Andrew Easton say that sharpening his wedges will make them perform better but also make them more dangerous.
If you do sharpen it maybe you could also Implement a safety device to cover it and protect it (when not being used).
If the edge ever were dented, only grind out the dented part and not the whole edge. A little dip in the edge is fine.
At one time EastonMade sold their wedges sharp but then they switched over to selling them not so sharp because people are handling them so much. I know that you do not change wedges on your super split.

Same, I want a fast splitter but not sure if I should get the HD or SE with the bigger flywheel since I've split about 500 facecords in the past 2 yrs with a 30 ton splitter. Any model would be faster but is the 9hp SE worth the extra $ than the other 5.5 or 6.5hp super split?

@@ohiowoodburner thanks for the info. I have about an acre of trees to clear in Massachusetts. Mostly kind of crowded, spindly, but tall (i.e. good for firewood) oak, elm, and maple with a few ceders and pine thrown in for good measure. I'm getting tired of manually splitting and the inexpensive electric splitter, while impressive for what it is, is not gonna keep up. I'd like to get a unit for this and also some family members who routinely need tree work and neighbors give me free wood. I'm not looking to get in the business at least not yet.

Joe looks to me like you need a taller wedge on that splitter so you won’t have to turn the round over and run it thru a second time. Just a little time saver for you!

“That’s all I gotta say about that” is that a Forrest Gump quote ? Also I see you still have the plastic corners left in at the bottom of your IBC’s, if you give them a kick of your foot they’ll pop out for you. No major advantage but they do reduce air for the bottom firewood if not removed 👍
