In Slovakia we don't have Dedo Mráz. He is actually in Russia and part of old slav culture mostly for East Slavs. We have st. Mikuláš which is bishop who gives sweets to kids and at 24th of December we celebrate birth of Jesus who also gives gifts at the same day (for countries as Slovakia, Czech rep. Austria, Hungary and so on. Just like Santa Claus in other countries. But anyways great video ;)

Even if you say Dedo Mráz, people know what you mean. I'd say it's more like a synonym, tough more accurately Svätý Mikuláš or just Mikuláš.

Only christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. Non-christians tend to tell their kids that Santa brings the presents even on the 24th. :)

I also never liked Deva and Kofila, but I loved Margot. :) I liked Vesna the most, it's wafers with some kind of vanilla cream, but I haven't had it in like 8 years because I'm also vegan. It's one of the few things I miss.

Fortunately, chrumky are vegan! I've been vegan for 3 years now but my fav used to be Mila, Kofila and Kavenky :D There are some vegan options here where I live now so that's great! Are there any good vegan snacks in Slovakia? Haven't visited my family since summer 2019 :(

@@strongeronplants I don't know of many sweet ones sold in common supermarkets, mabye some accidentally vegan chocolate or müsli bars. I don't eat many snacks in general, but when i do, it's mostly chips, nuts and fruit. Or I make my own cakes. But in healthshops there are lots of options. For example Vego, a simple chocolate bar with hazelnuts, but oh my, so delicious.^^ What are the snack options where you live right now?

Saint Nicolas or in Slovak: Svätý Mikuláš, is a real historical figure. He was a Catholic bishop of Myra in the 4th century, known for his generosity, charity and care for the poor. The day of his celebration is on 6th December as it was rightly mentioned, and it's connected with the tradition of gifting children sweets, nuts or fruit as a reward for their good behaviour, and the kids are told that it's Saint Nicolas who's gifting them.
More about him and the tradition: www.stnicholascenter.org/who-is-st-nicholas
On the other hand, Santa Claus is more of a fictional character, a developed concept based on Saint Nicolas and other factors. The two mainly differ in clothing as well as in the time of their gift giving and their historical ‘existence’. St. Nicolas wears the common celebratory vestments of a bishop with a mitre (the sharp pentagonal hat) and usually holds the crosier to depict the fact that he is a bishop, whereas Santa wears a red coat and a hat with a pompom.
In Slovakia, on the eve of December 24th, traditionally, little Jesus secretly brings the gifts.
Дед Мороз or Dedo Mráz is a Russian and Eastern Slavic fictional figure who brings the gifts, although this figure does not enjoy much recognition in Slovakia besides in the film Mrázik (1964), which has become a traditional movie watched particularly during the Christmas season.
