  • PLEASE make sure you CHECK if your old key-fob has a chip inside the remote - "tiny little black piece", IF you have it make sure you switch it to your NEW key-fob, Not all key fobs have it, so check and switch it if you have it!

I'm so glad this showed up as my first search result because it saved me a lot of trouble.
The only issue I had was that the old key fob did NOT open up and shatter as easily as the one in this video did - I had to spend significant time and force to slowly bend the case open using different tools.
If you run into the same issue, make sure you keep your tools as close as possible to the spot indicated in the video (the deeper area by the key) so you don't damage the electronics! (And of course be careful not to injure yourself.)
Excellent video with great detailed advice - thank you!

Thank you, thank you for the step-by-step video! You saved me lots of money!
The dealership wanted over $200 + reprogramming, so more like $325 for one fob.
There is no programming involved. It has a tiny circuit board that works with the battery.

Fantastic how-to video !! You are correct when you talk about all the music and nonsense in most how-to videos, while they don't explain all the details about what they're doing, very unprofessional. Thank you for your clear, concise and most importantly, detailed explanation of the task, and why certain things are important and other things are not.

Worked perfect for my Kia Soul. I put the needle nose plyers in the hole but could not get it to pop open. Tried several times. Then I used slip ring plyers and POP, it opened. So instead of pulling the needle nose apart, the slip ring plyers are backwards and you squeeze them to spread apart. But now my key-fob is brand new! I even replaced the CR3032 battery since I already had it open. Thank you so much! Ron in Oklahoma.

Hi there! Thank you so much for helping me with this setup. I did notice that the key section of the fob has actual alignments for the internals so you don't have to fidget the key internals to keep them in the middle, which made putting it together super simple. You are right. The circuit board fits snugly into the other half of the fob, the half you first put the metal key in with the circular battery cut out. The two small slots top and bottom fit into plastic tabs so well that the circuit board doesn't move. Clicking the two halfs of the fob together is simple when you do this first.

What a GREAT video. Finally....somebody who explains it the RIGHT way. You enabled me to switch the old key (shaft) from two beat-up Hyundai (2013) Santa Fe key fobs over to new ones I got on Amazon for super cheap! Even just getting the keys laser cut was going to cost a fortune.
HERE'S A TIP FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T GET THE KEY TO "POP OPEN" EASILY AFTER INSTALLING THE ORIGINAL KEY SHAFT INTO THE NEW CASE:
After the first key changeover, I found that the fit was "too tight" on the new fob for the key to flip open. You could manually pull it out, but it still wouldn't pop open. (I also trimmed down the plastic where the tip of the key goes into the slot on the new fob...the original key was a hair longer than the new Amazon model, so I just used a razor knife to trim a small amount of plastic at the very end of the slot and the key could fit into the slot properly. BUT STILL, IT WOULDN'T POP OPEN.
I discovered that the original key's hole (that fits down over the plastic hub where the spring locks in) is just a tiny bit smaller (in diameter) than the aftermarket one, so the key wouldn't sit all the way down on that hub when it's put back together. The top hub (top cover) fits fine, but that bottom hub where the spring locks in was just the smallest bit too thick (or wide) for the original key to sit completely flat.
I used a dremel tool to remove just a tiny bit of the thickness of the plastic hub (circle) that the key sits down onto, and then was finally able to get the original key to lay flush. I worked the key back and forth a bit to further make the fit better, then put it back together. Now, the key fits flush and pops open perfectly. Not sure if was just the specific aftermarket key fobs I bought, but for those who can't get the origijnal key shaft to pop open when you press the button, this may work for you. REMEMBER, JUST REMOVE A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF PLASTIC FROM THE THICKNESS OF THAT PLASTIC ROUND "HUB." Don't destroy the hub itself or the key could pop out of the fob. Just make it a little thinner (narrower wall) and use the key to judge when you've taken enough off (when the key sits flat in there against the case.) Hope this helps.
Thanks again, Wiki universE for a great step-by-step video.
NOTE: My 2013 Santa Fe keys did not contain a transponder chip, so it only required me to change the circuit board, battery and the key shaft itself from the old to the new.

Thank you so much for the video!!! Really helpful!!! I would like to mention something extra that I noticed and made the process easier: I placed the motherboard on the other part instead of the one you are showing in the video. On the other part, two plastic pins guide the motherboard (chip) at the correct position and thus, you don't need to center the motherboard manually. Of course, I acknowledge that some key shells might be different than others. For my case, these plastic pins helped me a lot on the motherboard allignement.

Very nice video as I've watched a few. However you failed to disclose that some fobs (depending on the Country you're in) have a chip in the lower corner that you may have to transfer to your new fob, or your ignition won't start. So remember to check your make and model people, so you know if you have to also get the chip out also. You might also want to keep your Kia emblem from the old fob, so get a drop of super glue and just remove the old one with a tiny screwdriver and transfer it over.

