    It should be mentioned that only about a week before this video was released, the original creators of City of Heroes gave their blessing for the open source code being distributed to allow players to continue playing on their own servers. There's nothing the devs can do to officially bring the game back, but this is absolutely a win for game preservation, as they have given the go-ahead for the community to keep going.

      God tier. One of those games that you just had to play. It didn’t offer a lot as far as content and customization, but it was down right fun! You simply overlooked what wasn’t there and enjoyed what was.

      I'm willing to bet if it was more polished, less buggy, and, most importantly, better lawyers, there would have been no issues with the license. In short, it is on the devs for not doing their job right and cutting corners.

    • @cainekass
      @cainekass Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@AFLoneWolfyeah that's how lawsuits over licences work. If it wasn't buggy the lawyers fighting for the ownership for their client would have agreed on that to keep going but nothing else..smh

      @AFLoneWolf lol like wtf xD. Dude the devs are not at fault its the dude who lied about owning the ip then gave them his blessing to use said ip that was the problem. They basically could only fix game breaking stuff after the lawsuit.

    If anybody remembers _The Orange Box_ I think we need a new version of that just so people can get their own version of PT. Just bundle it (for free) in with a couple of other short games that actually have their licensing ducks in order, so that whoever publishes it can claim that their profits are coming from those other games, and none coming from PT. I dunno: _something_ to appease the lawyers, because that teaser is one of the greatest games ever made, and it's just languishing in lawyer Hell. It's tragic when we are denied great art because some lawyer is getting paid to make it happen.

    • @kingjamos2422
      @kingjamos2422 Před 7 měsíci

      I highly doubt that, which is a shame. Vendetta wasn't particularly great, but it was enjoyable. Fight for NY, however, was fantastic and I loved how the fighting styles for the created characters worked. You could eventually get three different styles, but the order that you got them would essentially determine how that character fought. Making it so that you can have characters with all the same fighting styles play entirely different from each other. Not to mention, I dislike rap, but the game was presented so well that it would suck you into that world. There I was singing a DMX song while decked out in some serious bling beating up DMX. Good times.

    I'm still sad to this day over the closing of the PS3 multiplayer shooter MAG. The fact that we had a game that could handle 128v128 play on a PS3 with minimal lag was phenomenal, even more so when you consider at the time I was using my neighbor's wi-fi and it still ran beautifully. I never was a fan of FPS PvP games, but that one finally hooked me. I made friends via it that I still can contact to this day and it's sad that I really feel like we haven't seen anything in the online FPS space since that's been able to handle itself as well as that game had.

I'm sure it was a fun game and all, but I wanted a single player story narrative like the rest of the series. Mainly wanting to see the series reach its natural conclusion. The likelihood that will ever happen is quite bleak, sadly. Irony is that I was also bummed out by Nosgoth going under. I felt that it would at least keep the series alive in some form. Sometimes, these things can change, though, so don't give up hope! For the longest time, there was no legal way to play Creatures 3 on PC, released in 1999, EVEN IF you had the hardware at home. The is because after installing the game, you were required to download a patch from the Docking Station some time after the original game released. The thing is, the Docking Station was no longer online and there were no other ways to legally download the patch, so even if you had the game installed via CD and adjusted your PC in order to play it, you couldn't. Let alone legally acquire new Norn, Ettin or Grendel breeds etc.
    And nowadays, the game is on Steam and actively supported due to it's still thriving community and Modders, available for like 6€ :) It's really nice to be able to just buy, install and play it when the gamer nostalgia hits. So yeah, there is always a chance, even for 20+ year old games to be supported once again!

It was an mmorpg similar to free realms (rip that goated mmorpg too) but it was based around the lego tv shows that we’re going on at the time. It was a genuinely amazing game and it only shut down because they didn’t really incorporate or incentivize micro transactions making it unprofitable. I remember the last weekend it was open they gave everyone every rare object in the game including a jet pack that would let you fly outside the games barriers. I thought it was hilarious flying around the map and going to all the places I shouldn’t be. Honestly those last 24 hours were just as good as the years before it. I miss that game so much

    The fact that "no longer playable" is the fate of most online multiplayer/always online games is a large part of why I'm not interested in them. I love that I can pick up any of the games I've gotten since the 80's and play them today; it would bother me to no end to get really into a game and then just have to accept it when one day either a server gets shut down or the player base dissolves, and my beloved pastime effectively ceases to exist.

    I know most people would disagree with this but in my opinion copyrights should expire if a game/movie official distribution stops after a couple years. For example if drywall studios put out a game called watching paint dry in 2024 and stops production in 2026 the said IP becomes public domain after maybe 3 years. Another example if a steaming service cancels a show, it should go to fair use as they are not loosening profits. Looking at you Disney and Netflix.

      There's still games unplayable through emulation, whether they are too new of systems (ps4/xbone and on), or the current emulators we have can't emulate them, due to how the games use the original hardware or some other reason. Not everything is available to emulate, which means games unpreserved.

    Nosgoth TRUE story:
    The gam was running amazingly and was super popular for years in alpha and beta. Then Developer Psyonix decided to disconnect from Steam matchmaking and try to make their own matchmaking. Their matchmaking system was so bad it took 25 mins MINIMUM to get into a game so players started to dwindle off and wait for the fix that Psyonix promised would come to the matchmaking system.
    Then Psyonix's other little game "Rocket League" started to take off and they completely abandoned all work on Nosgoth and never fixed the terrible matchmaking system so when SquareEnix said it was being shut down because of lack of players we all went "we would play if we physically could, but you broke it and never fixed it!"
    This is why I boycott Rocket League, because Psyonix took my money for the Founders edition and then ran away with it and abandoned the game.

    Dnt say Gunmedia didnt get their IP ducks in a row cause they did. The game was originally a love letter to the franchise and called summer camp and had a completely different killer but the people who thought they owned the IP messages the developers and said they had the right to use the Friday The 13th name and likeness of Jason Vorhees. Gun Media was just caught in the middle of it all. So it was the studios and Cunningham who didnt have their IP ducks in a row not Gun Media

    While piracy shouldn't be openly encouraged for legal reasons, these are actually examples of when it's okay. Archivists since the beginning have allowed games and roms to be accessible for when they're virtually unavailable by any other legal mean, and when it becomes abandonware it is free use to utilize. That's what the medium was created for, for preservation.
