A huge thing to remember that the video missed is that Kaiji takes place during Japan's Lost Decade. There WERE no decent paying jobs. You were lucky to have anything at all after the economic bubble burst. It's a huge aspect of why the people in these gambling games were so desperate. as a note, the reason why the door on the bridge stuff blew the guy back was NOT because it was trapped, it was because of air pressure differential, meaning the guy got blown off because the air pressure inside was greater than outside, causing a big gust of air. It's a cruel manipulation of physics. In the end, the only actual route out was not to charge forward but to instead take the hidden path. The whole thing was a psychological trap from beginning to end.
This is one of the best anime out there, I recommend everyone give it a watch! Both seasons are great, and the Manga continues from there with many more storylines!
Imo, kaijis "ability" can be explained off as karma. He helped ppl in the 1st 2 games and survived. Game 3 was his leftover good karma since there was only him and the game master, Game 4 he had no karma b/c he was in it for himself and revenge
Eh, it’s a thin premise that relies too much on “luck”. Kaiji is more about about learning to trust yourself and planning ahead than relying on lady luck to solve your problems. Remember that after he loses his fingers, Kaiji realizes that if he had thought it through, and didn’t trust in blind luck, he could’ve prevented the loss itself, but hyodo (the game master) saw through his cheat and then made his own luck from Kaiji’s mistake. It’s about creating your own luck, has nothing to do with karma. Although the themes of bonds being stronger than greed is in the anime.

Big brain move for the first game is to tell someone at the beginning who are afraid to give you their cards while they still have 3 stars. It guarantees them a win so they'll take it. Wait a while till there are desperate people with 2 stars and no cards, and trade them a new deck for a star. You get rid of all of yours and at the least you'll have 5 stars. And you'll even seem trustworthy because all you did was give people what they want and helped them

A GOD TIER anime that is grossly overlooked. In respects to gambling this and Kakegurui are the best I have seen BAR NONE. If there are others like it please tell me, I know the same writer has made others.

Akagi is a good one of the same author, you have to know mahjong tho. One Outs is great too, its a gambling anime with a baseball twist. If you like reading manga, liars game is also great.
For a second I was like “wait haven’t I already seen this” then realized like a lot of anime there are movies that are made as live action without the production being associated with the anime even though it’s literally the exact same thing
Kaiji is one of a kind. He is trusting of other people to a fault. Time and time again he is betrayed but he never loses that inherent kindness. He empathizes with even the most sinister of characters. [cough..kazuya] He has the courage to gamble even his own life away until he’s left with nothing but empty asahi cans and an ocean of tears. You can’t help but feel sorry for him. When he’s gambling, his clever ideas steal the show and suddenly everything is going his way! ..until it’s not, and he’s thrown in an underground hell. But somehow, out of sheer determination, he climbs out of it. Kaiji once said that he is a fool that even death cannot cure. A fool we love nonetheless. Seriously that lazy gambling junky has completely won me over.

Here are two mangas that you will definitely like if you love kaiji... Them being.. liar game and usogui both are amazing mangas with mind blowing mind games and tactics like in kaiji.. The only downside is that they start very slow but once they start going they are on par with kaiji.. Another aspect of them that you might not like is that they lack tension . What I mean by this is that the protagonists of both the series are so smart that you know that they will win everytime it's just about How they will win that makes these interesting. Definitely check them out HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
It's so underrated, this series. I started reading chapter 1 because I've seen some memes about it before, I thought I would stop reading after a few chapters at best because of the art style but I ended up binging 90 chapters in one sitting instead

This is how I would've played the first game: Take a loan of only one million yen and don't play any games. After half an hour, go into the break room and sell all of my cards for 100,000 yen each to the losers. After that I win the game with enough yen to pay off the interest and have some extra.

that was my issue with it too. I didn't feel any tension because by the third absolutely clown shoes thing kaiji did I stopped caring if he got hurt. I tried the manga to see if it was better, but no, it was worse lmao.
I generally feel the same way, and the same as I did with Squid Game. These people are here of their own free will because of choices they made that were also of their own free will. Even if somebody did ultimately end up winning a good chunk of money there is a good chance that they'd find a way to lose it just as fast. A fool and his money are easily parted, and there ain't no cure for stupid.