6'12 - you say : "it doesn't click enywhere" - yes, you're right, because you tried to click it into the wrong part. This electronic board (the green part) clicks without any problems to the second black part of the body - where you istall the battery. I did it and it was so easy. Next thing: you didn't mention about taking out the immobilizer sensor and placing it into new shell. I did all operations, as you showed, and everything was ok, I could lock and unlock my car, but I couldn't start the engine because immobilizer placed in my car did not "see" the sensor, which I didn't fix naturally. Luckily I asked my friend who repairs cars and he told me about that. Anyway - thank you for professional instruction!!!! Andy.

I have a used 2013 Kia Soul I recently purchased. I attempted to open the fob with needle-nose pliers and wasn't able to. Felt like I applied enough force to break a pair of handcuffs. Couldn't get it. -EDIT- Ok. So I went into the garage and dug out the dremel and carefully breached the case. It appears that this is either a replacement case, or the original where they had accidently damaged it when opening to replace the battery. It was sealed shut with some heavy duty black adhesive. Still took some prying with a big flat head screwdriver to open it enough to split it by hand. Swapped everything left the mobo in the half that has the plastic wedge to align it. Put it back together and the battery wasn't tight enough, so I folded some electrical tape and placed it on the battery to force it down. Works great now. Thanks for the video.
Just thought I'd mention this for anybody wondering why their case might not be popping open with ease like the replacement or the video.

Just swapped my keyfob for a Kia Ceed 2011. Excellent video although I found it easier to attach the circuit board to the opposite side to you do in the video. There's actually some plastic notches on that side which marry up to the circuit board. Also if you have an immobiliser in the key fob, there's two parts to it. There's a white plastic part which is a cover, it's not the imobiliser part. The imobiliser is underneath the plastic cover and is like a small black magnet. It's easy to think the white plastic part is whats needed, but as I found, it's the magnet underneath which is the essential part. Easily mistaken as part of the plastic case.
I had to transfer the blade as my old key fob had snapped near where the pin is. But the replacement key fob I got, doesn't quite align with the hole so it's impossible to re-insert the pin without possibly bending or breaking it. I've left without for now as it's held pretty secure without the pin. Thanks

One small thing I did notice when working on mine, however, is that while the motherboard doesn't "snap in" to the bottom of the keyfob, on mine at least, it did fit right in to a small niche on the top (the side where you are pressing the spring). That made it easier to be sure the motherboard was in the right place. It wasn't as good of a fit was it was in the old key fob, but it was there.

Thanks for sharing. I thrown my old keyfob in the dustbin then I wasn't able to start the car after key replacement. Then I read your comment and found the grayish chip from the dustbin. The car was started when I installed the chip in the new fob. This should have been explained in the video though. Thanks!

I just did the mistake. I followed carefully the vide and I wasn't bright enough to ask myself what's that little piece of extra plastic in my bag. This was the infamous chip. So the car wouldn't start. So I started the whole process and put the chip back. Guess what, the car wouldn't start either. Guess since the ignition didn't recognize the key in the first attempt to start the engine, it blocked or disengaged or reinitialized the chip. Now I must go th the dealer who sait he could reinitialize the damn thing. Well reinitializing is less expansive than 400$+ for a new fob. Mr Wiki, please include this information in a renewed video. Thanks for helping through though.

Very well explained video. I had to laugh listening to you, because of your frustration with some CZcams videos. I've found many that play background music or use text overlay instead of talking. I'll watch whole videos, looking for an answer to one particular thing only to have that one detail I'm looking for completely skipped. Just replacing the shell of a FOB "should" work, but I'm in the process of doing this where it didn't work due to slight differences with the old shell and new. Instead of getting just a replacement shell, I ordered a new FOB with a new key and board included.
Plan A: I was going to simply find someone to cut the key on the new FOB and then program the board myself. Quick and easy. Even though it would be an additional expense, it would still be much cheaper than buying a new FOB from a dealer. Called a lot of places and wasn't able to find anyone willing to do it without buying a new FOB from them.
Plan B: There is a little push pin that holds the keys in place without having to take the case apart and switch all of the parts like in your video. Then I would just have to do an easy programming of the new FOB board. Getting the pin out of the new FOB key proved to be frustrating, but I finally got it out. I basically destroyed the pin getting it out, but I thought I could use the pin from my old FOB key once I swapped them. Then I noticed (too late) that the pins that held each key in were different sizes, as were the holes the pins went into, so that wasn't going to work.
Plan C: This is what you're showing in your video and where I'm at now. The first problem I ran into was what you said about the new button and spring not working in the new shell. So yes, I did the same and used the old ones. Problem solved? Nope. My next problem was that the old button would not fit through the new shell button hole. So I did a slight modification by slightly reaming the new shell button hole out a bit with a rat tail file. Problem solved? Nope. The buttons have 3 tabs on them that should fit inside the new shell, but after examining the tabs on the old button and the new one, I found they were off by about a millimeter. Now, it still won't work because the button tabs on the old button don't align with the slots in the new shell. So I'm very close at this point, but have to find some way to do another modification to the new shell. At least my old board in the new shell is working, it's just a matter of getting my old key assembly to work in the new FOB shell. I'm doubtful if it's going to work perfectly no matter what I do, but at this point the old shell is history.
When I first started to research the 3 different ways to make this work ( supposedly) it always seemed everything worked great for people doing the videos (but probably not behind the scenes). I'm sure in some cases everything worked out fine, like it seems to have for you, but then I assume there's countless others like me that have run into the same issues I have. I also assume the people that manufacture these don't expect people to swap out the parts (unless you just get a new shell alone) but I also assume this doesn't always work as planned due to slight differences between the old shells and new ones.
I wish someone that has run into the problems I have, and have had to do modifications would do a video, but maybe people don't like to make videos of something that failed instead of working as planned. In my opinion those are the videos that should be done. You have done this in part by explaining things others don't when trying to do this, but in the end in worked out as planned for you.

