BMW 3 Series vs BMW 4 Series - Which Should You Buy?

- www.Cars.co.za - BMW make a fantastic coupe called the 4 Series. We drove the range-topping 435i las year (see our channel for that vid) and we were hugely impressed. But there was always the rumour that BMW would give the 4 Series the same treatment as the 6 Series, and launch a 4-door version, dubbed the Gran Coupe.
And there was always the possibility that this would end up being a terrible idea. But it wasn't, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is very good in almost every way.
However, BMW already has a very successful sedan - the 3 Series. It has been the sector-defining car for as long as anyone can remember, and the latest generation is a solid example of what BMW can offer.
And so you, the buyer, are now faced with a difficult decision: should you plump up and spend the extra cash on a 4-door 4 Series, or is the 3 Series more than enough?
We’ve tried to answer that question in our latest video, lining up the 328i against the 428i Gran Coupe.

You'd think he'd talk about the back seat headroom/legroom since the primary difference is the roof line. Seems to be a waste of a review.
The most important difference is frameless doors. How could you omit that?

Cars do look similar on the video and in the photos, but when you see 4 series and 3 series in person you realise why there is price difference. 4 is much more of Sport car, as it is wider then 3 it looks more agressive, and much more beautiful. Plus the gills on the side give it more sport look, so for me 4 is much more beautiful. 3GT also have gills, but I do not like it as it is not a car, and not a SUV, but something in beetween.

I have both cars. This video does not mention the options in both cars, such as 4 series have navigation, (eco, comfort,sport and sport plus), the bag do open by laser, plus the light inside of the car if there any body inside. There is a lot of feature with the car key.
So may be you can say it like iPhone 5and iPhone 6s

The difference is in the access. My grandmother will find it a huge challenge to enter the 4 series.

Excellent review guys - please do the BMW 1 vs 2 series? and the Audi A3 vs A4 sedan if possible? I can give you more if you need... But this is good because logic says a gran coupe and a normal 3 series is one thing!

Every diference you mention is in fact a option :) like standard idrive knob , touch idrive , ceramic touch idrive , proferional navigation , business navigation , sport gear box , normal gear box, harman kardon , hi-fi , etc.... They are all options :))
Compare two cars with exact same options .... ;)
+dansobolanu 4 series has more options as standard compared to the 3. My 430d GC M Sport has pro media, sports auto gearbox and memory seats as standard.
If you add the optionals you have standard on the 4 series you get to a slightly smaller price, within 1000€. The 4 series is a bit heavier, and the tailgate probably is a bit harder to build. I don't know where the added weight come from since it is only 15mm wider but instead less tall.

Great review ！I am glad I decided on the 3 series rather than the 4. I also ended up buying the Diesel model, 320d M Sport, which has great low torque and unbelievable mileage.

Well in fact you have to choose between 3 Series Sedan, 3 Series Touring, 3 Series GT and 4 series GC; that are all basically the same car.
video watcher and bmw owner always got different feeling mate. i am the 435 GC owner and i drive 335 before its totally different feeling vehicle both external and driving experience.

Is there more space in the cabin of the 4 series? It's a wider and longer car. The 3 was a little cramped for me.
C. Soul The 4 Series has less rear headroom but marginally. It is slightly wider at the elbows and hips, but feels significantly closer to the tarmac than the 3.

This is great but I wish I didn't have to struggle with the irritating and unnecessary audio noise to try to hear what the presenter is saying. Do we really have to have "music" with everything? Can we not get some information without being "entertained" in the process?

It’s simple, if you have the money, you buy a 4serie.
This is just my opinion but the 3 series looks like an upper middle class house wife's car but the 4 series looks like a rich kids first car
3 series also has now hatchback in the form of 3 series Gran Turismo (which is almost identical to 4 series Gran Coupe in body shape). And it's really tough choice

Ok it's simple as I have the grand coupe 4 series. Exterior the 4 is lower and more agresisive looking with side brake vents, slightly wider and longer body than the 3, otherwise it's a completely optional interior for both cars that makes them look identical. So not sure why they made a 4 series as they could've called the existing 3 series, the new 3plus model

what most ppl missed from this, is when he said you can buy any bmw. and customize everything, to your liking. so the number don't matter. ppl pull up to my de badged 320i xdrive all the time with they 4,5, 6's and 7 with the halo lights, and get dusted. i put it all in the engine.
decent review, but to make the viewer undecided with the specs you gave is slightly misleading... You should have also mentioned all the standard features the 4 series gives you over the 3 series. such as standard xenon lights, moon roof.

For some odd reason I still prefer my 6inline e90...That new 3/4-series just don't look as good...And I really think those new 4 cylinder turbos turned the car way too much towards Audis...and I really don't like Audis...
My 2015 428l is leaking oil at 29k miles. Lover pan gasket is leaking oil and oil filter housing gasket is leaking oil too. My warranty expired a month ago, and I got bill at BMW's dealership $2200
This is common issue with 328 and 428 oil gaskets failing after some time. Buy extended warranty or stay away from this car.

I think the 4 is better my current goal is to get a 435i grand coupe with xdrive and some of the nicer options im guessing that it would come to 50- 55k.

I'd have a base model 4 Series over almost any 3 Series. The 4 has much more presence and I prefer the hatchback design,