I agree. It's very unappealing to look at but also that's kind of the point. It would be shabby character design if these backstabbing lunatics looked really handsome or beautiful. Though I think the show could've used some female characters. There's no reason why a woman couldn't get in debt.

I will disagree with the "going first" Since the bar gets thinner every step, the initial parts of the bar will be crossed faster than the end, so everyone behind you will be walking faster than you
There were many ways to win each section. Among them trading people sets of cards from the start. If you offer Somone a set of three for a low price, then only four people have to accept and you automatically win. Also What everyone in the room failed to realize, is that everyone could have won the first game. With 100 players you have fifty pairs. If each pair plays all their cards face up, at the end of like 3 minutes you will have 100 players with 3 stars and no cards. Resulting in noone losing. As for the bridge, working is important. Both bridges state you can't touch with your hands. However you could fairly easily slink across on your chest, or even hang underneath, allowing all four limbs to be safely used. Beyond that however, wording is important. Hands. So you could wrap cloth around your hands and never break the rules. However with the first bridge I would go a step further and remove my shoes. Your flesh is going to naturally stick to the metal giving you better traction, as well as allowing you to use an asset built for that challenge. Your toes. Gymnasts perform in bare feet because it allows them to use the muscles and toes of their feet for better grip. Obviously for the second bridge you need your shoes, but if that current can't go through your shoes, then wrapping cloth around your hands is still the best option. Now e-card is just a stupid game. The emperor has two chances to win and the slave has 1. Meaning if you bet 1 every round, you should draw even and win money long before you get badly hurt, just by playing random cards without even looking. This forces your opponent to do the same making strategy and cheating utterly useless. Realizing this, the game Master would likely arrange for the game to be ended immediately. The lottery is the obvious issue. There's no way to win that. The old man is an expert Cheater and expert at slight of hand. Unless you go first, you can't win. And even then your going up against a hardened criminal so you lose anyway. The only way to win, was to use the accumulated winnings from all the small victories to pay the debt and walk out. You have no reason to seek revenge. Most loan sharks would have broken half your body and taken your relatives and sx slaves. These guys gave you a legit chance to pay it back and even come out on top.

But I've thought about the selling cards strategy before, I agree that's good. Bridge: I doubt that loophole would fly, since the judges are human. They'd still disqualify you for using cloth-wrapped hands. E-Card: One of their rules is to prevent the exact scenario you described. How you select your card doesn't matter, but, you must look at the card before you play it. So there's no way to completely eliminate the mind games aspect. Lottery: Bit of a special case - Hyodo is a wealthy man, the amounts he's betting are trivial to him. All he's interested in is human struggle, so it wouldn't interest him to win the game without giving you a chance, so you know your hopes are non-zero. When drawing first, he sacrificed a chance to win in order to present Kaiji a challenge to think on his feet. Coming to the conclusion that Hyodo marked the winning ballot was entirely possible had he stayed calm and thought harder.
In the first game, there are 103 contestants. And you have to worry about the repeaters since they absolutely need 4 stars instead of 3. Human greed will always win versus reason and the betterment of others. It's highly unlikely people will try to draw and help each other win. (Shoot Kaiji could have pretended to draw for the first 3 cards with Funai and played a winning card once the time was right.) Your first scenario is better, since, in the anime, within the first 10 minutes, someone lost all their stars. (And the debt accrues at a rate of 1.5% every 10 minutes) The best scenario for Kaiji is to look for someone on a losing streak (1-2 stars and few cards) and offer them all of his cards, and maybe a few million yen if they think the cards alone don't make a good offer. For the first bridge the best strategy is to go first. Kaiji has been able to maintain his balance and only fell cause someone tried to push him and he slipped. For the second bridge like you said the best option is to wrap clothes around your hands. You would be disqualified, but it's still better than dieing. And there's also the wind trap at the end. Kaiji was privy enough to notice that something was wrong when he saw all the smiling people inside. Eventually Kaiji would try to look for an alternate route and find the glass path. E-card. Now, ideally you could pretend to look at your cards and try to do things to make your heart race. It's not a guarantee, but the idea is if Tonegawa thinks you might play what you think is a winning card, your heart race increases and he will act accordingly based on that. What you want to do, is put some kind of marking on the slave and emperor cards(I.e, using your fingernails to put a small tiny dent on the bottom), so that only you know which is which. This might not work, since Tonegawa was able to notice the blood stains in the anime and frequent- ally put his card down after Kaiji had put his down, but it could potentially be used against him. Tissue Lottery. If Hyodo was truly ruthless he could have pulled the right ballot on his first try. But he wanted to see Kaiji suffer. When Kaiji inserted his hand, he should have realised something was wrong and try to feel each ballot and try to feel for some kind of difference, like a crease, or a difference in texture, since he drew on the paper with a marker. If you think about it, Kaiji was fucked no matter what. If he went first and won, Hyodo would correctly assume he cheated and refuse to give him the money. If he went second and won, even if he found the creased ticket or his crumpled up cheat-ballot, I doubt Hyodo would let him get the 100 million yen. He should have just took his 20 mill and dipped.

