  • Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy told FRONTLINE, “We don’t have a large number of police departments that are using our facial recognition technology.” He defended the company’s controversial sale of the tech to law enforcement saying, “We’ve never received any complaints of misuse. Let’s see if somehow they abuse the technology.”

3 mos. after this interview, Amazon imposed a one-year moratorium on police use of Rekognition (the facial recognition service of AWS). They extended that moratorium last May. Not saying the interviewer struck something but maybe he did haha.

Sooooo, the interviewer explicitly cites his experience with police departments misusing the tech, and he is still gonna say they haven't observed this misuse?
Why would you by default trust law enforcement when we have so much history of them misusing technology and lieing? And he admitted they have no idea the scope of the tech deployment and that they aren't monitoring its use.
    This is disgusting.

On facial and voice recognition technology, this man Andy Jassy proves an ignorant man -- very. 'Hasn't even listened to Amazon's own if former principal scientist Anima Anandkumar in that regard and with respect directly with law enforcement agencies, which are bulwarks of racism

@@shrey9660 Your opinion is on point -- not arrogant as much as astute and observant. Couple the likes of facial and voice recognition and then speculate on the implications to what China does and will continue to do as regards 5G and how it is used in terms of privacy and overall intrusions into the lives and mistreatments of its 1 billion plus citizens. This proves the acme of the totalitarianism state and mindset, increasingly ever-evidencing in the USA; this, with Amazon already enjoying what proves monopolistic.

“So long as it’s not against the law there’s no problem” that’s probably the same idea IBM had when they sold the Hollerith machines to the Nazis which were integral to organising the Holocaust - which was legal in Germany - same as human rights abuses are legal in Bahrain

"when we could fit the whole company in just one conference room"
He must be talking about before they were a company, when they produced slideware for getting investors, as I doubt their initial business, shipping books, were a handful of people who'd fit "in just one conference room".
    "let's see"

I disagree, he doesn't necessarily pick a side. He addresses an issue that is very relevant and that apparently does concern many people (personally i am all for cooperation with police and military). He is also acting in the pursuit of discovering the truth and informing the public.
Andy Jassy also counters the questions very well. That is probably why he was a suitable successor.
