  • Organist Wim Stroman visits one of the oldest organs of the Netherlands at Oosthuizen, a little town just 20 km north of Amsterdam. Herman van Leuven (from the foundation "Grote kerk Oosthuizen") tells about the history of both the church and the organ. When the organ was build and who the manufacturer was is still uncertain. Because of the limited compass of the manual in combination with the meantone tuning the playable repertoire on this instrument is limited as well. But it's charm and beauty gives always much pleasure and inspiration to play it!

    This organ, was restored in the Flentrop Orgelbauw factory, by me, Manuel da Costa. It was my favourite when I was studying restoration in the second half of the 1960s.

      That's what I've realized from listening to these very old organs. Bigger and louder does NOT mean better, especially for a church. If only we could once again capture the gentle sweetness and warm tone these ancients give, people might fall in love with the organ as an instrument all over again!

    Very interesting Wim! It shows just how much organs have developed over the years, from something very mechanical like this to the more modern electrified instruments. Still sounds great, even though it is nearly 500 years old!

    LOL, 'the *FORBIDDEN CHORDS'* 😁 'well-tmpered' was not a thing in those days. For such a tiny keyboard range, it actually does have a good selection of stops. Would be even nicer with a small pedal board.😉

    Very interesting demonstration of a lovely instrument.
    So, no pedalboard or pedal stops. Only a manual 16'?
    The seperate 2 2/3' Quint seems redundant (?) with a Sesquialtera of 2 2/3' + 1 3/5'. But maybe it filled-out the Mixture harmonics.

      +Rachid Mafhoum I can't be your friend, we live so far away. However, I can be your Christian advisor. :-) What you first must do, is believe in Jesus Christ as your savior, and pray and ask Him for forgiveness of your sins. After that, you then must accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. As you progress in your time of being a Christian, read His holy scripture, show His kindness and love to all the people that you encounter, and go around preaching the gospel of our Lord! If you have access to the Internet, you can read the Holy Bible through it, if you can't have a physical bible. Another step of salvation, which comes after accepting his gift, is baptism. Be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I will be praying for you. Peace be with you, brother of Christ.

    Why is it forbidden on this one ?

    • @Fierywolfthing
      @Fierywolfthing Před 7 lety +6

      Because the pipes were made and tuned to Just Intonation, meaning some intervals are wider on certain keys than others; in other words, A minor on this organ sounds man times more harmonious than your modern pipe organ, but B major sounds more dissonant than modern organs. Pretty much all modern instruments are tuned to Equal Temperament. Different tuning system, so some keys sound better, and some sound worse.

  • @rickyanthony
    @rickyanthony Před 3 lety

    Why does it sound out of tune? Is it a different temperament?