Kaiji is the fucking man, the steel frame crossing narration didn't display what he actually thinks, he's about to push, he's inch away from doing it, but he didn't, because that's the line he will NEVER EVER cross, he kept his humanity, he don't see himself as the victim, he don't justify his wrong doing and hurting others who did nothing wrong. That's why Kaiji is. The. Fucking. Man. And the reason Kaiji take the gamble because he knows, he knows fucking well, if he didn't win now, his whole life will just be an endless never ending hell of meaninglessness, that's why i like Kaiji. Not to be rude or anything but I would of preferred this video be put on the anime channel and have no upload on this channel, Not to say these videos are bad but it’s kinda a let down when you click on a cinema summary video and it’s not cinema summary.

This will get the opponent thinking. since paper beats rock, they will think that you think they will play paper, but then you will play scissors to beat them. Therefore, they should play rock. but, if you say this right before throwing, they will be overwhelmed by the quick thinking pace that they will play scissors because it's the last thing they will be thinking of before throwing. even if they do get to the 'I should play rock' part, it will still be a tie, but it's better then losing. another strategy is to know this, Very few people play paper first. so find someone at the beginning, give them no time to think, and play rock. Either it will be a tie, or rock will crush scissors. If you win, play paper, because they won't play scissors again, and instead will change it, either to paper or rock. repeat this until they have no stars left. see? game of strategy. (sorry if i'm being nerdy, I was a finalist in a school rock-paper-scissors tournament)
It seems like the foolproof plan to make it through would just be to wait for someone to have zero cards but 1 or 2 stars, approach them and say "Take all my cards" as you walk through with exactly three stars never having played a game. Not like they are in a position to decline. They either accept or lose.

A huge thing to remember that the video missed is that Kaiji takes place during Japan's Lost Decade. There WERE no decent paying jobs. You were lucky to have anything at all after the economic bubble burst. It's a huge aspect of why the people in these gambling games were so desperate. Mother's Basement does some amazing videos on Kaiji, and goes into this if you're interested in learning more.

as a note, the reason why the door on the bridge stuff blew the guy back was NOT because it was trapped, it was because of air pressure differential, meaning the guy got blown off because the air pressure inside was greater than outside, causing a big gust of air. It's a cruel manipulation of physics.
In the end, the only actual route out was not to charge forward but to instead take the hidden path. The whole thing was a psychological trap from beginning to end.
This is one of the best anime out there, I recommend everyone give it a watch! Both seasons are great, and the Manga continues from there with many more storylines!

Imo, kaijis "ability" can be explained off as karma. He helped ppl in the 1st 2 games and survived. Game 3 was his leftover good karma since there was only him and the game master, Game 4 he had no karma b/c he was in it for himself and revenge
Eh, it’s a thin premise that relies too much on “luck”. Kaiji is more about about learning to trust yourself and planning ahead than relying on lady luck to solve your problems.
Remember that after he loses his fingers, Kaiji realizes that if he had thought it through, and didn’t trust in blind luck, he could’ve prevented the loss itself, but hyodo (the game master) saw through his cheat and then made his own luck from Kaiji’s mistake.
It’s about creating your own luck, has nothing to do with karma. Although the themes of bonds being stronger than greed is in the anime.