Very helpful and easy to follow video. My key (2012 Kia Ceed MK2 UK) has a transponder chip held in my a small piece of white plastic. Very straightforward to swap over as it just slots in and then you put the white plastic clip over it.
It’s very important you do not lose, damage or forget to move over the transponder chip. If you do your car will not start.

Excellent video though I agree with another comment below that certainly in the UK the key also has an immobilizer chip that is separate to the PCB and this needs swapping over from the old case to the new. Had to call out the recovery guys who had seen this a million times and knew exactly what the issue was. Good work though

Great video, but I managed to buy the rubber button pad replacement for my old style fob and am glad I watched your video to realise I wouldn't be able to put it back together if I opened it up. Instead, I was able to pry the old pad out and the new one popped right in! No need to buy a new fob or open up the old one. Works great and cost less than £3.

The bag idea is indeed a good one. However, if wear on the rubber button pad is the only problem your key has, there is a much easier solution. Here's what you do:
My wife's key had the rubber pad just as badly worn as the one at the start of this video. I bought a spare shell for about $10, thinking I would replace the shell entirely. However, I found that the rubber pad was not glued in to the spare, and could be very easily got out with a toothpick. Then I removed the residue of the broken one, again with a toothpick. I cleaned off the slight amount of glue residue on surfaces inside the shell that the pad sticks to with isopropyl alcohol, then wiped with a cloth. Then I fitted the new rubber pad, using a tiny, tiny amount of Loctite gasket sealer, applied with the tip of a toothpick, as the adhesive. I think there are many other glues that would work just as well. It's as good as new now. If this is the only problem with the old key, it's a much better solution to do this rather than replace the whole shell.
I wouldn't have had the confidence to do this though if I hadn't studied this and some other videos first.

THANK YOU! This worked for me! I could not get the original key fob open as in this video (neither could my very strong son!), but found how easy it was to just use the rubber pad instead - I scraped out the rest of the broken pad very carefully and now just need to use a tiny amount of glue to keep the new pad in the old fob. I have another Kia fob that I will do the same to. THIS!! :)

I second this. If the rubber button pad is the only issue, I found that replacing the old pad with a new one was very simple. Digging out the old, falling-apart one was pretty easy (I used one of those dental-style metal picks you can buy at hardware stores and gently pried up the edges and it came out easily), then I cleaned out any residue with a few shots of compressed air. The new rubber button pad also came out easily from the new shell key fob shell I’d bought from Amazon, and it fit perfectly in the old fob, with a few drops of superglue to hold it in place.

It worked great! Pro-tip- Use the old plastic part under the rubber pad (the one that has a "frame" around the three buttons on the inside) , instead of the one from the new fob-this way you know it will align with the holes in the original fob. Pry it up gently so it won't break ( I used a very small flat head screwdriver, both to pry off the old rotten rubber button pieces and to pry up the rubber replacement from the new fob shell) , scrape off all of the old rotten rubber residue on the plastic frame, including around the edges and fit the new rubber button piece around it. Press firmly on the frame and rubber piece until it clicks firmly into place. There are two places where two sets of little pegs on the frame fit into the body of the fob, so make sure both sets click in. If the edges of the rubber button piece are still sticking up, use a the screwdriver or the bent end of a paperclip to tuck it in until it is flush. I did not have any glue handy to add before I assembled the button piece, but it was so firmly in place when I was finished, I don't think it will ever come out. If it does, I'll add glue. This is SO much easier than worrying about transferring the guts of the old fob and a transponder chip if the only issue is the rubber button piece. I did both fobs easily and I am thrilled with the results!

I used this tutorial just last night to switch out fobs for my daughter's car. The only difference is that I had to also remove the new key by punching out the roll pin - on hers, the key had actually broken out of the flip portion. I also had to do some light filing on the key so that it would fit - there was a slight difference in fit there. I got it done though and the key and fob look brand new. Nice vid!