Kaiji is one of a kind. He is trusting of other people to a fault. Time and time again he is betrayed but he never loses that inherent kindness. He empathizes with even the most sinister of characters. [cough..kazuya]
He has the courage to gamble even his own life away until he’s left with nothing but empty asahi cans and an ocean of tears. You can’t help but feel sorry for him. When he’s gambling, his clever ideas steal the show and suddenly everything is going his way! ..until it’s not, and he’s thrown in an underground hell. But somehow, out of sheer determination, he climbs out of it.
Kaiji once said that he is a fool that even death cannot cure. A fool we love nonetheless. Seriously that lazy gambling junky has completely won me over.

Them being.. liar game and usogui both are amazing mangas with mind blowing mind games and tactics like in kaiji..
The only downside is that they start very slow but once they start going they are on par with kaiji..
Another aspect of them that you might not like is that they lack tension . What I mean by this is that the protagonists of both the series are so smart that you know that they will win everytime it's just about How they will win that makes these interesting.

I will disagree with the "going first"
Since the bar gets thinner every step, the initial parts of the bar will be crossed faster than the end, so everyone behind you will be walking faster than you
There were many ways to win each section. Among them trading people sets of cards from the start. If you offer Somone a set of three for a low price, then only four people have to accept and you automatically win. Also What everyone in the room failed to realize, is that everyone could have won the first game. With 100 players you have fifty pairs. If each pair plays all their cards face up, at the end of like 3 minutes you will have 100 players with 3 stars and no cards. Resulting in noone losing.
As for the bridge, working is important. Both bridges state you can't touch with your hands. However you could fairly easily slink across on your chest, or even hang underneath, allowing all four limbs to be safely used. Beyond that however, wording is important. Hands. So you could wrap cloth around your hands and never break the rules. However with the first bridge I would go a step further and remove my shoes. Your flesh is going to naturally stick to the metal giving you better traction, as well as allowing you to use an asset built for that challenge. Your toes. Gymnasts perform in bare feet because it allows them to use the muscles and toes of their feet for better grip. Obviously for the second bridge you need your shoes, but if that current can't go through your shoes, then wrapping cloth around your hands is still the best option.
Now e-card is just a stupid game. The emperor has two chances to win and the slave has 1. Meaning if you bet 1 every round, you should draw even and win money long before you get badly hurt, just by playing random cards without even looking. This forces your opponent to do the same making strategy and cheating utterly useless. Realizing this, the game Master would likely arrange for the game to be ended immediately.
The lottery is the obvious issue. There's no way to win that. The old man is an expert Cheater and expert at slight of hand. Unless you go first, you can't win. And even then your going up against a hardened criminal so you lose anyway. The only way to win, was to use the accumulated winnings from all the small victories to pay the debt and walk out. You have no reason to seek revenge. Most loan sharks would have broken half your body and taken your relatives and sx slaves. These guys gave you a legit chance to pay it back and even come out on top.
In the card game, there are repeaters which already played before, they have an extra rule of requiring 4 stars instead of 3.
Restricted RPS: As previous poster said, all repeaters require 1 extra star to win, so an all-player victory's not possible. But I've thought about the selling cards strategy before, I agree that's good.
Bridge: I doubt that loophole would fly, since the judges are human. They'd still disqualify you for using cloth-wrapped hands.
E-Card: One of their rules is to prevent the exact scenario you described. How you select your card doesn't matter, but, you must look at the card before you play it. So there's no way to completely eliminate the mind games aspect.
Lottery: Bit of a special case - Hyodo is a wealthy man, the amounts he's betting are trivial to him. All he's interested in is human struggle, so it wouldn't interest him to win the game without giving you a chance, so you know your hopes are non-zero. When drawing first, he sacrificed a chance to win in order to present Kaiji a challenge to think on his feet. Coming to the conclusion that Hyodo marked the winning ballot was entirely possible had he stayed calm and thought harder.
In the first game, there are 103 contestants. And you have to worry about the repeaters since they absolutely need 4 stars instead of 3. Human greed will always win versus reason and the betterment of others. It's highly unlikely people will try to draw and help each other win.
(Shoot Kaiji could have pretended to draw for the first 3 cards with Funai and played a winning card once the time was right.)
Your first scenario is better, since, in the anime, within the first 10 minutes, someone lost all their stars. (And the debt accrues at a rate of 1.5% every 10 minutes) The best scenario for Kaiji is to look for someone on a losing streak (1-2 stars and few cards) and offer them all of his cards, and maybe a few million yen if they think the cards alone don't make a good offer.
For the first bridge the best strategy is to go first. Kaiji has been able to maintain his balance and only fell cause someone tried to push him and he slipped.
For the second bridge like you said the best option is to wrap clothes around your hands. You would be disqualified, but it's still better than dieing. And there's also the wind trap at the end. Kaiji was privy enough to notice that something was wrong when he saw all the smiling people inside. Eventually Kaiji would try to look for an alternate route and find the glass path.
E-card. Now, ideally you could pretend to look at your cards and try to do things to make your heart race. It's not a guarantee, but the idea is if Tonegawa thinks you might play what you think is a winning card, your heart race increases and he will act accordingly based on that. What you want to do, is put some kind of marking on the slave and emperor cards(I.e, using your fingernails to put a small tiny dent on the bottom), so that only you know which is which. This might not work, since Tonegawa was able to notice the blood stains in the anime and frequent- ally put his card down after Kaiji had put his down, but it could potentially be used against him.
Tissue Lottery. If Hyodo was truly ruthless he could have pulled the right ballot on his first try. But he wanted to see Kaiji suffer. When Kaiji inserted his hand, he should have realised something was wrong and try to feel each ballot and try to feel for some kind of difference, like a crease, or a difference in texture, since he drew on the paper with a marker.
If you think about it, Kaiji was fucked no matter what. If he went first and won, Hyodo would correctly assume he cheated and refuse to give him the money. If he went second and won, even if he found the creased ticket or his crumpled up cheat-ballot, I doubt Hyodo would let him get the 100 million yen. He should have just took his 20 mill and dipped.
Tonegawa explicitly said you have to look at the card before playing in E-Card.
For the second method in the first game, that method is what happened with funai and kaiji and look where that got kaiji to.

Kaiji is the fucking man, the steel frame crossing narration didn't display what he actually thinks, he's about to push, he's inch away from doing it, but he didn't, because that's the line he will NEVER EVER cross, he kept his humanity, he don't see himself as the victim, he don't justify his wrong doing and hurting others who did nothing wrong.

Rock papor scissors isn't a game of luck or chance like many people say. it's a game of strategy. my favorite strategy is to say, right before throwing, "I'm going to throw rock." This will get the opponent thinking. since paper beats rock, they will think that you think they will play paper, but then you will play scissors to beat them. Therefore, they should play rock. but, if you say this right before throwing, they will be overwhelmed by the quick thinking pace that they will play scissors because it's the last thing they will be thinking of before throwing. even if they do get to the 'I should play rock' part, it will still be a tie, but it's better then losing.
another strategy is to know this, Very few people play paper first. so find someone at the beginning, give them no time to think, and play rock. Either it will be a tie, or rock will crush scissors. If you win, play paper, because they won't play scissors again, and instead will change it, either to paper or rock. repeat this until they have no stars left.

It seems like the foolproof plan to make it through would just be to wait for someone to have zero cards but 1 or 2 stars, approach them and say "Take all my cards" as you walk through with exactly three stars never having played a game. Not like they are in a position to decline. They either accept or lose.
Thats probably the best plan, especially since you could exchange your stars for money once you go upstairs

for the thing on the bridge why didn’t they just sit down on it a scooch over to the end u won’t have to worry that much about it shrinking and if ur like me and have giant feat it helps a lot and then all u have to do is pull someone’s leg if they still decide to be dumb and stand. and if someone pushes u, u will most likely just lean forward unless they they try and sit down but would be hard to do without ur hands touching it and would hurt like hell if i decide to jump up and spread there legs. so u should just decide to be the last person to go and sit down so everyone else would have a hard time tryna copy u unless there close to the beginning. and it’s easier to push ppl down and if someone decides to turn around to push u they risk losing balance
There's a problem you can't sit and scooch to the finish on the first steel beam, you will be disqualified and risking 20 mil or 10 mil.
